While I was in Belem and we were getting ready to leave on the boat I was thinking that I might like to work on the docks here. It looks like good hard work and its a pleasant place. I would get to go up and down the river on a boat and see different places. Housing and food is covered by working on a boat. I would get stronger, more agile, and probably gain some serious climbing and knot tying skills. I would have plenty of time for martial arts and such and leisure. My portuguese would improve and I would get to spend time in some of the best cities we have visited thus far. I could really enjoy that. The reality is that I would become restless though. Too much of a good ... read more

So today we went to a butterfly and bird garden and to an old fort. Pretty sweet action. We also cooked for about 20 people; black bean burgers and Macoroni and Cheese again, because it was easy and cheap. Belem is a beautiful city and in the future I would like to maybe come back here and spend some more time. We were checking boat prices and found out that the only two boats to Santarem this week are tomorrow and friday. And seeing as how Josh has to be back in Sao Luis by the 15th we are heading out tomorrow. The ticket prices for the boats we hear are usually $R90 but because we are in the middle of July, a vacation month, the current price is $R160 per person! So we paid $R ... read more

The title means, "voyage without assault" Well, whether or not the shifty eyed creepy people had anything to do with it, listening to this bad feeling was absolutely the right decision. On the bus today we spoke to a woman who has been robbed 4 times on the buses between Maraba and Belem. She said that out of every 5 buses traveling the roads at night only 1 will make it safely and that these robberies happen every night. We were having this conversation as the sun was setting on our 9.5 hour journey and we still had 2 more hours until Belem. This was quite the funtastic event. All the lights were out in the bus except for the headlights so as not to attract attention and being that we were in the middle of ... read more

Alright well, about the title. I did not feel comfortable with the way things had been going and we talked it over and decided to switch our bus tickets for tomorrow morning at 10am and we switched hotels. It is probably just paranoia, but considering our location it is better to be safe and not take the risk. Besides, I just had a bad feeling about things and I have a tendency, especially when traveling, to listen to these sorts of things when I feel them. The internet is still not good, but this hotel is much much much better. It is right next door (literally, they share a wall), but much safer I feel. I will get into more detail on these things later and if I get a chance I will post some pictures ... read more

So the title is a phrase we have started using alot between me kathryn and our homie Josh. He started it really. Kath as he calls her was going to pet his giant dog Rocky Rambo and he just blurted it out. We bought some tickets at the train station to Maraba because we were told it is cheaper to get to Belem. And since they couldn't provide a map nor information and since it is difficult to get to the train station to buy tickets, we made an adventurous decision. We bought tickets and talked our friend Josh into coming with (Foda-se!, Foda-se!). Upon arriving at home and reading our travel guide to find out more about this city Maraba that was recommended to us by the train station we found out a really funny ... read more

Tim Version: * Travelled to Alter Do Chau in it's flooded state and kayaked iit's flooded forests. * Went to Maguery staying with a local family and got to hike through the jungle. The version now under water coz the river levels are so high this year: Arriving in Santarem while it isn't a dead heap of a place, it also isn't one I wanted to spend any time in. Unfortunately arriving 12 hours late meant we had missed the bus to Alter Do Chao so I had to stay the night. Myself and some others found our way to a cheap hotel, checked in, and cleaned up - most of us had done the same thing not showering during the boat trip! While Im sure there were some places to head out to for some ... read more

Tim Version: * Got on the boat early but not early enough! Nearly all spots were gone, found aircon is not a special area but rather where 80% of people are, and got me a spot next to the girls toilets and engine noise, doh! * Got to see incredible jungle, the river itself of which some portions are so wide that you feel more like you are at sea, to practise a lot of Portuguese, and finally to experience boredom and close quarters living previously unmatched in my life! The version thats chugging against the current down the Amazon river, slowly but with excitement: So "get there early!!" is the advice. Good advice!! I was 3 hours early and nearly all spots were gone! Being new to the world of hammocks and hammock tying I ... read more

Tim Version: * Stayed with an incredibly good couchsurfing host and got to meet a few other CSers around. * Bought my first hammock (my future bed for the boat ride), checked out Belem and enjoyed some seriously good Amazonia brand on tap beer and food! The version that still hasn't learn that when you're at a buffet you don't have to try and eat the whole damn thing: ... however, remember I AM backpacking on a budget! If you can swipe sauce and sugar packets, you do, and that kinda stuff, so when you pay for a buffet you kinda expect not to have to eat for the next two meals (and often you don't have any money to anyway!!) Anyway, Belem, argh of a bus ride! The roads between Fortaleza and Belem aren't the ... read more

After a night in a bed (at long last) in Manaus we headed for the docks early to find ourselves a boat to Santarem. We found one that was already quite packed but slung our hammocks on the upper decks and waited to set off. little did we know that about a million other hammocks were yet to be slung! It was a very cosy journey to say the least, but quite an experience . Fortunately just before we set sail we bought some fruit and cheese sandwiches to keep us going and had plenty of books. The sunsets on the Amazon are indescribable! After around 30 fairly uneventful hours on board we finally arrive in Santarem late evening and so decided to stay on the boat on the dock with some people we met to ... read more
