TT- This will be our final blog from our adventure. Soon we will be home. The photos we have taken here are mostly of our old friends who we have not seen for years. KF- Florianopolis is a beautiful island just off the coast of Southern Brazil. Lush green mountains are surrounded by over 20 beaches of white-gold sand. It's where people from Rio de Janeiro go for summer vacation. Tarjei had a six month sabbatical at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina here in 1989 when our kids were little. We still have good friends living and working here. They have been so welcoming -- true Brazilian warmth and hospitality. We stayed a week and had time to visit friends, wander on sandy beaches, swim in the warm South Atlantic, listen to music, eat churrasco ... read more

Brazil scored immediate brownie points with its colloquial greeting of Oi - which I have enjoyed saying to all and sundry. We choose to visit Curitiba simply because it was a half way point between Iguazu and Rio. While a beautiful town I got the feeling that it is not really visited by many tourists. We were certainly somewhat of a novely - the bakers gave us a free diary, the bus station attendent gave us oranges and we definatley got bigger portions in the restaurants. This could of course be the friendly nature of Brazilians but no one else seemed to be getting this treatment. As well as a great place for freebies Curitiba is the start of what is described as Brazil´s most beautiful train journey - however our plans to take the train ... read more

Curitiba (pronounced Curichiba)... this wont be a long one. We arrived after a long overnight bus but it was much better than the first - I slept pretty much the whole way, waking up now and again to crack my neck back into place ;) We had a little wander through town and Mark gave us the history, it´s a tourist destination because of the fantastic urban planning, it´s quite clean and well cared for. Curitibians all think it is the most wonderful place on earth - although one did admit to me that they do lack a beach.... Haha! We spent the afternoon wandering around the shops and bought some nail polish which feels like a real luxury now. We had a little rest and then got into party mode as it was Saturday night ... read more

Tirsdag d. 5. okt. Stedet koerte ... read more

Like many travelers, I came to Curitiba for the Serra Verde Express train ride over the Serro do Mar mountains. However, as it was raining, and busloads of tour groups were heading for the train. I decided to explore the city, wait until the weekend crowds had left, and hope for better weather (no such luck). In 1885, a railroad was built to get Curitiba's products from the high plains to the shore for ocean transport. Goods are still transported on trains a hundred cars long, but most days, a tourist train also slowly chugs up over the mountains, crossing bridges and passing through tunnels blasted through the granite. Clearly, the route had once been more important, for all along the way, there were once-beautiful stations, now in ruins, except for the sweet one in Marumbi. ... read more

The capital of the state of Paraná, Curitiba is the biggest city in the South of Brazil, it has about 2 million inhabitants. It is a modern city, known for its quality of life. It has many parks and open spaces and its innovative public transport solutions are copied all over the world. We very much enjoyed visiting it, it was quite a contrast with Florianopolis where everything is thought to favour the real estate developers rather than the inhabitants. We took the tourism Line bus and were able to visit many places of interest. Among them are the Largo da Ordem where we had the surprise to watch a play in open air. By accident we arrived in Curitiba in the week it hosts a yearly Theater Festival. Watching Oedipus King with a creative staging ... read more

The tally so far... hostels with hot showers: 0/3 plane rides: 3 long haul bus trips: 1 injuries: 1 So on our last day in Rio we donned our evil backpacks and headed down to the bus stop in the 36 degree heat. We were heading to the bus station a few hours early since only Brazilian citizens can book bus tickets online. According to our Lonely Planet, a bus ticket would cost about 32USD, but once we got to the station we found that only 2 bus companies went to Curitiba and they both charged the same price of R$104 (AUD64).. another hit to the budget. But the bus turned out to be really nice. We got free food and water, pillow and blanket and the seats almost lay all the way flat. Somehow we ... read more

Well, after our mammoth bus ride from 5 degree celcius Calafate to 35 degree Iguazu, we spent a day checking out the Argentinian half of the Iguazu falls. Its difficult to find words to describe the falls, and the surrounding area in general. There are multiple falls (like 100´s), and the whole place is incredibly powerful, and just bloody amazing really. We jumped in a jet boat that took us up the Iguazu river and under some of the falls, which was an incredible experience. We got completely soaked. By the end of the day we were exhausted from walking around in the heat, but it was worth it. The following day (Saturday the 6th I think) we jumped on a bus and did the Brazil side (via immigration etc which was no big deal really). ... read more

Back to Brazil and the sustainable Curitiba For our last day in Puerto Iguazu, we decide to take the local yellow bus El Practico to Iguazu Falls National Park. Having such a close and personal look at the falls on Wednesday we decide to forgo the steep price to take a second look and just have a relaxing walk. There are a myriad of colorful butterflies here at the park. So many so that they are pesky and seem to love the taste of tourist sweat. The garbage is a popular spot for a large S American striped mammal and the park also has a few playful monkeys. We get off the bus later in the afternoon at an empanada stand and then hike back to our cabin. So far no rain but it is incredibly ... read more

My Eternal Love Garu It's back to work week for our host, so Keith and I are given a key and make our way around the city on our own. Angelica has told us about a government run restaurant that serves a healthy lunch Monday through Friday for just one riel (about 55 cents US). The restaurant is located near the center square and has long lines. I'm anxious to check this place out as it sounds similar to One World. We manage to find the line, which has about a hundred people when we arrive. The people appear to be from all walks of life, just like One World. The restaurant is called Restaurante Popular and was started in Aug 2007. Sergio had told us that Curitiba is a city used by the government to ... read more
