Australasia » Australia » Western Australia » Kununurra By elluco May 13th 2007 The climb Stuck, in a place with bugger all to do. Still waiting for a canoe partner, which is due to depart today. I decide, rather that sit on my ass and read a book, to try a 1 day trip! Common sense was thrown to the wind on this one, to be honest 1 day trips priced at $180 are aimed at a certain travelling group. Not mine! Got on the bus, average age 50! Strouth! Had a good day, the folks were very friendly, just more mature and of a lesser fitness level shall we say. Did a nice hike up a creeky, gorgey type thing at a snails pace. Suited me to be honest. Hey, Arrived safely (but tired due to no sleep on the train - very uncomfortable and freezing! :( ) at 8am, caught a tram (free! due to the heatwave they are experiencing - woo hoo!) to St Kilda where we are staying and were luckily allowed to chuck our bags in the room but not properly go in until the beds were made at noon. Just chilled having a breakfast, nosy around the area, beach is literally across the road and read some more of our books. Got into the room and then headed straight for the beach - I reckon we lasted an hour if that, this is some heatwave! We showered and went for a kip as have decided if we want a night out here it will have to be tonight as it's ... read more

Although it rained again during the night, a climps of hope was at the horizon when i opened the dorm room door in the morning, and saw a break in the clouds... a sunrise afterall . And so i walked up the lookout not far from the lodge, had my mug of coffee in one hand, and the camera in the other and enjoyed the tranqulity of the morning and the beauty of the desert landscape with Uluru in front and the Olga's to my left. Not a bad way to start the morning. Since most people probably got up to join a tour, i was actually the only person on this little lookout and so although Uluru and Kata Tjuta were a bit more distant ( about 20 km to be exact), the sight was ... read more

T-14 days and counting. Only a few issues remain. The rhinocerous beetles, the japanese, and the jungle out the back (the sound of a droning mower is music to my ears). Soon we will be outa here! I feel like Dr Who and Rose Tyler (only slightly older and fatter) about to be whisked away into another dimension. Hello Tardis. ... read more

1 February 2003 Towards the end of last year, the many trips for work had taken its toll on my car. It had reached 288,000 klms and things were starting to go wrong. After talking to my mechanic and long time friend. He advised me that the car was “living on borrowed time”. The cruise control was going to cost at least a $1000 and a major oil leak wasn’t going to be cheap to fix. My mind was made up, the search for a replacement car started. My girlfriend and I spent a few days looking at different car yards; I was interested in a Holden but decided they weren’t in my price bracket. Looking through the local paper I came across a blue Ford sedan, coming off the production line in 1999. With 50,000 ... read more

I flew to Sydney after my summer internship with McKinsey in London. I'm here on an exchange program for a quarter at the AGSM at University of New South Wales. I wanted to escape the cold weather of Chicago, where I was doing my MBA from Northwestern Univ. As soon as I saw sydney from the sky, I fell in love with the city. Sydney is a beautiful city with a mix of SanFrancisco and London. I did very little studying while I was studying. I stayed on campus, but was often in Coogee to meet up with friends. The hike from Coogee beach to Bondi beach is definitely recommended. The walk goes along the water and at one point, there is a old cemetery on the hill side and the scenery is spectacular. I went ... read more

Oceania » Samoa November 19th 1999

I first met the Samoans at the 1999 Arafura Games in Darwin. They were a great bunch of blokes and invited me to visit Samoa after the Games. I was more than happy to do so! INTRODUCTION This report is based on my trip to Samoa from 19-22 November 1999. There are those in Australia who believe that footy in Samoa (and the Pacific generally) is great novelty value and represents no more than goalposts made from palm trees and coconut juice at half time. This report firmly dispels such notions. The potential to develop footy in Samoa is huge and the Samoa Australian Rules Football Association (SARFA) is just scraping the tip of the iceberg of what can be achieved. Indeed, so successful has SARFA been in such a short space of time that it ... read more

Camping trip to Wilson's Prom in Gippsland, with the cell group from C.O.C. We stayed at a camping site at Tidal River - fully equipped with toilets, hot showers and barbecue facilities - Aussies can't live without their barbies! Mike brought his tents from home - we were all pretty new with camping so he did most of the work putting up the tents. Squeaky Beach is possibly the cutest beach I've ever seen or more importantly, heard. This beach literally squeaks as you walk on the sand! It's so fun!! I could jog on this beach just to hear the squeaks - what a great way to get me to exercise! The most challenging part of the trip was doing the Mt. Oberon Nature Walk. The trail is a challenging 3.4 km climb, sometimes up ... read more

Oceania » Fiji October 15th 1999

I was walking, in Fiji, in the South Pacific, on a sprawling beach, in slight half-circle. All around me, nature was slowly disappearing in the dusk. I was alone. For a moment, I felt as if I had been living here for ages, just like that its first inhabitants. I saw the place like an inseparable whole, as if it was the only one I would ever know, the beach, white line of the sand running along the shadowy vegetation, the outlines of the coconut trees, and the black sea, under the darkening blue sky. I would just be like a Polynesian, faced with the infinity of the world, several hundred years ago. Nothing had changed. He would, like I did, have listened to the wind, as if it was the breath of the world, the ... read more
