Hey all, just checking in so you know I'm still alive. Unfortunately, I have quite literally nothing to report at present. I've cleaned a garage, spruced up some fridges, mowed a lawn and worked in the office at the weekend and that's been pretty much my life since I got here. Saw a cool band though on Saturday and was surprised to learn the bass player was the drummers 60 year old mum. We had a laugh though when I chatted to the drummer afterwards and said how they played some songs my band did and he said "typical isn't it? you fly thousands of miles to the other side of the world just to hear the same songs..." Went for a bit of a run this evening (it was quite literally a "bit" of a ... read more

I have been quite lax in publishing lately, but thanks to Jeremy who fixed the problem I was having uploading photos for travelblog, I am back in business!!! It is now November, but in September Jeremy and his friend Dave visited us in New Zealand. Rand and I had moved in August to the North Island (more on that in a later blog) so this was one of our first explorations in the North. After picking Jeremy and Dave up at Auckland airport, we whisked them about 2 hours south to the Coromandel Peninsula for a few days. This was the first time Rand and I had been there as well. We were quite impressed with the beauty of the place; vibrant blues and greens and dramatic sea views abound!! A high road across the ... read more

I love Halloween. I was a little worried because the kiwis don't really celebrate Halloween but was actually very pleased with how the day went. I carved pumpkins with my Scottish roomie, Kat, who had NEVER done that before! The pumpkins in NZ in the spring are very small and white, not like pumpkins much at all, but they made pretty good Jack-O-Lanterns. After dinner Kat and I dressed up and went to the late night ((double feature!!!! Picture show! In the back row---f* the back row!!)) showing of Rocky Horror, complete with stage performance, encore Time Warp, and lots of men in lingerie. We went out for drinks afterwards and started talking with a couple of locals. One of the men, an old NZ farmer, was talking to me about politics and congratulated me on ... read more

10-25-09 - Sunday afternoon we departed Auckland heading south and then east to the very popular and beautiful Coromandel Peninsula. The Peninsula is due east of Auckland separated only by the Hauraki Gulf. The peninsula starts southeast of Auckland but juts out into the Pacific well north of Auckland. We’re hoping to see Auckland at night from the peninsula. This area we have been told has some of the finest and whitest sand beaches on the North Island. So we’re off to find out the truth and fiction of this well promoted vacation area. Hey we also got our first phone call on our cell phone. It was my friend Jeannie from Napier on the North Island where we’ll be staying for a few days. Jeannie’s warned us that they have some construction going on at ... read more

Monday 26th October - today I started the Kiwi Experience bus tour! Just before 9am the green Kiwi coach pulled into the Auckland youth hostel to pick up some of us. Everyone on the coach looked extremely knackered from non-stop flying and drinking! Today we were heading to Whitanga on the Coromandel Peninsula just off the north coast, and I couldn't wait to get out of Auckland and start seeing more of New Zealand. Along the way we all got to know each other. There's people from all over the world - Australia; Denmark; Switzerland; Israel and far too many Canadians! There's a fair few English people here as well. On our way out of Auckland our first stop was Mt Eden, one of New Zealand's dormant volcanoes. From the summit we got to see One ... read more

So I was very skeptical of Thames at first, I'm not gonna lie (actually "skeptical" is a little soft, I HATED Thames at first haha). However, things have picked up quite a bit! I got here a few days ago, and am committed to two weeks of work here. The work is really not bad- it's cleaning and making beds and such, which I'm actually quite good at if I do say so myself. I know it's a dumb thing to be good at, but it's nice to do something well, even if it is just making beds and washing dishes and vaccuuming. I was super bummed about being stuck here for Halloween, and THEN I found out that the local musical theatre company is putting on Rocky Horror on Halloween night! When you buy your ... read more

Between October 20 and October 24 I had embarked on another fun adventure with the stray bus. On October 20th, we headed over to the Coromandel peninsula and on to Heihei and Hot Water Beach. Hot Water Beach, as the name indicates, is a beach with hot springs under the sands. So we dug a hole where the hot water can form a manmade pool and we laid in it. Well, we tried to anyhow. It was so hot, that we kept stepping out of it. I had tried to put my feet in for a few seconds, but had quickly taken them out. They were as red as a tomato! Apparently, what you’re supposed to do is take a dip in to the cold beach water and then warm up in the hot springs, but ... read more

Coromandel Peninsula -- Mercury Bay Driving Out We headed out Tuesday morning in our brand spanking new (okay old and used up) car. We drove from Auckland to the Coramandel Region, and went along the Coastal Route (crazy windy) from Thames to Coromandel Town. We stopped at a few spots to take in the view and take a breath. The road did seem like it was on top of the ocean a lot of the time. The scenery along the drive was just amazing and we stopped at a few beaches to walk in the sand. The east coast beaches have a lot of white sand and are amazing. We hopped on one just as it quit raining and once again had an amazing beach all to ourselves for at least fifteen minutes. Sept, 13 - Sept, 27 Hiring a campervan and hitting the open road is kind of obligatory when in New Zealand so we found the cheapest possible deal ($30 a day) and picked up a bright orange converted people carrier that is now known as a Spaceship called Ray. We took Ray to a town called Hahei from there we would explore the Coromandel Peninsula (the top right part of the north island). We parked up at a site on a farm and ended up getting loads of bites on our legs. We hoped this was from insects in the long grass and nothing living in the grimy carpet of the van, or heaven forbid the bedding! Unfortunately we had a bit of a mishap when we set off to the Coromandel and ended up trapped ... read more

Vera and I made some breakfast and then packed up and piled all our stuff into the car and then drove over to the mall where the stray bus would pick us up again. I bought a book and sat and read while Vera took the car back. The bus finally came and we threw our stuff on and found seats. The bus was quite full. We drove to the hot water beach first. This beach lies on a fault line that heats the water under the sand. Basically you dig holes in the sand and make like a little hot tub for yourself. But some of the water is too hot, it will burn you. As the waves come in from the ocean it cools the water down so you can sit in them. It’s ... read more
