Wow the bus station here in Tucuman is huge! Like a shopping center, well it actually is. 12 hours in the bus relieved to be off it, there were a group of guys who sat around me one is my seatmate, annoying as hell, played music loudly and the guy sat next to me keeps changing seats, one time bumping his head on the tv , he never came back to his seat and I slept pretty well through the night. Thre was a bad smell in the bus that pervade for awhile, either i got used to it or it disappeared, I took the semi cama to save 7 US dollars, the upgrade was grand! Next time.. Took a taxi to La Posta de Viajero hostal. Paint peeling from the rooms, but its nice overall, ... read more

I could not get a bus with a seat that reclines to the full 180 degrees that I have become acustomed to (God help me when I reach Bolivia) direct to Salta so I thought I would catch a luxury bus to Tucuman and then catch a bus the next day for 3 hours to Salta. I guess all of this is working out quite well as I am seeing a lot of other places that I would have driven straight past! I arrived in Tucuman following a pretty good nights sleep. At the age of 31 I have finally perfected the art of sleeping in strange places with noise and commotion in the background! Tucuman is a nice place actually. It is the 5th largest city in Argentina. You can definitely tell that you have ... read more

Heres my guide to San Miguel de Tucuman. Sorry if there are any spelling errors. I havnt been writing in english in a while. Heres some info about the areas of san miguel i know about. I have been living in san miguel for six months as an afs exchange student. I currently go to school and live with a host family in SM. If there are any exchange students traveling here feel free to ask questions. Firstly SM isnt really a tourist city. Tourists hoping to find a clean touristy city will be disappointed. SM is generally dirty and dont be suprised to be hasseled by poor people around the city centre and in bars and in restarants and generally anywhere if you decide to speak a foreign language. A simple "no perdon" will get ... read more

Tucuman is actually a big city but you would never think that when you are there. We planned to stay four nights in the city but the hostel would only take us for two, this was not because they were booked up it was because you don't need any longer here than that. The hostel (Tucuman Hostel) was very simple but still a ok place to stay in. All the rooms have very tall doorways and open out on to an outdoor area, they are very very basic so do not be expecting much. So after two days we were ready for our next stop. We had heard that you can rent a car from Tucuman to Salta for approx 700 pesos. However as we could not estimate the exact amount of time we wanted for ... read more

Well it seems a long time since we wrote and so long away...we have done so much since..and the internet connection is sooooooo slow over here so its quite a slog to update this...but here goes. I think it was 4 months ago we last wrote in Jachal !!. This town is on Ruta 40, a 4500 kilometre road stretching the length of West Argentina from The tip of patagonia and up to the Altiplano of the Border with Boliva. This road (sometimes track) would form the basis for the next part of our journey up to the Bolivian Border. We are still generally getting brilliant days of clear blue skys, although a little colder now and come night time its bitter so it isnt great for camping, especially as it goes dark at 7pm as ... read more

After leaving Easter Island several days ago we have been constantly on the move catching planes and buses and living as gypsies on the road. We landed at Santiago in Chile in the evening and headed straight out to catch the airport bus to the omnibus terminal. Here we hoped to transfer to the next overnight bus over the Andes to Mendoza and on... So we hopped onto the bus with precision timing and departed within minutes of boarding. We placed ourselves down the back where there was plenty of room for our packs and sat back to relax before our expected rush to find a connection to Argentina. It was not long before we looked at each other and then at the other passengers as the bus launched over speed bus looking for air time ... read more

Travelling is almost as much about the people you meet as it is about the places you go. Along the way, I've had the chance to meet loads of really lovely people - but most of them have been other backpackers from Western countries. It's been quite hard to meet and get to know people from the countries I've been travelling through....until now, that is. Easter is a big holiday period for Argentinians. Not only do they get the Thursday and Good Friday as holiday, but this year the Monday after was a holiday too, in memory of the 'desaparecidos' of the 1970s. I had chosen to spend Easter in a small town near Tucumán in the north-west of Argentina, called Tafí del Valle. My guidebook told me it was beautiful, and a good spot for ... read more

Ola, After a lively welcome dinner (muchos Pisco Sour, Vino Tinto & Cervaza) We finally got our bikes cleared Thursday afternoon and followed the truck with the container to a dusty yard where they were unloaded and we spent a couple of hours assembling them. We left there about 4pm for the 20 min trip back to Vina del Mar to collect the rest of our gear from the hotel. Unfornately due to unforseen teething problems (got lost & and a person who shall not be named ran out of petrol with no emergency condom for fuel transfer.....fortunately saved by another team member who refused to use his condom but had a plastic bag which did the trick) so it took us around an hour. After sorting our gear at the hotel we left around 6pm for ... read more

Got up early to pack. Went to find the atm to get the last of the money that I will need. Then I called mom. She told me she was on the first day of recovery from the flu. Back earllier I had to get rid of the gas so I dumped it into the shower. That was a mistake because gas I lighter than water and so the gas stayed at the bottem of the shower when the water drained . I soak it up with the paper town and soon the room fan disapated the fume. By the time I finish packing it was 12:30 and the hotel lady want to chagrge me for one half day more. I refused and so end it. At 2:20 pm I started my walk to the bus ... read more
