Background: Bolivia, named after independence fighter Simon BOLIVAR, broke away from Spanish rule in 1825; much of its subsequent history has consisted of a series of nearly 200 coups and counter-coups. Comparatively democratic civilian rule was established in 1982, but leaders have faced difficult problems of deep-seated poverty, social unrest, and illegal drug production. Current goals include attracting foreign investment, strengthening the educational system, resolving disputes with coca growers over Bolivia's counterdrug efforts, and waging an anticorruption campaign.

The surreality of La Paz is perhaps expressed no more distinctly than in the "Valley of the Moon", or "Valle de la Luna" as it is known here. Where in England, could you find a city, where moonscapes flank its edges? Quite normal here though, normal in this capital of Bolivia, a microcosm of the strangeness of its mother country. We visited the valley this morning, but I'm still not sure what to make of it. What can you make of it really? It just is. On the way back we saw the country's Presidente; Evo Morales, or so we thought. [View Full Entry]

Hi, It has been really long since I wrote an entry, so my kids decided it is my turn this time to tell the story of our adventures in Bolivia after returning from Rurenabaque (Pamapas and Amish). And if the kids say I should be doing somethin, I better do it... After returning to La Paz from Rurenabaque, Tal decided he has to make some strength and courage test - he went biking on the 'Death Road'. It is a gravel road that stretches over ~60 km with many curves. It is very narrow and on one side there is the [View Full Entry]

The next stop on our journey west through Bolivia, was Sajama National Park, home of the eponymous volcano, Bolivia’s highest peak. For some reason this beautiful area receives relatively few visitors and therefore has no public transport links. Or perhaps more likely, the lack of transport explains the lack of visitors. Either way, we’ll be surprised if this situation continues for much longer. To get there, we needed to board a La Paz bound bus from Santa Cruz and ask to be let off at the small town Patacamaya, from where we could charter a taxi for an hour or so [View Full Entry]

The chicken bus to Potosi only cost me £2.80. I felt somewhat over charged considering the the death trap on wheels which I was about to board would be lucky if it make it to the end of the street never mind Potosi. When I got on the bus, a lady was sat in the seat which I had booked. Now, under normal circumstances I would have let her sit there without a problem, but the amount of times I have been asked to vacate a seat whilst in South America because it has been booked then it felt quite good [View Full Entry]

Nov 1, 2009 I expected to wake up late since we didn’t go to sleep around 3:30AM, but when I looked at my watch, it was only 7:00AM. We only slept for 3.5 hours but we both slept well and were wide awake. We were still in awe and partially in denial that my pack got stolen the night before. Since my clothing didn’t take up too much space, I had all of our toiletries and other items we used daily, such as our toothbrush, toothpaste, face soap, lotion, sunscreen, make-up, bug spray, plug adapters, sleeping bag, fleece blanket, and Justin’s [View Full Entry]

Most people arriving for a tour of the Amazon would be well prepared in advance - drink plenty of fluids the night before, get a good nights sleep and brace yourself for the humidity, heat and general uncomfortable ness of Amazon life. Not us. Drink fluids we did the night before, just the wrong type, and lots of the wrong type. And so on the morning of our flight (the night after our hostel trivia quiz and celebratory shots at winning best team name) to Rurrenabaque a small town in the Beni region of North East Bolivia from where we would [View Full Entry]

Following our 3 day adventure around south west Bolivia hanging out in hot springs and amusing ourselves, with what we have all decided are the campest animals in the world, Llamas, we arrived in lofty La Paz, the second largest city in Bolivia. I had heard alot about La Paz, mainly so from the book i read last year called Marching Powder, which tells the story of a Brit who got locked up in a prison in La Paz for trying to smuggle a shed load of coke out of Bolivia to the UK, smart guy. But La Paz really is [View Full Entry]

Hi it is Nitzan and I am going to write a long blog. From La Paz we drived 20 hours in a bus to a small town called Rurenabaque. There we found a hostel that was full of Israelis but we had no choice. The next morning we found an agency to go to the Pampas. The Pampas is a kind of a savanna. The next morning we woke up early and got on the way with our group to the Pampas. We drived in a jeep for three hours and on the way we saw lots of hawks, eagles, and even one [View Full Entry]

TITIKAKA 31.10.2009 SEKÄ LA PAZ, BOLIVIA 1.-2.11.2009 ”Kävele hitaasti, syö kohtuullisesti ja nuku paljon sieluparkasi vuoksi”, kuuluu bolivialaisten neuvo vuoristotaudin karttamiseksi. Reppumatkailijat kertovat legendaa, että kaikki aina sairastuvat La Pazissa, Boliviassa. En uskonut ennen kuin ensimmäisenä yönä sairastuin oikein kunnolla. En tiedä mikä osa siitä on vuoristotautia, mikä vatsatautia. Mutta nukkunut olen ja nähnyt sitäkin vähemmän La Pazia: ensimmäisenä päivänä nukuin kahteen asti iltapäivällä ja viime yönä yksitoista tuntia, minkä jälkeen jouduin pudottau [View Full Entry]
