After at lot of humming and hahing about where we (Anshu & I) wanted to go to (and there were many exotic locations on our list, from Egypt, Syria, Turkey to Mexico, Guatemala & Jamaica) we finally decided to go visit our own back yard with the worldwide recession at the moment it was a cheaper option budget wise but we were hoping that it would we as spendid as an overseas holiday. HAd no idea what to expect as most of the pics we had seen of the South ISland were winter photos when the entire area is covered in a magical blanket of white snow. We are going in summer - would there at least be a bit of snow? Would it still be magical? There's no turning back as the flights have been ... read more

It has been a slow time at the hotel so it was a good time to take off for a while. It also happened that I decided to apply for a new position in the hotel. So I've transfered from Housekeeping to F&B (Food and Beverage), from Room Attendant to F&B Attendant. I now polish silverware and stock the buffet while making sure that hungry people are kept happy. On Thursday, May 8th at 3:00 p.m. I hopped aboard Atomic Shuttles and headed off towards Christchurch. I only used it as a night stopover on my way to Akaroa. I was a bit surprised to find myself a bit car-sick for the first couple hours. As it turned out my stomach was out of it for a couple of days. Curious... Sitting across the aisle from ... read more

Things were all set for us when we arrived in Queenstown to meet Cam at Southern Laughter Backpackers. We both got hooked up with cleaning jobs straight away and within no time at all we got ourselves snowboarding gear and season passes. Queenstown is such a beautiful place, everywhere you turn is like a picture postcard. There are so many fond memories we will keep with us. The guys Kalen, Kinno, Jonas, Kata, Leona & Blackie meeting us again from Perth was awesome. Paul Poker championships (we would have been lost without the free money and food) Trip to watch the all black in Dunedin with Scotty, Kalen and Kinno on Paul's birthday Crazy Irish Mary and her drunken early morning antics Jen and Cams rants and her misadventures with the bus driver "BP" Mary's 30th ... read more

Adrenaline pumpimg & it was time to move on. Queenstown next stop. The party town of the South Island apparently. It's not a massive town but there are backpackers everywhere. There are a few nice walks in the area with the mountains all around, so I couldn't complain of boredom even though I was on my own for most of the time. The Fernhill track & the Ben Lomand track are nice. The latter is a killer as you walk the last hour to the summit.....I thought I'd never reach the top. Thankfully I was rewarded with a aspectacular view of the lake & nice blue skies. In great anticipation we headed to the Skyline reataurant at the top of the gondola for a buffet meal for Valentine's Day. An all-you-can-eat buffet. The food was lovely ... read more

Hey kia ora everyone, first sorry bout the lack of emails and blogs over summer-i hope you had a great one filled with beach, beers, good times and good mates. I had an epic summer working on the Routeburn and Greenstone tracks. Was hard to belive I was getting paid to walk amongst such amazing scenary, the mountains, rivers and lakes really are breathtaking-but of course pictures are always better than words so ill let the photos do the talking. Apart from being out on the track 80% of the time got a few waves around Catlins and Riverton ways, went back north for Nanas 80th and saw the whanau, few concerts, rugby games, dart river jet boat safari (wicked!) Moved in with Keri and all is swell, so now track has finished this season ... read more

Geo: -45.0311, 168.663Great day today! We flew to the south island yesterday and picked up our rental car to drive as far as Fairlie, camping at a holiday park. It rained on us a bit in the night but otherwise slept great in the tent! And because it's a holiday park, we had the luxury of putting our rain fly on the permanent press cycle for 20 minutes to dry it out before packing it up for the drive. We were at picturesque Lake Tekapo by about 9:00 where an historic rock church with a mere six pews sits atop a hill, overlooking, obviously, Lake Tekapo, which is a rich shade of turquoise from the glacial runoff. Then it was on to Mt. Cook Nat'l Park (no admittance fee like there is in the US) where ... read more

Got into Queenstown and immediately thought it would be awesome to live here - stunning weather, plenty of activities and in 6 months time - a ski heaven. Took a wander around and booked up some activities. Next day started off with a trip up the gondola for some great views over QT and more luge rides - similar to Rotorua. Cheap as chips and great fun again. Took some time to do some paragliding aswell off the top of the hill to get a bird's eye view. BUNGY - did it! Felt apprehensive but ok, that is until I shuffled to the front of the ledge. Legs tied together so looking down to check my feet, took a look over the edge and totally bricked it. Froze on the first countdown but took the dive ... read more
