24th February 2009 - MEETING GEORGE, DAMN THOSE SAND FLIES & SCRUMMY PANCAKES!!! We got up around 6 and were quiet as mice as we got dressed and got our things ready for our day out at Abel Tasman National park. Didn't wake anyone up I don't think either such considerate people that we are!! Once we had eaten breakfast and made our packed lunches for the day (yoghurt included) we got in the car and were on the road before 7am. Nats turn to drive today so I just took in the view. Once again it was magnificent and like something from a postcard!! Truly amazing!! We made good time and were at our destination of Kaiteriteri by 8.30/9am. We checked in at the desk and then had a little walk along the beach to ... read more

Three days staying at Kaiteriteri and doing a section of the Abel Tasman coastal track each day via SeaShuttle (fast catamaran boats). Start at furthest N point (Mutton Bay) and working our way towards Kaiteriteri. First day nice and sunny - but (for a variety of reasons) we missed return Shuttle and had to return by AquaTaxi instead! Today rather damp and due to fast falling tide had to help push the SeaShuttle off the sand before we could get back!... read more

24/2/09 = Abel Tasman & The Amazing George :) Alarm went off at 5:55am. Way too early to get up. Really didn't want to get up, especially in dark, but slid down ladder anyway, picked up clothes set out night before and skulked off to bathroom to get ready. Washed, changed, made porridge breakfast (need to good stuff now to warm me up) and went to finish getting ready while porridge cooled down; Goldilocks eat your heart out! Lunch ready, we both ready and set off for Abel Tasman at 6:45. My turn to drive today and set off in direction of Kaiteriteri to get water taxi. Well, tried to set off in that direction, but wasn’t as straight forward as first thought and got a little lost. A few minutes on hard shoulder sorted us ... read more

Motueka Kaiteriteri Murchison Greymouth I've been meaning to mention that it doesn't get dark until around 10:00 this time of year! These days are insanely long and its easy to take advantage of them. The pictures of the sky were taken at 9:20p.m. Its hard to believe that a 12 hour flight can take you to a different season. Also hard to believe is the fact that I won't experience winter at all this year- though the last few days here in NZ have accounted for more inches of rainfall than I've seen in three years in San Diego. And NO, the toilets don't flush the opposite direction! You guys must have had those fingers crossed and then uncrossed them. We left the gloom and rain of Nelson behind with hopes of scoring some blue skies ... read more

Day 164: Wedneday 10th December - Returning to the South Island Nelson is a small city (it would be a town in the UK) of 50,000 people, which makes it the third biggest settlement on the south island after Christchurch and Dunedin. Its also the sunniest city in New Zealand and the weather is living up to its name. We arrive late in the afternoon, and the first thing I do is call up to book a place on a walking/kayaking tour in the nearby Abel Tasman national park. That done its off to the bar for the free beer tasting session. This is followed by my first roast dinner since leaving the UK, Yorkshire puddings and all. If it wasn't for the sunny weather in mid-December I could almost be at home! After dinner its ... read more

Day 518 (28.08.08) One of the areas we'd really wanted to explore was the Abel Tasman National Park with it's coastal tracks and tiny beaches and inlets making for a great place to tramp. We headed up the coast on a water taxi stopping briefly for a look at the Split Apple Rock and the Seal Colony on the way. Towards the end of our journey we were also joined by a friendly bottlenose dolphin who had a great time ducking and diving in the wake from our boat. We disembarked at Tonga Bay and began our walk along the excellent track that hugs the coastline of the park. We tramped through native bushland and past waterfalls, streams and bays with barely a soul for company (the benefits of being here in the winter time). It ... read more

Hi from Kaiteriteri (kuy-tear-e-tear-e)... Wow, it has been a truley wonderful week. When I last wrote, I was waiting for the weather to clear to go on my next hike. The next day, I had the break I was hoping for and headed out for a three day trek through Tongariro National Park. It's a big tourist attration because they have the Tongariro crossing which is a one day hike over a couple of volcanoes and with some beautiful emerald green lakes. To start my trek, I got on the tourist bus and was dropped off with the hundreds of others making the one day hike. It was funny to hear some of the comments and complaints, and to see how ill prepared and out of shape some people were for this hike. It is UP ... read more

SORRY GUYS ITS GONNA BE A LONG ONE Wow!!...so where do i start?...Its been already 4 1/2 weeks, time is flying by here in NZ was meaning to blog you all but its a little difficult when your on the road with 3 other girls. I must admit i was a little cautious about travelling with others for 5 1/2 weeks, especially as i have been travelling alone for the last 6 months and enjoying my independent of making all my own decision, although at times it can be a little lonely and tiring but its never for long. It has turned out perfectly, my decision to join Nadine, Anouk (both girls i met in Australia on my Canoe Safari) & Patti (Nadine friend from back home). The simple idea of hiring a car and camping ... read more
