Background: Bolivia, named after independence fighter Simon BOLIVAR, broke away from Spanish rule in 1825; much of its subsequent history has consisted of a series of nearly 200 coups and counter-coups. Comparatively democratic civilian rule was established in 1982, but leaders have faced difficult problems of deep-seated poverty, social unrest, and illegal drug production. Current goals include attracting foreign investment, strengthening the educational system, resolving disputes with coca growers over Bolivia's counterdrug efforts, and waging an anticorruption campaign.

Hello Everyone, Well its probably a decent time of the day for you all but for us its 7 am here. Reason I'm up so early is that I' ve caught myself a stinker of a cold. We are currently in La Paz, Bolivia, alive and well and really enjoying this place. We had planned to head North West for Maddidi national Park/Amazon but because of all the craziness which is going on in Santa Cruz regarding a referendum which is to be held on a new constitution, it is not safe for us as tourists. So instead we are planning [View Full Entry]

Polly: Jungle boogey...da da da doo doo...jungle boogey. Finally I could sing this with conviction. I kept singing it in the pampas, thinking I was in the jungle. Heat, strange food, and primitive surroundings do crazy things to you. We got on a boat, along with our group and a few locals who were hitching a ride up the Beni River, then up the Tuichi River to the shore near our camp. As we travelled upstream of the Tuichi River it got a bit shallow and Ross and I had to jump in and push our primitive little vessel up the [View Full Entry]

La Paz - Bolivia To get to LaPaz (Bolivia’s main capital) was a journey we will never forget. Imagine this: The bus journey was 12 hours long overnight. We hop on the bus at 8pm and remember the Semi-Cama and comfort buses don’t exist in this country. So we embrace the bus and its features and remind ourselves that we will be off in 12 hours. As the bus begins on the gravel road 7 hrs into the journey we have only just stopped bumping out of our seats and our chairs sitting back up right every so often as they [View Full Entry]

Alt [View Full Entry]

Rurrenabaque high street
Rurrenabaque high street
Note the tarmac!
Ross: Rurrenabaque is a laid-back town in the Bolivian department of Beni, located on the banks of the Beni River, a tributary of the Amazon. It is located within the Amazon basin and as such is at a much lower altitude than La Paz. This is reflected in the heat, humidity and mosquito population. It's economy seems to be mostly supported by the likes of us using it as a gateway to visit the Amazon jungle (or selva) and the pampas (or savannah). Jimmy and Nic (from our week in Portillo) had strongly suggested we visit Rurrenabaque, and so here we [View Full Entry]

Our trusty trucks...
Roadblock numero uno
Waiting for a lift from the other side of the road block...

At 6am we headed for our first stop point...the geysers. Being a little sceptical we were expecting to see a couple of puffs of smoke coming out of the ground...we couldnt have been more wrong! They were amazing! Huge great continuous blasts of egg smelling smoke coming out of the ground. All of us were in awe! Then we headed to probably the best part of the trip..the hot spring! Although it was freezing we took no time at all in stripping down to our swimming gear and jumping in...it was like heaven! Sadly we dont have photos but we have [View Full Entry]
