Mt Tibrogagan 27 May 2000 One of the larger Glasshouse Mountains, 364m from the base and so steep you need to use both hands and feet to haul yourself up. I went up with a group from work, climbing early so we could have a champagne and chicken breakfast at the top. We hung around the top a little longer to let the bubbly wear off a bit. As we were about to descend, a guy in a lycra suit came jogging up then jogged back down again. And we were scrambling down on our backsides. We passed several groups but some had started around lunchtime. A storm came over and people were stranded on the mountain. Like Mt Beerwah, this one is also very dangerous when wet. ... read more

Oceania » Papua New Guinea January 19th 2000

Papua New Guinea became independent from Australia in 1975. At the time Australian football was the dominant code but rugby league quickly took over. PNG is an interesting place. There are approximately 7 million people in the Pacific and 5 million of them are in PNG. But PNG has yet to realise its full potential. I wrote this report upon my return to Australia: Sport within Society background Sport receives excellent press and TV coverage with the main influence coming from Australia. Australian football, league and union are played in the Dry season and cricket is played in the Wet season. Papua New Guineans are very passionate about their sport. Rugby League is the main sport with a fanatical following. The reason for this is the exposure the sport receives on television. The local free to ... read more

Oceania December 1st 1999

Nauru is not the most exciting place in the world to visit and is difficult to get to. I have been there twice and that's probably enough. It remains the only country in the world that I have managed to run around! It only took a few hours but the heat was incredible. The purpose of the trip was to get a first-hand look at Australian football in Nauru and meet the key people involved. Below is a copy of my report: INTRODUCTION This report is based on my trip to Nauru (or Naoero) from 1 - 7 December 1999. The governing body is the Nauru Amateur Football Association (NAFA) and I am pleased to report that Nauru became the IAFC’s 15th member during my visit. Australian football has been played here since the 1930’s and ... read more

1 June 2003 About nine-thirty in the morning I was in my car, starting a five-hour drive to Griffith in NSW. One stop along the way was to photograph a small flock of sheep. All this year I have been looking for a single black sheep within a flock. The one I found had a mate and it took nearly half a roll of film trying to separate them. I might have one good shot. Mind you, the sheep I saw through the viewfinder was pretty scrubby looking. Just as I turned onto the Kidman Highway north of Jerilderie, I saw a mob of cattle heading along the side of the road. I took half a dozen shots as they passed. I also managed to have a yarn with one of the drovers who told me ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Uluru November 30th 1999

After a bit of a delay in Cairns due to mechanical problems, my flight to Ayers Rock got underway around 9:15 am, and after about 2 hours of flight, and a 30 minute time change (yeah, in Australia they have 30 min. time zone differences) we landed safely in the resort town of Ayers Rock, about 15 km outisde of the National Park. Ayers Rock resort is the only "town" in the center of Australia, and has only one purpose: allow visitors to be close to the Rock and the Olgas and enjoy the magic outback of the red center first hand. The only other access point to the Rock is Alice Springs, about 400 km to the northeast of here. The resort is actually quite amazing... all the land here is owned by the Aboriginals, ... read more

sunrise at Uluru not quite what I imagined, but... Well, it rained pretty much all night, which on the one hand was really cool, so listen to the rain hit the tarp of a tent is one of my favorite outdoor sounds, but... when you came to see the magic of the sun on the Rock... it's not quite as exciting, but... oh well, we take things as they come, and so our small group set out to go to the sunrise spot with the hope to catch a little break in the weather and maybe have the rock light up with some rays. Once again, 100's of people joined us along the street to watch the magic, that never really quite unfolded, but it was nevertheless a great experience, and since i am staying ... read more
