MONDAY MORNING AND OUR REAL WORK BEGAN. WE STARTED OFF WITH A SHORT TIME OF PRAYER PREPAREDBY TWO MEMBERS OF THE GROUP. THEN WE HAD BREAKFAST AND LEFT TO OUR RESPECTIVE DAY CENTRES. I WAS AT THE DAY CENTRE OF THE SISTERS TOGETHER WITH MATTHEW AND FRANCESCA AND WE HEADED OFF ON FOOT. AS WE ARRIVED, WE SAW A MASSIVE GROUP OF CHILDREN OF ABOUT 80 IN TOTAL. EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE SO ORGANISED THAT AT FIRST WE WERE CONFUSED AT WHAT TO DO WITH T6HE CHILDRN. EVENTUALLY WE STARTED PLAYING WITH THE KIDS AS WHEN THEY SAW US, THAY ALL CAME RUNNING UP TO US AND CALLING US ´CIA´AND ASKING US QUESTIONS AND, SEEING THEY INCLUDED US SO MUCH, WE JOINED THEM. THE GIRLS TOK ME IN AN AREA, AT A CERTAIN POINT, WHERE THEY ... read more

That is how LP describes this cool city, capital of Parana state. Heard so much about the transport system here being a sucess story and model to other cities, my first impression of the city was not good as I arrived on a rainy night. Arriving in Porto Alegre I only have 30 minutes to meet up with by good friend Pedro from my travels in Central America, my socialist friend looks so different, so clean and relaxed, that's not the Pedro I know! Of that little time we had we catch up on things his studies and my travels, we agreed to meet up in Asia! Farewell again and off my bus to Curitiba. raining most of the 12 hour journey, like i said arrived in the city raining i went to the internet place ... read more

With one day left to spare on my Visa, the 17 year old Sao Paulo Immigration Officer didn't even blink at the date. He was probably thinking more about the party he had to leave to come to work. It's summer in Brazil and hot. We were picked up from the airport by one of Andrew's friends and taken to lunch and a little tour of Sao Paulo before hopping on a bus to Curitiba. Greeted by Lu at the bus station we shortly arrive at her parents' place in Curitiba. Can't tell you how nice it was to eat our first home-cooked meal in almost three months. We cruise around Curitiba for the next couple days eating three home cooked meals a day, like I said it was nice. It doesn't hurt that Lu's mom ... read more

BRASIL (BRA) - PARANÁ (PR) - CURITIBA EM 2 DIAS Resumo: VALE A PENA CONHECER, AMEI!!! Paguei R$40,00 a diária no Euro Hotel, fica bem no Centro.

Mission for today: leave Paraty and go via Sao Paulo to Curitiba. Of course that morning was the first sunny and lovely morning in Paraty but we had to leave at 9:40. We had basic breakfast (for Brazilian standards: Coffee, Sandwich and mango juice) in a bar near the bus station were apparently only locals have their breakfast. After that we took the first and last pictures of the now empty cobblestone center, paid the land-lady in the incredibly cheap (and very basic) Pousada Mira Mar (50 R$ i.e. less than 20€ for a double room per night) and walked the 10 minutes to the bus station again. There we met some surfers who were surprised to find themselves stuck in Paraty as all buses to Sao Paulo were sold out two days in advance. Easy ... read more

I´m like a bear that´s been fattening itself before leaner times - that is I´m heading away from under the wing of Maria´s mum Joanita and her lovely cooking and the restaraunts of Curitiba - yesterdays meal in Madalosso Vehlo in Santa Felcidade was just amazing - you sit down and until you say no to the waiters they keep coming around with plates of food and roasts on skewers - it´s the type of place best visited after lent or a hunger strike - the type of place that would go out of buisness if there were a few Gar´s about. Yesterday we travelled around the twon again on the tour bus as I did it in a rush the last time, viewing the city from the comminications tower and popping into a few parks ... read more

Civilisation - Whahey - no mosquitoes! Even better!! Arrived here last thursday to be met by Maria in the Mercado Municipal. While waiting for her to turn up I had a go at getting a haircut via the medium of sign language - it´s probably fortunate that I wear what little hair I have very short as trying to get anything else done may have been more than my hands could translate. It´s brilliant catching up with Maria who I met travelling in New Zealand - she has married Caio since. I am staying with Marias mum, Joanita and her brother Rickki, who live right beside the Jardim Boatanical. Since I´ve arrived it's been a whirlwind of the coolest bars and restaraunts and meeting all of Maria´s family. I´ve been out and about on my own ... read more

Waking up to a massive headache I realise that not only did the wine taste bad - it was bad!! We set out today having not arranged a bus to the airport, confirmed flight or reservation at the hostel. However we manage to catch the bus and pay on-board (Auto Viacao Sao Jose dos Pinhais - R$8, leaves every 20 minutes from the 24 hours street) and soon we are at Curitiba's ultra modern airport. Check-in with Gol airlines (R$208.62) is a breeze and an hour later (taking the bus would be a 10 hour journey) we are at Foz do Iguacu.... read more
