After an amazing night’s sleep I wake up, and lay on the double mattress watching the sunrise over the lake. We are up, breakfasted, the hut swept and on our way by 8.30am. Today’s walk is a nice easy three hours around the lake edge, with a quick climb at the end to reach the car park. Joan asks me to drive down the half hour or so down the part sealed mountain road back to the village, its great fun! In St Arnuad we pick up Ana’s car and then all head to the only establishment in the area to sell drinks – the hotel, where I enjoy a lovely 3 berry cider – with berry names I have never heard of before, but it sure tastes good! After we say our goodbyes and Ana, ... read more

After a lovely nights sleep I go out for a run this morning, along the seafront, back to Thunanui beach. I sit on the beach for a while and enjoy watching the early morning haze over the sea, with the mountains peaking above the haze in the background. I have a nice chilled day for once, making the most of wearing normal clothes and not walking attire. After doing some laundry and sorting my kayaking trip in Abel Tasman for a few days time, I enjoy fully exploring Nelson in the sunshine. The most notable points include the bead museum, filled with thousands of jars of beads - I was tempted to try and make something in there, but my creativity failed me, and my need for the toilet won, so I headed out to find ... read more

I have a fairly long bus journey from Kaikoura to Blenhim, then a 45min wait and then from Blenhium to Nelson, all in a small, old, hot and rather smelly minibus. It is a stunning drive, especially nearing Nelson, through the Ria valley pass. But it is much like going to a ski resort in the mountain, with lots of very winding steep roads, and we have to stop a few times on the way as poor little boy gets out to be sick. When I arrive I explore the town, for New Zealand its actually quite large – the largest place by far I have been to since Queenstown, and it is rather exciting! I wonder round the shops, and even try on the odd dress and skirt…just to make me feel more human, and ... read more

Arrived in Nelson just after lunch as it was Sunday most of the shops were closed. Decided to have a walk around, visited the cathedral, followed by a visit to WOW, world of Wearable art, great fun. The event started in Nelson but is now on such a scale that it has been moved to Wellington. It is a mixture of art, fashion and theatre. Some of the costumes were just amazing. There were ones made from metallic materials that looked like flax you find in NZ, some made from padded material very eccentric but great fun. Designers come from all over the world now and there is not another event like it in the world. They are not fashion designers more like artist who work with materials. Have a look at the website As you ... read more

Today we met at 8:00 for breakfast tastefully prepared by Paulina. There was an assortment of homemade breads, muesli, jams and jellies, fruits. She offered us a Ginger, lemon and honey drink which was very good. Everything was made with good health in mind. Having only 1 full day in Nelson, we asked Paulina to give us some ideas and she had plenty. First on the list was a stroll through the Saturday Market which showed off the wares, art and food of the locals. It was small, but vey enjoyable. Next, we went to the Queen's Gardens where we saw a duck flotilla coming towards us expecting to be fed. Luckily for them were other people who obliged. The Gardens weren't overly large, but there were 12 different types of trees that were featured. In ... read more

On awaking this morning, John was not feeling well. Another traveler bites the dust. Having decided to forgo breakfast, the rest of us met in the kitchen for a continental breakfast, but not before we took photos of Mt. Cook and Mt. Tasman. The sky was blue and not a cloud in site. We were very pleased. After breakfast, we collected John, stopped at the local grocery store and picked up some 7-Up and antacids and we were on our way. We had a long drive ahead of us to Nelson expecting it to be 9 hours because we had to cross several mountain ranges. Deb and I were tossed back and forth relentlessly from all the curves in the road. We stopped at a small town to stretch our legs and pick up a sandwich ... read more

We set off from Wellington bright and early and jumped on the Interislander ferry. The crossing was very calm which came as a surprise given the stories we had heard from previous trips. The ferry pulls around the headland from Wellington and crosses the sea fairly quickly. The next two hours are spent navigating through the Marlborough Sounds before pulling into a pretty little town called Picton. We had some great views when crossing as the water was really still and the sun was shining. We even saw a couple of dolphins pass by. Once we had reclaimed our rucksacks (yes - on a ferry in NZ you have to check-in your luggage) we found our Magic Bus waiting just outside the ferry office and set off for Nelson. The scenery had become endless fields of ... read more

Off we go, Today we journey down the Wild West coast to Greymouth, NZ. Should be about 4 hours but with photo opps, longer. Yesterday was a last run through the hills and dales. Today looks like another "cracker" of a day. Maybe rain on Friday? Here are some pics from yesterday. Sorry this is so short as we have to leave early. Blessings Lowell... read more

Summer has finally arrived. I have dug out my shorts. The ferry trip from Wellington was very smooth. Which is Not always the case. The best is the last hour coming in through Queen Charlotte Sound. We are now in Nelson on the South Island. The sunniest region in New Zealand. Today was a planning day. Tomorrow we will drive up to Able Tasman Natl. park and do a coastal walk. We have experienced a earthquake when we were in Wellington. Nothing major but quite strange. Here are some images from our crossing yesterday As always Lowell... read more
