The city of Anapu lies rougly 140km east of the river Xingú along the Transamazonic Highway. The city is literally spread out along the road, the commerce and hotels scattered over a paved section of the infamous dirt highway that stretches across the Amazon. There are roughly 20,000 people living here; almost everyone is from somewhere else. Thirty years ago, the city was no more then a small villa - the highway in it's infancy. To understand the region of Transamazonia it's necessary to step back some 40 years. In the 1970's, the military government began a project to colonize and utilize the Amazon. The first step was the construction of the road, a giant highway the fluctuates between suffocating dust in the summer to impassable mud in the winter (and has changed little today). In Belém, I've booked a hotel straight out the Lonely Planet guidebook. It's justly full of tourists from every corner of the world that all speak English. The hotel staff is like the Adam's family, but if they were really indescrivable monsters and not family friendly comedians with a laugh track: the old woman, a stout ball of anger the shape of a stool; her grey haired giant son lurks clad only in a purple towel, amphibiatically darting in and out of the shower. As one of the few bilingual, I get the chance to be a bridge between the worlds. But rather then the warming love of the olive branch, I just feel dirty. It is through a businessman I hear of a city called Porto do Moz - and as I do not ... read more

A quick update of the following months from which I seemingly vanished: I leave Pernambuco and head North into Paraíba, traveling through small dusty towns of the deep interior and into the state of Ceará. Greeted as a curiousity, as always I recieve loads of stories about whatever person from another country once passed through. I never once meet another foreigner or tourist. I make a beeline to Fortaleza and pass a week scoping out the city before recieving my parents. We pass a week along the coast, experiencing the coastal strip of tall dunes and one church towns and a bout of violent food poisioning and two flat tires. My parents depart, I remain in Brazil, without itinerary. I wander to São Luis, then depart without looking back to a quieter place across the bay, ... read more

Once again i have defied the odds and managed to navagate from my last blog destination in Forteleza to Belem... running low on funds as everything was shut during carnival i jumped on a bus to belem a 24hour bus ride from fortaleza hoping when i got there the banks would still be open. Yes the race against time was on once again... firstly the likelyhood of a brazilian bus being on time was extremely unlikely and it was set to arrive at 1pm (banks in brazil genrally close around 3pm). secondly... banks are also closed on saturday and sunday today was friday. so the bus pulled in to the rodoviario at 1:15pm amazing there just might be a possibility of getting to the bank whilst it was still open. i finally figured out my map ... read more

Fernando and I recently went for a three day trip with our neighbors Mary and Ricardo to Santarem, Para state, Brasil. It is an hour flight from Manaus by airplane. We spent most of our days relaxing in the sun, nibbling on garlic olive oil shrimp and other seafood treats. We sipped bottled coke and beer and lounged in the Amazon river. We rented a room in a little pousada right on the beach, with a deck looking over white sand and palm trees. Alter do Chão beach is beautiful and I had many moments where I stepped back from myself and thought, Oh my God, I'm swimming in the Amazon river! While soaking in the river one day this guy with a boat came up to us and offered a tour around the out lying ... read more

So we left Rio and headed inland briefly to Ouro Preto, an old mining town set in the hills. Its a pretty place, surrounded by lots of greenery, with cobbled streets and lots of coloured colonial style buildings. We found some very friendly locals who went out of their way to meet our weird gringo requests... at the local restaurant myself and a couple of others asked for wine, but they didnt have any... however the owner nipped out to a local shop and bought some especially for us! It did take a while to actually get a glass, since it was white wine and wasnt chilled so they put it in a bucket of ice for a while... then they had to work out how to open it, which was obviously something they dont do ... read more

Ok all I am not dead oer missing I am just in Brazil where nothing seems to work very well and nobody really cares. So far I am not over all impressed with this country so I will move on to Argentina soon. I will start with the best story of the trip first Things to concider when you go Piranha fishing 1 don´t go with a spaz 2 don´t park your boat directly under a tree 3 piranhas on average are 3to 4 inches long and weigh a couple of ounces 4 they bite like hell The first guy in our boat to get a bite got so excited and thought he was in for a huge struggle to get this tiny many toothed beast into the boat. he pulled the fishing rod out of ... read more

I spent this WE on Ilha de Marajo, where the buffalos are wild and stroll around the streets. It is a very primitive island with few cars but many bikes. On the somewhat scary trip to the island (there were big waves, not a very stable boat, people were screaming, bags were flying everywhere and I think that the life wests were hanging there more for decoration than for other purposes :o) I met a bunch of crazy Frenchies that I ended up sharing room with. I had my first warm shower (or should I say boiling since it was either icecold or boiling, hihi) since I came to Brazil. Very nice. We had some nice buffalo meet and then explored the only disco in town. After having tried three times, the bouncer lady finally decided ... read more
