So first blog in quite a while i think this one. It's been a great few weeks, have been on two great trips (Longbeach and Christchurch) and am also actually loving my lectures in general, one of our lecturers (the one teaching me 'Music in Art') could actually be a stand-up comedian, he manages to wring a joke every minute out of music's representation in victorian portrait art - no easy feat. Anyway Longbeach is the first trip I went on a couple of weeks ago, its two big caves besides the sea about half an hour's drive from Dunedin and we went there to spend the night in one of them. I knew only a few people out of the fifteen there properly, so it was great to meet a whole bunch of people and ... read more

Nothing like a painfully bad pun on the NZ weather to start a blog entry. As you've guessed its wet here, and so there's been no chances to go to the beach, surf or any of that stuff lately. Still we did go to a big rugby game yesterday, which was mental but pretty good. Very rowdy, even before we'd left one girl had to go to hospital she was bleeding so bad from a glass cut on her foot; then one of our friends saw this and fainted from the amount of blood she saw and had to be hydrated and looked after. Definitely not the best start, it was also ridiculously busy and people were pretty much shoving each out of the way to get on the free coaches that showed up to take ... read more

With poor weather heading in from the West, we headed south to the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin to try a catch a glimpse of penguins in the wild. The best brownie cheesecake hybrid can be had in a small town just north of Dunedin at the local cheese factory. To burn off some of those calories, we took a walk to see the Moeraki Boulders. The perfectly spherical rocks that appear out of nowhere on the sandy beach are mineral formations that were left behind as the cliffs eroded. We drove through Dunedin onto the Otago Peninsula towards a beach which has a camouflaged penguin observation building. We waited patiently for two hours and were rewarded with seeing two yellow-eyed penguins come ashore and make their way up a steep hill towards their nests. ... read more

Geo: -45.8746, 170.503Tonight we're at Larnach Castle in Dunedin after waking this morning in Te Anau on the west coast of the southern island. We rose to a cloudless sky over Lake Te Anau (forgive the constant weather reports but we so appreciate the sun after the rainy beginning to our vacation), breakfasted with the other patrons at the Shakespeare House ("Eggs Benni with Salmon"), and headed south by about 9 AM. We drove as far south as the little hilly road would carry us, straight to a DOC trailhead that departed from private property, followed a skinny trail through the dense jungle vegetation, and emerged on the other side at the Tasman Sea. The coast was comprised of white, fist-sized rocks in perfect spheres that crashed together with each turn of the waves in a ... read more

So I was driving up the Otago peninsula, just before sunset, with the light slowly dying, having just arrived to Dunedin, the neighboring city (a real city!). Why? To try and see some bird that is not only flightless, which is pretty common around here, but actually prefers to swim. Penguins usually go out of the water at sunset, at least in this time of the year, to feed their chicks, which can't swim yet and stay in the nest on dry land. I knew those birds are common on the Otago peninsula, but I didn't know exactly where, and whether it's late enough for them to come out, but early enough so I could see them. Well, the first problem was solved in the usual manner, I just followed the crowds (in this case, a ... read more

Rachy again Dunedin is quite a large place. It feels bigger than Christchurch to me, perhaps due to its university, and the fact that our stay coincided with the freshers’ induction week. (Now I know what 500 teenagers dressed in togas maurading through a city centre look like..) Our campsite was on the edge of town, next to the beach, though we never saw it. There was certainly no feeling of seaside where we were. However, just a short drive onto the Otago peninsula there were many natural delights in store for us. On our first full day in the city we headed out, first visiting the Albatross centre at Taiaroa Head, where the birds failed to provide much of a display for us. (We might have seen one - might have been a big gull…) ... read more

Hello everyone! It's been a while since we updated our blog, and we've done a lot in the last few days so thought it was about time you all had an update! On arriving in Dunedin, which was about 4pm, we decided to head straight to the end of the Otago Peninsula while the weather was good. The scenery is lovely here, and we managed to book onto the 6pm Royal Albatross tour, located at the tip of the headland. This was brilliant - we'd never seen Albatross before but had always wanted to. See the picture attached. They average around 1m tall, and with a wing span of around 3m, so they're big birds! The Royal Albatross centre have an observatory to look out on the nesting birds and we were treated to a lot ... read more

The Cadbury's Factory is awesome , we struggled there , Collen our guide was this excitable old lady who handed out chocolate bars if you answered her questions right. I got one, Red didn't .... she claimed she wasn't jealous but if you saw her jumping up and down answering questions, and hissing "I answered it first!" to me, you would think better! The factory itself is really interesting, totally captured my attention and really it's no surprise as Cadbury's has been part of my life for like, ever!! The bit on Easter Eggs really captured our attention...maybe because we really felt the loss of them this year, no eggs in Hong Kong or Beijing...devestating! As we were heading up to see chocolate bars being made, namely the most popular in New Zealand, the Moro, Irene ... read more
