Kia Ora! Right let's get you horrible lot up to speed shall we? So, when I left you last I was feeling all poetic and inspired, I can imagine how that may have frightened some of you, so you can take comfort in the fact I've been all grumpy and miserable again this week, much more like myself. So I left Wellington at stupid o clock in the morning (which covers anytime before 11am) and took a big long coach ride to Napier. I very nearly missed the bus but luckily there was a nice long queue to board which kept it there a while longer. After handing my luggage to the (even grumpier than me) driver I grabbed a seat and began several hours of looking out the window at stuff and places I hadn't ... read more

Kia Ora! Well, today is the exact 6 month mark of landing in Aotearoa and what a ride it's been, but now it appears to be winding down. I distinctly remember at Christmas my rather drunken friend Andrew going on some big ramble about life, the universe and everything, but there was one bit that stuck out and moved me. For all his Yankee idiocy he managed to rather profoundly state that "we are all here searching for something....none of us know what it is, but when we find it we'll know." That's been at the back of my mind for a little over 4 months now and you know what? I think I've found my something. To put it simply it's the realisation that I can do whatever I want. Before I'd often think of ... read more

Kia Ora! I am currently back in the allegedly more English than England Christchurch for the time being after doing a whistle stop tour of the Southern reaches of the South Island. It was pretty good fun, but it was over far too quickly. I'll try and recap for you here thought, assuming anyone is still reading of course.... You may recall that I wasn't 100% sure what to do next at the end of my previous blog, but I decided to bite the bullet and myself and one of the Chef's from Haast went halves on renting a Campervan for 6 days to drive around and see as much as possible. Imagine my delight at going to pick it up and seeing the sides of the van adorned with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - a ... read more

Well, what a not very interesting couple of months it's been.... So when I was in England saying "I'll look for a job, I'm not looking for a career so I don't care if I just clean toilets...." I never expected to clean quite so many of them. It's damn near all I've done since December! So what's been going on over here? Well after everyone did their final shifts over the weekend we had the party to end all parties (one guy was still hungover 2 days later) before finally leaving en masse on Monday to new adventures and currently myself and 2 of the Chefs are cruising together, which works out very well for me as one of them has a car. So on Monday we headed down to Queenstown to catch up with ... read more

OK so now I have a cushty laptop in my grubby mits, here's the down-lo on the week that was.... The problem with where I work and the fact that I don't have a car is that it takes me 2 days to get to the airport. No really, try and imagine that for a moment. We're talking about 4 days just to get to the airport and back home.... Anyway, the first days travel was pretty good, my boss was going to Queenstown and so I got a lift with him for the 3 hour drive, which also meant I got to get a cheeky glimpse at Queenstown before the ski season kicks in, the only problem was that we'd left in the afternoon and with the desire to blog upon arrival I didn't get ... read more

I am now safely back on the South Island, but you'll have to wait for the full report from the land where you can hear, you can hear the thunder because the computers here are just too slow for me to blog with photos and all without getting a rage on. Hopefully I can use and abuse one of the chefs laptops in the next day or so and then you can continue your immense jealousy at the minimum wage earning, friend and family-less vagabond existence I currently lead.... read more

Well hello, I am alive and well fear not. You may recall I was headed for a hotel so I could get involved in some gainful employment and the last few weeks have been...interesting. On the way into Haast I had to cross a river (by that I mean the bus went over a bridge) and there was a sign saying "Gates of Haast", well my first thought was how Lord of the Rings that sounded and my second thought was a clever play on words by way of "Gates of Hell". 3 weeks later I realise how accurate of me that was. Seriously, this job stinks. Well actually I've got a bit more used to it now and have a good laugh in the evening with a couple of the guys here so it's bearable ... read more

Hey team, just wanted to share a few pictures with you as I'm unexpectedly holed up in Wanaka for the night. I think I may have to introduce NZ to the concept of trains as a medium of public transport... Anyway, South Island is beautiful - don't know if I already mentioned but decided to give the ferry crossing from north to south ago and it was like sailing through the countryside. Driving down the island was much the same. Only with more mountains. Anywho, enjoy the photos.... read more

Yesterday I had the best day ever. Every year the small town of Blenheim holds the Blues, Brews & BBQs Festival, whereby 2 music stages are put up in the park and then surrounded by beer tents from all over the country (and Carlsberg - result!) and a few food stalls too. As the name suggests most of the bands play blues, but the headlining band were just churning out quality rock covers. Anyway I was working on one of the beer stands, which happened to be next to the stage - a prime spot I feel and what an awesome day. We could drink behind the bar, we were swapping beers for steak sandwiches with next door, I got given some vouchers to use at other stands when I went for a mid-afternoon wander, then ... read more

Kia-Ora once again. Feels good to be walking on concrete again but I don't think I'll ever look at a festival the same way again - I mean that in a good way. It was truly fascinating to see an empty field become a centre of great vibes, great times and an overwhelming feeling of peace. I've attached some photos so you can see the progression from green grass to stalls and people as I saw it, but what of the festival itself? Well it was a very quiet and intimate affair. They claimed 10,000 last year, but I doubt that - this year there couldn't have been more than 3,000 pass through. SAturday was blazing hot and full of people, but Sunday was rather cloudy and empty. I think the main stage headliners played to ... read more
