Background: Following independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and between civilian and military factions. After World War II, a long period of Peronist authoritarian rule and interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976. Democracy returned in 1983, and numerous elections since then have underscored Argentina's progress in democratic consolidation.

First day at work! Veronica came and picked us up from the house at 8, she gave the 3 of us a lift to the park which was about half an hours drive away. She warned us that we would have to get the bus each day which takes an hour, and can be very busy and extremely hot, unless our boss Reynaldo took a shine to us and offered us a lift. Turns out that he lives opposite our house, so if we end up getting the bus, then we know he must really hate us! Got to the [View Full Entry]

It´s bank holiday here today, so there wasn´t much open. Managed to get to a supermarket to buy our lunch for our first day at work tomorrow. Did the usual of gong to our favourite little cafe in the centre and had a coffee and beer in the evening. [View Full Entry]

Woke up at 12:30 feeling terrible, but had breakfast waiting on the table for us and some strong coffee (really starting to like this place!). Aida cooked us Beef for dinner which was lavish, and we had an early night. [View Full Entry]

Had our órientation´today where we met 2 other volunteers who are starting at the same time. Dan Haydon and Helen something, seemed really nice both on gap years before uni. We met Veronica and Carolina who are the i-to-i representatives, and spent a couple of hours getting to know them and finding out about Posadas and the work we´ll be doing, as well as a quick spanish lesson from Norma. We were warned about the slow pace of life, and to expect some days at work to be busier than others, and that we had to adapt and enjoy the [View Full Entry]

Arrived in Posadas after a pretty misserable journey, we were both eager to get to a police station and report the stolen bag. Sat at the station for half an hour waiting for Veronica, but in the end her Mum (Norma) showed up. Norma spoke English which helped, and took us to our home stay where we met the family and dropped our stuff off. We then went to a local police station to report all the details and managed to get a report for the insurance. The police station wasn´t exactly modern, and only had 1 computer and lot´s [View Full Entry]

Posadasissa l [View Full Entry]

On my way from Iguazu Falls to Paraguay, I stopped in Argentine border town of Posadas, across the river from Encarnacion, Paraguay, to go to the Paraguayan consul there and to catch a bus to the nearby Jesuit ruins in San Ignacio. I found in Posadas, however, a great city, off the beaten track, of about 300k inhabitants with a great university nightlife. There I met a group of foreigners who were there doing volunteer work at an underfunded wildlife shelter outside of town. They invited me to come see it, and it was clear that although it seemed to be [View Full Entry]

For Me?
For Me?
A gift from Miss Ramsey (it goes with the T-shirt).
Posadas was not on our original list of places to visit. Although we knew of the historical Jesuit missions in the area, we had chosen to sacrifice them, leaving more time for adventures further South. Time was beginning to run out on our South American tour and we still had lots we wanted to see. As it turned out and as luck should have it, the bus timetables threw the modern riverside city of Posadas a lifeline and we had to route through it to get to our chosen destination of Rosario, so we gave it a day to see what [View Full Entry]

Early Morning Market in Posadas
A Heart of Stone
