After leaving Queenstown I had a beautiful night at Mt Cook. The sun was shining & the mountains were spectacular. We went for a walk up the Hooker valley to see the Hooker valley lake & the end of the glacier. From there we went to Rangitata where I went white water rafting. 2 boats overturned but luckily not mine so I decided to jump off a rock into the water. Thankfully it was sunny so I dried off quickly. After that I spent 3 nights in Kaikoura, which was a wise choice because there was so much to do & I could enjoy the nice weather. The first day I went fishing with Gerry & Nick. I caught a blue cod & a few sea perch before we pulled up a few crayfish. It was ... read more

Day 10 August 30 Arriving in Nelson was one of the happiest moments of our trip because we were finally out of Westport. We spent two night in Nelson and a full day there. In the morning we tramped up to what is known at the "center of New Zealand." At the top there was a giant needle that pointed down to mark the center of the country. It also over looked the entire city and the ocean which was beautiful. The city its self was very cool and had more then just one street. After lunch Emma and I wanted to ride down to the beach so we grabbed some bikes from our hostel. I always thought the saying "its like riding a bike, you never forget" was a true saying, but Troll seemed to ... read more

Picton to Wellington Well, the day started with free brekky at The Tasman Bay Backpackers in Nelson and a taxi ride to the catch my bus to Picton @ 9.30am. Quite a decent time of day. There were only a few of us on the bus (this seems to be normal) so it was a quiet trip. Only 0215hrs through, once again, amazing countryside with mountains on either side of the road most of the time. The scary thing is that some of the road was right alongside a drop and there were NO BARRIERS! And these little buses boot it! Seriously, 100kms on these windy roads also seems to be the norm - hair-raising to say the least! But such beautiful scenery nearly took my mind off the fact that one wrong move and we'd ... read more

We made our journey across the Cook Straight on a car ferry ride that lasted a bit north of three hours. The skies were clear and we were offered nice views as we left Wellington. The port is inset quite a bit in the bay, so we didn't hit the open sea for over a half an hour. Once the boat cleared the North Island, the South Island was immediately in view. We entered the harbor of the South Island at Picton and were summoned back to our vehicles. We had a two hour drive ahead of us to Mapua, the majority of this was in the dark. We arrived at our new house for the next week, a nice little cabin on an organic orchard on the banks of an estuary. We are looking forward ... read more

NZ day 15 & 16 Aahhh- the serenity- how’s your serenity? Ours is good to thanks. We left Nelson on Mon morning after a wee little bit of shopping- gotta love bargains. We then headed back to Blenheim & a much nicer drive it was- no water falls across the road & the land slips had been cleared- which was a good thing as we were now competing for road space with the semis again ( they had been quiet over the weekend). In fact, it should be noted, that for the first time EVER, we overtook a semi!!!!!!! Can you believe that- I couldn't I can tell you & I put it off until the semi behind me nearly pushed me past, but we did it!!!! Not once, but twicw- or more maybe. We were ... read more

So yet another adventure and one more thing to check off my bucket list. This time it was a three day sea kayaking adventure throught the Able Tasnam national park. The adventure was filled with crystal clear ocean watters and golden beaches. There was also a whole array of birdlife, seals and manta rays for your viewing plrasure. The highlight of this trip was definatly paddleing upto the seal colony and being surrounded be numorus baby seals, jumping and playing all around us. They really are the dogs of the ocean. so playful and loving. The trip started out with a one hour paddle to fishermans island where I enjoied a nice swim and beautiful walk throught the woods. Then some more paddling to north where we found a beautiful gloden beach for lunch and another ... read more

Hi all, To those of you who are reading my blog, I would like to thank you. As you know I generally post some text and then it is followed shortly by some photos. The reason for this is that not all internet kiosks allow you to upload photos to their computers. Also I don't always have my camera on me. Well this entry will be no different and I encourage all to log back on for the photo upload in a week or two because these are the best pictures to date. The Milford track... Suppose to be the finest track in the world and now I know why. It was absolutely stunning, deep valley's surrounded by spectacular steep cliffs. With the rain, the valleys were swarming with waterfalls. At times on the hike I ... read more

Up at 06:00, quick shower, cuppa and were off! We use the GPS to find the ferry terminal, as we don’t want any mix-ups. Being early we miss the worst of the Wellington morning traffic, although it is starting to build up and you can see that it will be gridlock a little later. We find the ferry terminal and check-in and board immediately – all quite painless. We make a beeline for the café on the ferry for a full cooked breakfast before the masses arrive. We eat breakfast and Di makes the comment that she hopes that is the last time she sees it as I have read in the Lonely Planet that the Wellington to Picton ferry crossing can some times be a little choppy!!. We sit and read the morning newspaper for ... read more

The rest of Queen Charlotte Drive has some spectacular scenery and every turn around the windy roads brings you to a different view and a different bay. Most of the little bays are private and there are between 1 and 6 houses each with their private access to the house and the beach, no visitors can get down to the actual beaches. When we arrived in Picton the Bluebridge ferry was just coming into port so we stopped on the hill to watch it for a bit. It kind of gives a bit of perspective about how big the sounds are when you see the ferry coming and it gets dwarfed by the surroundings!! We stopped in Picton to get some cash and then headed to a campsite about 3 mins drive from the centre. Picton ... read more

Kia ora from New Zealand..... so after less than 12 hours in Wellington I checked if there was any update from my travel agent (nope!) and headed off to get the Interislander ferry to take me to the South Island. Farily uneventful trip - had some pancakes for breakfast, got myself a seat at the front inside so had pretty good views. Nothing could have prepared me for how stunning the scenery would be as we headed inland to the town of Picton - have a look at the photos and judge for yourself. When I got to Picton I dragged my bag the furthest I've had to drag it so far and I swear there are some rocks hidden in it that I can't find. I got to the train station and they said the ... read more
