With poor weather heading in from the West, we headed south to the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin to try a catch a glimpse of penguins in the wild. The best brownie cheesecake hybrid can be had in a small town just north of Dunedin at the local cheese factory. To burn off some of those calories, we took a walk to see the Moeraki Boulders. The perfectly spherical rocks that appear out of nowhere on the sandy beach are mineral formations that were left behind as the cliffs eroded. We drove through Dunedin onto the Otago Peninsula towards a beach which has a camouflaged penguin observation building. We waited patiently for two hours and were rewarded with seeing two yellow-eyed penguins come ashore and make their way up a steep hill towards their nests.
