Geo: -45.0311, 168.663We left the dissapointment of Franz Josef behind us to embark on a most spectacular drive south towards Queenstown. It was one of the prettiest drives I can remember, again maximized by picture perfect weather. Blue skies and sunshine. A half hour south of Franz Josef we stopped for a photo at its neighbour the Fox Glacier. From there it wasnt too far on down the west coast to the township of Haast. Not alot here, a few homes, and a few resteraunts/cafes. From here the road beyond leaves the coast and heads into the mountains. Its usually closed daily from 4-6pm on, and often completely in winter. Time, season and weather was on our side and the way was open. The scenery changed from coast, valleys and streams to a narrow windy mountain road, ... read more

Geo: -45.0311, 168.663 I woke up early so I did not have to queue for shower, my room in Haka lodge was nice with free wifi but my room was on top of the kitchen /lounge with the kitchen open all hours so the noise of people cooking and the smells even at 3 am, kept me awake. The bathroom was very nice but being next to Lounge/ kitchen, it was occupied most of the time and I had to use one on the other section, the staff at the reception were friendly and helpful. Queenstown in the Southern Island of the country is very touristy on the banks of Lake Wakatipu, nestled with snow-capped mountains of the Southern Alps and the rolling farmland with sheep, deer and dairy farms.... read more

Geo: -45.0311, 168.663We dragged ourselves away from the spectacular mountain views of the Mount Cook range to drive to Queenstown and picked up a German girl hitch hiker to entertain us and give us the back packer experience. We dropped her 4 hrs later on a hot afternoon at the Lake shore at Wanaka, where she was hoping to pick up some paid work and finally found our hotel well out of town. We were pleased not to linger in town with all its tourists and Extreme sports Combo excitements. We spent evenings hanging out in our quirky old hotel in a magnificent upgraded suite with views way down below of a beautiful peaceful river entertering a canyon, only broken periodically by the red jet boating engines and screams of adrenalin rush from excited customers zooming ... read more

Geo: -45.0311, 168.663Day 11 - Queenstown to WanakaGiven the fact that the Haast Pass was still not open and bad weather was expected on the West Coast for the weekend we decided to blow Queenstown and spend the day in Wanaka at the junction of State Highway 6 and 8. One highway will take us to the West Coast the other to Lake Tekapo and up the centre of the Canterbury Region to our destination of Hanmer Springs. There were to ways we could reach Wanaka, a windy trek over the infamous Crown Ranges and a flatter route through Cromwell and the Gibson Valley. With Debi very nervous about high windy roads we took the route through the Gibson Valley home to many fine wineries. Temped to stop for a tipple we kept driving as we would ... read more

Geo: -45.0311, 168.663It's no secret that New Zealand is the adventure capital of the world, but Queenstown is the adventure city of New Zealand with views to fall back on. It's a place that is active all year round and doesn't disappoint.I have been here quite a few times but this was the first time for Anna and the minute we stepped off the bus and looked out the view from our accommodation, she had fallen in love with it too. This time we weren't able to benefit from the use of my parents car, so we boarded the Naked bus to Queenstown for an all day ride via Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki, this time with marginally better views of Mount Cook than last time. We stopped briefly at Lake Wanaka, on a glorious warm day ... read more

Bei guter Musik w ... read more

-10°, kein Witz)  Gasflasche tauschen  Heizung wieder an.

Geo: -45.0311, 168.663Today we decided to drive south for a bit as we didn't have anything else to do. Good thing we did because we came across a ton of sheep moving up the road. They were much more orderly than the cows that were on the road and moved pretty quick. Very cute! Stopped at a little town that has a steam engine, but it wasn't running. We came back to Queenstown to do some shopping and have lunch. The big place to go here is Fergberger and so that's where we went. It was delicious! The burgers were huge and I could only eat half. I had a regular burger with brie cheese and Renee had the same, only with blue cheese. Amazing! It had been closed for some renovations and just reopened on ... read more
