Woke up to a better day, the rain had stopped! Got the tent down, had breakfast and off to the Otago Peninsula. This area is known for it’s blue penguins, albatrosses and fur seals. We drove along the coastal road first up to the tip of the peninsula. We walked down to one of the beaches and there were male fur seals all over the place, sleeping their dinner off! The main area is fenced off to protect them but 4 had come around to our side and were not afraid! We got quite close to get some photo’s. One of them was on his back and snoring - so funny! Sounded like a motorbike ticking over! They were lovely to watch. We walked along the sand and saw a dead penguin  , the sign ... read more

I spent my fist afternoon in New Zealand strolling through the expansive Dunedin Botanical Gardens. The first thing that struck me were the things that seemed so similar to home; the vibrant summer rose blossoms, the call of gulls clamoring for scraps of lunch leftover and the smell of lush undergrowth after a warm rain however what I soon realize is the subtle yet substantial differences that set this new place apart from any other I have visited. As I walk down a solitary path I notice that the sounds of the near by road masked by dozens of exotic bird calls, at first they blended into the ambient noises of the gardens but I soon realized many where calls that I had never heard before. The rhododendron that Washington is famous for grow taller with ... read more

Yesterday we made the long drive from Queenstown to Dunedin. It was about 3.5 hours drive. We went to Penguin Place. It just so happens that the farmer who owns the land decided to turn it into a reserve for the penguins that called his backyard their home. They come and go on the beach in his backyard. He built some little homes for them and they just chill out there. It was very cool. Depending on what time of the year you go, there are different things happening. We went right at the time of breeding and egg laying. Last week one of the eggs hatched and we were able to see a rare moment when the penguin was feeding her baby. The penguins that are seen on the reserve are the rarest kind in ... read more

"It doesn"t matter if the All Blacks win or lose. Especially in Dunedin they will make party and drink a lot after the game."

Well, It's been a while. I have gotten so many threats from my mother to write a blog that I doubt she will let me cross the threshold to enter my house when, and if, I return to the United States. Well, I'm sitting here, in an internet cafe, at 4 in the morning, listening to the bloomsburg game, so I thought I'd get alot of what has happened down while I essentially sit here on the computer, listen to the radio feed, and surf the internet. (It's 14-0 bloom right now, over the #5 team in the country) I'm living in a city called Dunedin right now, which is on the south Island, and is the southernmost city with a university to the world. When I last wrote, I was living in Wellington, which is ... read more

The short answer to that title is go to Queenstown; though as I have a little time to kill I might as well go through how i managed it... I headed up to Queenstown this week, travelling by myself and hoping to meet up with a bunch of different groups of people whilst there - everyone had a big shake up of plans, so after meeting up briefly with some fellow students, I was by myself and decided to get to know the people in my backpackers. Queenstown has a lot more english people visiting and living in it, the first I met was a posh sounding but totally unspoilt girl who was cooking noodles whilst washing her clothes in the other sink with her free hand, and told me about travelling all across Asia and ... read more

So, last Friday Sarah, Emma and I loaded up our bags and caught the InterCity bus to Dunedin. We stopped at Timaru and Oamaru along the way. Was pretty cute little trek I thought, some of the towns we passed through had less than a handful of actual traffic lights. Got to see a lot of the countryside, a lot of sheep and cows. At one point we actually passed a field of grazing deer, which I found to be pretty funny because you see wild deer in BC, though you'd never see a wild sheep or cow. I might have to try some New Zealand venison sometime just because of that. We got to Dunedin around 8 pm and found our hostel which was decent actually, warm and cozy with no upper bunks, bonus. Friday ... read more

It's been a crazy couple of weeks, with probably too much to fit in to one blog, so sorry if i race through a bit... Firstly after my night in Wellington I headed north-west to Wanganui where my friend Karthick lives and then we drove east to Taupo and got caught in the craziest snowstorm along the way. Two feet deep snow in places, sky as dark as night and visibility of perhaps about 30 - 40 metres. It wasn't long before we got caught in a big traffic jam, in a line of cars, behind two trucks stuck on the other side of the hill. Quite a bad situation to be in in New Zealand where there's often no phone coverage, and no payphones etc. outside of towns and also the added worry of being ... read more

So after spending a little longer on the the rain soaked and sandfly infested (but otherwise beautiful) west coast, eating chips and looking at lakes we headed off to Christchurch to pick up the long awaited Aimee. We stopped off on Arthur's pass on the way where we had our first contact with the mountain parrot 'Kea'. Arthur's pas is amazing, it goes across the southern alps and then the Canterbury planes to Christchurch. We spent a little while there, partying with Al, Edith, Hippy and Josie and doing some shopping then on the wednesday morning bright and early (8am anyway) Aimee arrived after a mammoth 30 hours of traveling. It was really fantastic to see her and after suitable introductions had been done (she didn't really know Ben and Sarah) and coffee had been drank ... read more

Well, after our doubts over whether we would ever see the sun again in our last blog - we did!! On a tip that the weather was coming from the south we went south to the tourist town of Hokitika (although we were going there anyway...). The sun came out and we browsed shops selling local jade and had some fish and chips, (or seeing as 2/3 of us didn't eat fish.. just chips. Ben had a particularly unhealthy fried doughnut with a chocolate bar melted inside it if I remember correctly...). We went to the beautiful aquamarine Hokitika Gorge then tried to find somewhere to camp where there were no sandflies! Arthurs Pass/Christchurch Next day we headed over the Arthurs Pass back to Christchurch to pick up Chris' friend Aimee who was ariving from England ... read more
