I am a community service coordinator/drug & alcohol support worker and live in Adelaide, South Australia (for now 😊). I have done a bit of travelling in the last couple of years, throughout Asia mostly, and am heading to New Zealand in a few weeks. This time I will be travelling solo which is both exciting and worrying!! :/
I love my job/s but they can be quite tiring both physically and mentally and travelling seems to offer me the 'space' I need to find that calm & happy place again 😊
I get so excited about seeing the world, meeting new people & getting out of my comfort zone by experiencing other cultures. I just wish that I had the funds & the time to travel 12 months of the year 😊

Beautiful Wellington Day 1 - Friday After finding sustenance in my Grande Caramel Macciato in Starbucks, feeling refreshed & refueled, I ventured off into the unknown city (well, unknown to me as everyone else looked like they knew where they were going!). It is so quaint with streets darting off everywhere, people everywhere and little boutique shops that look far too expensive to even walk into! Very arty & chic was the vibe that I got from the city of Wellington. I kept walking and exploring and takings pics and was enthralled by the sights. Wellington has trolley buses...like trams, they are powered by overhead electricity source which they are connected to by cables, but they are buses on wheels, not on tracks. I haven't seen vehicles like these before - fascinating. I kept walking and ... read more

Picton to Wellington Well, the day started with free brekky at The Tasman Bay Backpackers in Nelson and a taxi ride to the catch my bus to Picton @ 9.30am. Quite a decent time of day. There were only a few of us on the bus (this seems to be normal) so it was a quiet trip. Only 0215hrs through, once again, amazing countryside with mountains on either side of the road most of the time. The scary thing is that some of the road was right alongside a drop and there were NO BARRIERS! And these little buses boot it! Seriously, 100kms on these windy roads also seems to be the norm - hair-raising to say the least! But such beautiful scenery nearly took my mind off the fact that one wrong move and we'd ... read more

Wednesday 22/06/11 Greymouth to Nelson 11.30am in Greymouth After the 'pack up' process again this morning (I'm a bit over having to pack up every morning) and booking a taxi to get me to my bus on time this arvo (1pm) and storing my luggage I head off to McDonalds (again!) for brekky. Cheap as - NZ$5.20 for a hot cakes meal including coffee. That's equivalent to about AUS$3.80!! Nice. Well, it turns out to be a bit grey in Greymouth this morning! It's about 7 degrees celcius and rain, rain & more rain! Makes it a bit difficult to get around so I have no alternative but to go shopping!!! Haha. When I travel I don't tend to buy the touristy souvenirs as I find that when I get home I never look at them ... read more

This morning was a bit of a rush due tothe fact that my shuttle was picking me up @ 7.30am which isn't too bad except for the fact that not only did I have to be up and showered and dressed, but all of my belongings also have to be packed up etc. etc. But I am getting better at it. I arrived at the train station in plenty of time and found that they had given me a table of 4 all to myself. Yay. I overheard some of the people on the train talking about the erathquakes in Christchurch. It seems to be on everyone's mind. And funny, but it felt lilke a bit of a relief pulling out of Christchurch. I don't think I was the only one on the train who ... read more

What a great day. It seems that traveling alone is as good as some say. You do tend to meet people and connect, albeit for a day. I must first mention that after a lot of thinking about it I didn't go into the city centre area of Christchurch this morning to have a look at the damage the earthquake did. I really wanted to go and see what it's like but after thinking about it, and considering that I hadn't seen it prior, I felt that it wasn't right to go and see the damage, especially as a tourist. Goulish somehow and disrespectful to the locals. So, I have a new goal now - to see the city of Christchurch when it's been rebuilt :) The morning started hesitantly, as there had been a tremor ... read more

Sunday 19th June 2011 Adelaide, South Australia - Christchurch, New Zealand Well, what a day. Up at 4.30am, get to the airport, catch a flight to Melbourne in order to get the 1200 flight to Christchurch, New Zealand. When I woke up I had a temperature of 39.2 degrees, according to my thermometer.... I actually felt quite unwell and wanted to go back to bed, but hey, you can't miss the plane can you? So, I dosed up on panadol and headed off on my new adventure :/ Sometimes I wonder whether the stress of traveling is really worth it....ask me tomorrow and I'll tell you that it most definitely is! Arriving in Melbourne this morning to see my son made it all ok. As a mum of an adult son who moved away from home ... read more

Well, it's been a rocky week for Australian & New Zealand airlines due to the volcano in Chile sharing it's ash with the rest of the world, mostly in the southern hemisphere. Flights have been cancelled to and from NZ for most of the week. I have been holding my breath for a few days wondering if I'll actually get to NZ or not but Jetstar announced last night that all flights have resumed. I was resigned to (and quite happy to) spending my holidays in Melbourne, Victoria, but am grateful that it looks like all is ok and all flights will be leaving Oz for NZ tomorrow. Phew :)... read more

After an amazing sleep in a 4 star hotel, a wonderful shower with hot water and an incredible buffet breakfast, we felt refreshed and ready to go and explore Cambodia! Our taxi driver arrived on time and hanging tightly on to our bags and cameras we left for the temples. When we arrived at the ticket booth we were told that a one day ticket was US$20, so I handed over a US$50 (was all I had) and within seconds that note had been passed to a chap who whisked it out the back door! The lady handed me back a ticket with no change. So, I waited...and waited....and waited!! I said VERY LOUDLY that I would like my change please. She told me that there is "No change"! I said again "I WOULD LIKE MY ... read more

Well, we made it into Cambodia today with a few dramas along the way but we are safely in our 4 star hotel listening to a live 'lounge' singer whilst on the internet writing you an email. We left Bangkok this morning on the 5.55am train so we were up at 4.30am, checked out of our hotel, caught a taxi to the train station, found the right ticket counter, bought a ticket for the right train and found the right train and were on it 30 minutes early. This all sounds quite easy except for the fact that NOONE speaks english and they nod & say 'yes' to every question we ask! We were quite proud of ourselves at this stage. Little did we know what was ahead of us!! Bangkok to Aranyaprathet (city near ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Rai December 1st 2010

Well, after an uneventful flight to Chaing Rai (1,000+ kms north of Bangkok) last Tuesday (23rd Nov), we landed to a welcoming party from the Maechan Children's Home. 15 of us piled into 2 x vehicles, some more comfortable than others (!!) and drove into Chiang Rai for lunch which consisted of rice, rice, rice, chicken, chilli, pepsi & rice :) After arriving at the Mae Chan Children's Home we sorted out where we were all sleeping and settled in and starting familiarlising ourselves with our environment. Toilets were different and some of us had to learn how to squat - not me, as I was being housed in the main house with western loos & showers :) Very happy about that! When the children came home from school there was lots of excitement about these ... read more
