Some photos of the aftermath of Cyclone Becky on Hikurangi Swamp. They are either taken from our house, or from down in the valley below us. POSTSCRIPT - since I am updating this due to that server crash, I'll add that this 150 year storm was followed three months later by another one! Similar views that time too, but with more trees down as the wind was very strong second time around.... read more

Hello! Just to kick start this little travel escapade I thought I would upload a couple of photos from the recent (it was this year! So it counts) Whananaki trip. I like how I couldn't find Whananaki in the list of places, so the closest I get is Whangarei. Dear old Whangarei... I won't miss you! ... read more

The next day after reading in Lonely Planet decided to do another long haul to Whangarei. 24klms off the coast are the Poor Knights Islands rated by Jacques Cousteau as in the top ten dive sites in the world . I just had to have a dive there. After 2 hours I am in the horrors of Auckland, the largest city in NZ .Millions of cars rushing at a 100mph fortunately no toll roads to complicate things and was able with the confusing road signs to drive through via motorway, carried on to Whangarei. For relatively small town horrendous sets of traffic lights just like Brisbane, waiting ages for them to change more traffic build up, began to hate Whangarei and headed for Takatata where the real diving took place .I would be right on the ... read more

We headed north on Highway 1 and stopped at Kaiwaka where I finally found Utopia, well an eco café fashioned from mud with a huge seagull guarding the entrance. After refreshments we set off again and after an hour or so we found ourselves in Whangerei, apparently one of the largest cities in the north. I personally would not refer to it as a city but more like a huge industrial estate with small high street, which I may add closes down at 3pm on a Saturday!! From Whangerei we came off the highway and drove the country road to Ngunguru. Here the road turned into an unsealed gravel road and we drove further and further into the bush where at times I wondered if my car was actually going to make the distance! I dropped ... read more

We set off early this morning for a 250km drive along the eastern coast up to a beautiful little town of 68,000 people called Whangarei, where we settled into a backpackers hostel for $48 called the Whangarei Falls backpackers. It's right next door to some really nice waterfalls apparently (hence the name) so we will endeavour to check them out tomorrow. We've just been out for a fantastic meal by the harbour which was well needed. As for now, we're pretty tired after last night's drinking and the longish drive today so off for an early night before the continued drive north towards the Bay Of Islands and Paihia where we will stay for a couple of days. So Night Night for now Mike... read more

Im in Whangarei at the moment where Ive been completing a diving course with this company called O2 Below and staying at their hostel they provide for us. I completed the course and I am now a qualified SSI Advanced diver with specialties in Deep Diving, Wreck Diving, Night Diving and Navigation Diving. Its been an amazing experience! Ive met some great people over here. The owners Dave and Nyree have been brill. Its like Im back at home, like getting my washimng washed for me, as well as if Im stuck on any thing they would gladly give a helping hand. They also arranged a diving trip to Waipoa (3 hr trip) just so I could visit the largest public Kauri tree in nz it was crazy! Also my Dive instructor 'Owen" is a sorted ... read more

After a good night sleep in our van we headed north to see what we came across. We found a place called Langs beach, that was an amzing place. It was about a mile long with fine sand, plenty of surf and blue skies. In the distance were mountainous islands that made the view incredible. We were on the beach for about 2 hours, exploring all the little coves, and only saw 5 other people whilst we were there. You'd never see such a nice beach with no people on in England!!!!! We continued to drive north and came across some caves (Wapui caves we think). We thought we would have a look and were very gald we did. The cave itself was huge and had a river flowing into it. Inside where lots of huge ... read more

Well I wish i had more time to hang around NZ. This place is Amazing. And i missing alot of sweet shit. But anyways went and stayed at a farm 20 min outside of Whangarei (pronounced fangarei sorta). But super nice spot. The farm I stayed at was alright. really nice veiw of the ocean and rolling hills. Tons of native trees and other crazy plants. For the first couple nights there were 4 german girls staying with me. They were good times for sure. We just drank wine every night. Alot of freaking wine. But I had a whole appartement to mself. Joy's ( the owner) son Austin and his friend Gia were there and we got on fine. We went drinking at a small micro-brewary it was sweet. The stuff tasted exactly like steam ... read more
