So Monday dawned and I dragged my weary bones into the car to navigate the 2-hour drive to the road-end below Mt Holdsworth. Battling some Wellington-bound commuter traffic for the first half hour, then queuing up to get past the results of the guy who decided to start his week by plowing his truck into a concrete electricity post, dropping the post and the lines skillfully across the road. Eventually managed to start heading in the right direction (i.e. away from Wellington) and made it to Featherston to stop for a decent coffee and a spot of light breakfast (at the Everest cafe...). Then onwards to the road-end, final re-packing of the pack, some cunning hiding of important things in places within the car where a thief might not think to look beyond the obvious bag ... read more

Geo: -41.2708, 173.284We enjoyed a sleep in and leisurely start to the day. We woke to find the heavy rain of last night had passed leaving relatively clear blue skies. We checked out of our Blenheim accommodation and drove north to check out the coastal town of Picton, where the ferry departs for Wellington and the North Island. Picton was a pretty place, a small beach town, surrounded by lush forest overlooking a turquoise bay and impressive fjord. After some time here, we were ready to start todays main objective; tasting Marlborough wines. Our first stop at Saint Clair was a bit of a fail, the winery being closed for renovation. Fortunately there was a local foods business on site with cheeses, fudge, mushrooms and honey available for tasting. We walked away with one of the best ... read more

Today we dropped off one vehicle and picked up another. We have downgraded quite a bit. We now have a Nissan bluebird about 5 years old. We made it to Richmond today. As we don't have our bed on wheels we have booked into a cabin. It is very comfortable and at least Pete and I can move around at the same time. Yesterday we caught a bus into Christchurch and had a walk around the city. It was quite depressing when you see all the devastation that was caused by the earthquake. It reminds you of how insignificant we all are in the scheme of things. We drove through more spectacular scenery today. We stopped at the same bakery we had stopped at the day before.... read more

In Franz Josef, my new friend Luz and I, loaded up on the bus to Nelson. We continued to chat and watched the scenery go by, occasionally nodding off due to the lack of sleep (lots of snoring going on in our 5-share room last night). So, unfortunately I missed a lot of the spectacular scenery. We stopped for lunch at a creepy possum lunch place where I met a friendly goat and Luz met a man from Barcelona who only spoke spanish. So, I left them to their spanish chatting - he was getting off in Hokitika to catch a train that would take him over the Southern Alps back to Christchurch. We boarded and continued our journey to Nelson with short stops at Hokitika and Greymouth, both appearing to be worthwhile villages to explore. ... read more

Donderdag 9 Januari 2014: Om 11u schiet ik wakker en realiseer me dat ik me ferm overslapen heb. Ik had men wekker wel gehoord maar dacht nog even te blijven liggen. Dat even werden 3 uur! Ik ben in men nopjes.

Dan beland ... read more
