Went in to Nelson town today as they have a weekly market, it was full of crafts and foody stuff so we had a good time. The sun was shining and it felt warm, the first day of summer. We then drove out to a winery that is owned by a friend of Richards. There are about 20 acres or more of vines producing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling. We sampled some and bought some, and our hosts helped us with our travel plans for the South Island the name of the vineyard is called Greenhough and its sold in the UK so look out for it. We then made our way back to the beach and enjoyed a bit of sunbathing the first in New Zealand. Returned to Nelson and booked up a ... read more

Geo: -40.7355, 172.659As those of you who know me, I am a bit of a clothes-horse. I love variety in style and colour in what I wear and condensing my clothing apparel to one backpack and the limited choices for 9 months is a challenge for me. On top of that, encountering cold weather for weeks on end meant wearing the same thing over and over, perhaps changing up which layer came first! Well, we have finally hit some warm weather and I feel a release – being able to vary my clothing choices and finally being able to wear a lovely little merino tunic I purchased in Dunedin. Freedom! Life is good. And very uncomplicated at this time in our lives, as you can tell by my deep thoughtfulness :)Golden Bay is a bit of ... read more

We are now in the south island and after a very wet and windy overnight stay in Havelock we drove for 1 hour to Nelson. Apparently a scenic trip but the rain blotted most of it out. We did however see it in all it's glory on the return journey. Stayed 2 nights in Blenheim which is the capital town of the Marlborough wine region. Had lunch and wine tasting at Wither Hills vineyard then went onto Auntsfield Estate by personal invitation of the marketing manager whom we met at a wine dinner in Lincoln. Great food and wine and got to taste the 2012 savignon blanc and pinot noir which you guys in the UK will have to wait for until next year. Wineries over here are not as atractive as the European versions bearing ... read more

Wow, it is sooo green here and it's raining!!! Haven't seen rain like this since I left in March. Funny the things you miss. Was listening to Kim Hill on National Radio this morning at the European Book Fair where she was interviewing one of the key people who put the NZ Pavillion together. So much of the writing that comes from NZ is rooted in our passionate relationship with the landscape. That just rang a bell with me and is so true. How I miss the sea, the hills, the look of the landscape. Should that stop me from leaving here and exploring different parts of the world? No, because I can always come home to this magnificent beautiful country of ours. Took 6 days and went to League City just south of Houston and ... read more

Our bus to Nelson arrived at 2:30pm and, as seems to be par for the course in New Zealand, was an absolute jaw droppingly beautiful drive. The 4 hours flew by and in a strange way I was a bit gutted when it finished! Our first evening in Nelson was spent wandering the streets as the city shut down for the night....at 7pm. One thing however, is that this city/town is so very pretty, like what I would imagine a small US town in the 60s would have been. The next day, Jim and Zaidee rocked up in their 70s car for a day of art-nouveau coffee shops and town walking. Little did they know that we had already been for an early morning run and scoped out 'the centre of New Zealand'. This is, as ... read more

I headed off early this morning for the long journey back across the South Island to Wakefield nr Nelson, where I was staying for the night before getting the ferry the next day. This route pretty much took me back across the way I had come the day before but using the more northern route of the Lewis Pass! Firstly I headed up the coast before cutting inland. The terrain on this route was amazingly very different to Arthurs Pass. The land was rolling green hills like a higher and steeper version of the Quantock Hills. The Lewis Pass cut through large pine forests before climbing up over the mountains and back down to the northern coastline where Nelson is situated. On the way I saw loads of signs saying Stop Didymo and Frack Free Canterbury ... read more

Sunday 6th May Another bright sunny day. (from here on, the words in this blog are taken directly from Marys' diary. Much more reliable than my memory as this is a retro blog) Drove away from Nelson at 9.30am along completely changed waterfront: high tide had covered the rock formations, calm water - quite pretty but no chance to stop for a pic. Headed straight up a steep winding mountain road again in the Richmond Range pass and here we nearly got taken out by a speeding semi which came up behind us and had no intention of slowing down. Lucky there was a small 'pull over' on the verge of a hill pass and no sooner had I braked and pulled over he roared past and nearly swiped us off the edge! We were amazed ... read more

Saturday 5th May We were up early on Saturday morning to drive in from the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park to the centre of Nelson to go to the much celebrated morning markets. Didn't need an alarm, the aircraft taking off over our van woke us up! This is why we made our "mad dash" up from Kokitika yesterday and in doing so we missed out on seeing some places that we originally had hope to see. We had read in quite a few different places that the Nelson Sat markets were "the best...etc". So in need of some last minute gifts before we went home we decided to give it a go! We got going early as we wanted to take Crowded House into the town and park somewhere near the markets and had discussed with ... read more

Friday 4th May Our overnight at Hokitika was spent enjoying a good cooked dinner and some wine in Crowded House and we had no real reason to venture out to sample the 'nightlife' of Hokitika as it was pretty chilly and we were in need of a good nights sleep so on Friday morning we did a bit more shopping for the kids, topped up with diesel and then headed off north towards Greymouth. One of the 'joys' of driving in another country is some of lifes little surprises you come across. We were a bit open mouthed when just north of Hokitika we encountered a roundabout with a railway crossing right thru the middle of it! Next, we come across a narrow one lane car bridge with a rail line running down the middle. No ... read more
