Finally a little ray of sunshine after a 2 hour bus journey from Rio to the coast line, a town called Angra, where we waited all day on the port for a ferry to the Island of Ilha Grande. High mountains, Atlantic rain forest, breath taking beaches with only 3 areas of settlement on the entire island it didn´t take long to realise everyone knows everyone in this place and so long the sun stayed shining we were going to love our time here. After celebrating Chelsea´s 27th birthday like a local, which saw 2 bottles of Brazils most potent spirit, Cassacha, polished off in just a few hours with some fellow Irish and English travellers, the night ended with some people struggling to find their way back to the hostel and others performing their own ... read more

illa grande is an island off rio, we thought we would trial out the tent, hmmme after much deliberation of which camp site to go to we chose the busiest and a nice man helped us put our tent up (because again we are retards and started putting all the rods in the wrong place would have been there all day otherwise) ok camping may have not been the best idea seen as it was boiling hot and we camped in an ants nest. spent a few days here eating alot and lazing about. went on a boat trip to this gorgeous beach and also did some trecking accross the island, the views were amazing.... read more

Illah Grande is an island off the coast or Rio. We caught a ferry over and enjoyed the views on the way.. this is where we were going to camp!! -- although i was not looking forward to it i promised Kate i would try my best!! The first morning i woke up extremely cross but it got easier over a few days......still put my foot down and said i wouldnt sleep in it again! It is a really beautiful island with many beaches, little stalls and fish restaurants. Usually it would be quiet here but we arrived on brazillian bank holiday weekend so it was packed! We got a little boat to a beach and had lunch on a floating restaurant! The beach was huge with white sand and huge waves..its known as the nicest ... read more

http://www.ilhagrande.com.ar/ Day 1: So... 3 hours on a fairly nice air conditioned coach, and we arrived at Angra de Reis, for our ferry trip to the beautiful, lush island of Isla Grande. No roads, only about 2 cars, very much like Ko Lanta and Ko Phi Phi in Thailand - Tranquilo!!. It was a brazillian bank holiday so quite busy with chilled out Brazillian families enjoying the fine weather, and amazing location. We decided to get stuck in with our first meal on the island... cheapo chicken, mash, rice, beans and salad, all for about GBP2.50 each!!! Day 2: Got up and did a spur of the moment trek, about 5 miles, up and down, round and round, soaked to the bone with sweat in the steamy rainforest! Only now do we both realise how unfit ... read more

We woke up at 5.30 to get the bus from Buzios to Rio. With 5mins to spare we made the next bus to Angra Do Reis where we then got a ferry to Ilha Grande. I was ready to go to Argentina but Maz werent ready to give up Brazil just yet and as he heard so many good things about Ilha Grande we made the trek there. We stayed in AquaRio hostel which is apparently the nicest and most ´happening´. It is clean and the staff are helpful and speak English. They hold barbacues and arrange daily trips too so it was a good chance for us to start meeting more people. We met a mixture of interesting people. But apart from that we both don´t really rate Ilha Grande as much as what we ... read more

Ilha Grande So we left Rio for the short jouney to Ilha Grande 2 hours away by bus and then a 1 and a half hour ferry. Well what can we say about Ilha Grande - pure paradise! Our hostel (Aquario) was located right on the beach and each day a boat came to take us on various tours. On our first full day we went on a tour of Blue lagoon and 3 beaches. The snorkelling was excellent with many different coloured fish and the water crystal clear. Fresh fruit and coconuts were given out, bar service was to our beach, and generally life was good! The vibe in the village centre was very relaxed. We ate in a small Brazilan restaurant and tried a few of the local dishes. There were no cars on ... read more

Ilha Grande (pronounced eee-la graaanjee), literally the ´big island´is indeed a big island, off the coast of brazil about halfway between Rio and Sao Paulo. The island is covered in Atlantic Rainforest, mountains, and few howler monkeys (which can scare the hell out of you when youre hiking alone through the jungle and youve never heard a howler monkey before). The entire island is accesible by trial (and only trail), leading to freezing cold natural springs and secluded beaches, one of which still has the remains of a prison..the island has been at times a leper colony and a prison island (its where they sent the, ahem, political prisoners). Man, if that´s how they treat the criminals and the lepers you know life is good in Brazil. The hostel was about the best thing I´ve ever ... read more

So last time i left you we were shopping it up in the dizzy heights of Curitiba... We survived a rather posh night bus to Rio and then another bus ride down the coast before a 90 minute boat ride took us to Illa Grande. On a side note to anybody planning a night bus to anywhere...its ALL about the medicinal products. Any of the -azapam (valium) family will do and I´ve used a fair few varieties on this trip. (of note you can buy almost anything over the counter in Bolivia - much cheaper than at home, including antibiotics and antimalarials) This was well worth the trip. Its on all the must see lists for Brazil. A small island off the coast South of Rio with jungle inland and tropical beaches surrounding it. The town ... read more
