Hello again!! Got to Raglan early afternoon, did some emergency clothes washing in the sink and then started our surfing lesson at 3pm… by which point we had already been up 12 hours! The first hour we spent in the gym learning the technique, then we headed down to the beach, squeezed ourselves into wetsuits, straped our surf boards to our leg and then off we went! The guy told us that everyone who learns the technique perfectly in the gym somehow always manage to forget everything they’ve learnt as soon as they get in the water because they panic…we quickly proved him right but all in all we didn’t do too badly…I managed to catch the wave properly and surf all the way into shore quite a few times but it was so frustrating because ... read more

Spent the day with the Raglan Surfing School doing a private surf lesson. The waves were great and the instruction really boosted my confidence in the water. Raglan was beautiful black sand beaches that went on for miles.... read more

Raglan, wow. I think I could easily stay in this chill surf town for ages. I had planned to stay here two nights, but like everyother backpacker who comes through here, I extended my stay for another night. I was really tempted to stay a few more days, but the weekend approached and all the rooms filled up in the hostel. I can understand why because this was the best hostel I have stayed in for my whole trip. hmmm (thinking over what I just said) and yes, this does rank as my number one hostel! Not only was there a really relaxed, chill atmostphere, but they had free kayaks to use on the river which was right out the back door. They also had surf board hire and free transport to the acclaimed 'longest left ... read more

Justed wrapped up 5 days of surf camp in Raglan. Stayed up at the Karioi backpacker lodge which took me back to the frat house college days. Despite the sharing of bunk beds and bathroom facilities, it was actually a lot of fun. Met a lot of great people from all over the world, all of whom were traveling for months if not years on end. Makes my 5 weeks in NZ seem like no time at all! The lodge was way up in the woods where there was no cell phone reception and barely a radio signal. But the common area did have a nice LCD TV, pool table, fooz ball, and everyone brought a good supply of booze. I even made my first apple bong. There was also an industrial sized kitchen where we ... read more

Today we woke up early to head down to Auckland. we wanted to go for a ride on the glassbottom boat in Leigh. When we got there we must have taken the wrong road or something because we couldn't find it. so we turned around and headed back to Auckland. We stopped at Shakspear park just outside of Auckland and took some pictures. Most of the pictures are of on the way. I bring my camera sometimes and other times just the Video camera. When we got to Auckland there was no rooms left anywhere in the backpackers to we keep driving and got to Raglan around 9 30pm. Set up our tents and went to sleep.... read more

My last couple days on North Island (for now....) - I took the naked bus (NZ's cheap fares bus) to Raglan, via Hamilton. Nothing too interesting to tell as far as Hamilton is concerned, but Raglan is a great place, and NZ's top surfing spot. I stayed in possibly the best hostel yet, right by the waterfront, with spas, a sauna, electric blankets on the beds, and hammocks strung around the gardens. Mostly populated with American surfers, but that made a refreshing change from the hordes of German students who outnumber all other nationalities travelling around NZ by at least 3x. Spent most of my time walking along the enormous windswept Ngarunui beach. Then back to Auckland yet again, but only for a night, before heading for Christchurch, on South Island.... read more

After a good nights sleep, we cooked a big breakfast and sausage, beans, scrambled eggs and toast which went down exceedingly well especially after the few beers from the night before! As usual we were on the road by 10am and heading along the northern coast to Tauranga. We then headed inland towards Hamilton but it was raining so we only stopped briefly for money and fuel. Mark then realised he had left the precious lamb chops in Whakatane! Totally gutted, we pushed on toward the west coast. We stopped for lunch at the side of the road and made it to Raglan around 2.30pm. First stop was the butchers to replace our chops and then we checked into a scenic campsite. It was still raining but we played outside in the rain anyway. Once we ... read more

Our quest and mission after leaving Auckland was to travel South steadily, stopping along the way for regular wee stops, but making our way down to the South Island to get some adventure time in before the olds turn up. So with Stuart logic we headed West for the beaches of Phia and Muriwai, they are known for their surfing prowess and powerful undertows. Both the beaches were being battered with strong winds and storm surf, so it was just left to taking some time on the black volcanic sand and testing out the newly bought thermals. I don't know if you guys out there have tried on long fitting underwear before, perhaps the kind that your gran used to wear, (I know that Frank is very attached to his pair) but it makes you feel ... read more
