We ... read more

Back in the relative civilisation of Glenorchy. Will go back and post the tramp descriptions on ther previous days so look there for tales of knees, ankles, feet, dutch financiers, american river-runners, heat, sweat, toil, glaciers, and sandflies galore. Now waiting for my transport to Queestown. This is one of those rest day things again so a bit uncomfortable (from a temptation point of view) sitting out in the wind this morning with the head of the lake (Wakatipu) on one side and mountains on all sides. Will be collecting a car again tomorrow though so will indulge some whims then me thinks. And now back in Queenstown watching England make really hard work of bowling the Aussies out but Hussey is whacking us all over the park. Ho hum.... read more

Very noisy night in Dart hut but I sleep well on my precious mattress having managed to shuffle a table and some benches out of the way and claim a wee private corner of the main room. Slow start this morning - the feet are feeling the effects of yesterday's effort. I shake Owen firmly by the hand and thank him warmly "well, couldn't have you kipping on a bench after a hike like that mate". Then it's back on the trail. 6-8 hours to Daley hut is the published agenda. Sore feet give me a gentle pace but a desire to get out of the sun drives me to the hut in about 5 hours and I claim a bunk. As it turns out, we're ok for bunks this time (lucky, as the hut is ... read more

Well, we officially have nothing new to report since our last blog (unless you want to hear more about snowboarding), but we did spend a glorious day off together up in Glenorchy, where we've not visited since winter began. I just thought you would enjoy seeing the photos from our day! Next week we are heading across the South Island to Christchurch for five days, so we should have lots of good stories and photos for you. Until then...hug a palm tree for us or something!!... read more

It had been an eventful day from the start. After four straight days of the most spectacularly clear, sunny, cool autumn weather, I decided this week would be a perfect time to splurge on the all-day horse trek up in Glenorchy and Paradise (about 45 minutes up the road from Queenstown). Honestly, I'll find any excuse to drive up to Glenorchy, as it has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth, completely unspoiled by human activity (the town has a population of 320 people, if that gives you any idea). Not to mention the winding road alongside Lake Wakatipu to get there is like having your own personal 48-kilometer go-cart track to fly around! Blare some good music, roll the windows down, take in the mountain scenery...it's a good drive, even in our ... read more

Dec 3-6 - Call it what you want - hiking, tramping, trekking - it's a great adventure and a wonderful new found sport for the Shivers Family! We left Timaru on Wednesday and it was a gorgeous summer day. We spent the afternoon in Queenstown checking in with the Dept. of Conservation (D.O.C.) to pick up our hut passes and sign in for the tramp. The forecast for Thurs and Friday was terrible - rainy, cold and winds gusting up to 120 km. Our plan was to get a bus ride to The Divide, hike up to Lake MacKenzie Hut on Thurs, up over the pass on Friday to Routeburn Falls Hut, and down the mountain and out on Sat. Sat and Sun forecast looked amazing and the D.O.C. recommended that we alter our trip by ... read more

Glenorchy, Routeburn Track November 24, 2008 The road from Queenstown to Glenorchy is very twisty and narrow with several one-lane bridges, but it is also one of the most beautiful roads I’ve ever been on. It runs alongside Lake Wakaputi, which would be nice enough, but add in mountains, green meadows, waterfalls, and wildflowers and you get something pretty special. Today was even cloudy and it was still pretty. On a blue sky day, it must be too much to take. One end of the Routeburn Track in Mt. Aspiring National Park starts near Glenorchy, which is one of the reasons we wanted to go there. The Routeburn is one of the “Nine Great Tracks” in NZ and we wanted to see what it was about. Glenorchy has about 250 people, but it has a very ... read more
