Anna´s Birthday today, so woke up at 6:30 to give her her cards and present. Breakfast was waiting for us and set off to work with Reynaldo at 8. Spent the day doing odd jobs which included cleaning the bird cages, feeding the pigs and catching a monkey! We sat on a bench with a piece of string attatched to the cage door, and waited for one of the monkeys to go back in from it´s play time in the surroundig tree´s. How they ever found out that some monkeys were able to be let out and return safely is a mystery, but it´s nice that they are allowed out of the cages for a bit. Aida had prepared a special birthday meal for Anna which was chicken and pasta followed by birthday cake and ... read more

Woke up feeling quite rough from the night before, and spent most of the day walking around town, but both in bad moods. Luckily we had a siesta and decided we were going to have a great night for Anna´s birthday meal. We wanted to got to a local restaurant on the costanera we had seen so walked there and queued for 10 minutes at what we thought was the right place. It wasn´t until we sat down at our table we realised we were in a pizza and pasta restaurant next door, Anna walked outside to confirm we were in the wrong place and signalled to me that it was next door. I had to pretend to go to the toilet and made a break for it just as our waiter was ready to ... read more

We got to Reynaldo´s house at 10 then spent the first hou or so driving around in his truck whilst he did odd jobs and said hello to various people on the way to the supermarket. He seems like a great bloke, always chatting away in Spanish and having a lot of patience with us when he haven´t got a clue what he´s on about. We arrived at the supermarket depot where we loaded on bags of rotting vegatables, and boxes of meat which were either out of date of just cuts they don´t sell. The flies and heat made the experience particularly enjoyable, and the lack of gloves meant we were really ´getting our hands dirty´. We then drove the loaded truck to the park where we unloaded the vegatables, then all sat around ... read more

Had to get up at 6 o´clock to get the 7:15 bus to El Puma, no sign of Dan on the bus, so assumed he must have missed it, but then realised that we didn´t really pay attention to Veronica when she showed us where the park was, and where we were supposed to get off. We then started questioning whether we were in fact on the right bus! Fortunately we recognised our stop and found the park. When we arrived, we met all the other workers and Reynaldo, who seems like a great bloke, but slightly mental. Had a much busier day, feeding the pigs lettuce and topping up all the water etc. Even got to give the old jeep they were doing up a new coat of paint! ... read more

First day at work! Veronica came and picked us up from the house at 8, she gave the 3 of us a lift to the park which was about half an hours drive away. She warned us that we would have to get the bus each day which takes an hour, and can be very busy and extremely hot, unless our boss Reynaldo took a shine to us and offered us a lift. Turns out that he lives opposite our house, so if we end up getting the bus, then we know he must really hate us! Got to the park, and nobody speaks a word of English, we had a brief talking to by a Director called (insert female spanish name here), who explaind through Veronica about the big planes they have for the ... read more

Had our órientation´today where we met 2 other volunteers who are starting at the same time. Dan Haydon and Helen something, seemed really nice both on gap years before uni. We met Veronica and Carolina who are the i-to-i representatives, and spent a couple of hours getting to know them and finding out about Posadas and the work we´ll be doing, as well as a quick spanish lesson from Norma. We were warned about the slow pace of life, and to expect some days at work to be busier than others, and that we had to adapt and enjoy the different culture. Spent the rest of the day walking around town trying to see what there is to do and see. Posadas is a lot bigger than we had imagined, and has loads of cafes, ... read more

Arrived in Posadas after a pretty misserable journey, we were both eager to get to a police station and report the stolen bag. Sat at the station for half an hour waiting for Veronica, but in the end her Mum (Norma) showed up. Norma spoke English which helped, and took us to our home stay where we met the family and dropped our stuff off. We then went to a local police station to report all the details and managed to get a report for the insurance. The police station wasn´t exactly modern, and only had 1 computer and lot´s of people sat around on type writers, which didn´t fill us with confidence. Had lunch with the family and Laura (another volunteer who was leaving as we arrived). They all seem very nice, and Flor ... read more

Kadut oliva... read more
