Friday January 8 - Today it rained all day. All day. A shame, because it was our last real day. We planned to spend it in the antique shops in Paeroa and then in Tauranga, the city where we would go back to tonight (to the B&B). We went to the library to internet and I bought a children's book they were selling with great pictures (for 20 cents!). We skipped the antique shops due to the weather. Then we had to drive back through the gorge to get to Tauranga. But the GPS started to work again, so that was good. In town, we found some free parking and ate lunch in our van. Then the rain lessened and we went to art gallery in town. When we were done there, it was really raining, ... read more

Thursday December 24 – Today we drove a little further east in the Bay of Plenty, to Whakatane. The Wh is one letter in Mauri (spoken by the indigenous Mauri people in NZ) and sounds like the F in English. So it sounds like Fa-ka-ta-nay. We checked out the beach there and then drive a few more miles to Ohope beach. It was cold and cloudy – not quite the summer weather we had envisioned – but still beautiful. We stopped to buy some cold medicine and bought sausages for lunch that were being sold outside a store we were at.... read more

Traveled down to Opotiki from Glenfield just outside of Auckland, it was a 5 hour drive down, the secenery is the best and the most diverse you will ever see. Stopping at Tina's brothers house in Opotiki, had a pot luck dinner in true Mori style. ... read more

Its been a mixed bag with the weather today. Lovely sunshine, cloudy periods and the odd rain squall. So coats on, waterproof camera out and an attitude that we wont melt:). After leaving Bowentown we headed down to Waihi beach for a coffee then off to Waihi town to visit the Martha Mine. Walked the 4km Pit Rim Walkway. Great walk around the rim of the mine. It is currently not working as a major slip has closed it since Easter weekend. Information boards around the walkway made for some interesting facts. We were going to take a shovel but for every tonne of rock they get 3 teaspoons of gold (Lance isn't that good on a shovel). They also had red poppies on the fence around the town side of the mine. Each poppy was ... read more

The excitement of a new day was enough to not want us to lay in bed too long. We headed off to Te Puna Quarry park (off SH2, north of Tauranga). What an awesome spot. The park is a garden and sculpture oasis in an abandoned quarry, run by local residents and society's. Breath-taking views across to Tauranga and Mt Maunganui. A few interesting sculptures. Lance ditched me for a mosaic lady that he thought was more compliant (She had no sense of humour I thought!). As usual I was left to mind the dog. Caught up with family in Katikati then headed to Anzac Bay (Bowentown) for the night. View from our room tonight was pretty good:)... read more

Well we are finally on our way. A bit of a late start leaving Rotorua has seen us travel a short distance to Tauranga to park up for the night at the Tauranga Sulphur point marina. Its been a hectic day finalising paperwork, loading campervan, selling Jenna's car (daughter). Yep the golden girl got Mums car by default as an upgrade. Glad I'm not her when her brothers catch up with her next. (According to the boys it was soooo much tougher in their day). Red wine and rum is flowing in celebration. Will catch you all tomorrow:)... read more
