Dog sitting in Papamoa
Published: May 23rd 2011Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Plenty » Mount MaunganuiWe stayed the night with Steve, Liz and the boys the night before they left for the UK. It gave us the chance to meet Jet before they left for the other side of the world! Its really strange being in a house again after over 2 months living in a camper van - and it’s a huge house too!! Jet is very cute and loves to be fussed so we are going to have our work cut out for us over the next four weeks. Luckily the sun has come out again so the daily walks on the beach with Jet have been lovely. After a few days of doing nothing much but finding our way to the shops, doing some washing and reacquainting ourselves with the square box known as the TV, we headed ... read more

Journal day 69 - Mount Maunganui.
Published: April 30th 2011Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Plenty » Mount MaunganuiUp early to drive from Hot water beach campsite to mount Maunganui through Tairua and Whangamata. Whangamata- another chilled out surf town. Mount Maunganui The Mount Maunganui that the town is named after is a large bump of a hill that dominates the landscape and looks over the long stretches of beach that seem to provide endless surfspots. Perfect clean surf. Dying to get out but ribs not ready just yet! Spent the day walking around the beaches and town. Perfect weather and lots of surfers out. Saw a group of people at the end of the beach closest to the Mount. Turned out it was a wedding ceremony under a simple little canopy. Stood and watched it and then went back to the van to Cook my dinner.Spent the rest of the evening just watching ... read more
We stayed at Sally and Ian's place for the weekend. What a nice relaxing time we had with plenty of walking, talking and eating! We saw the land where Sally and Ian's new home is being built - what fantastic views! Then we visit Katikati which is their nearest town - we had coffee here. We visited Bethlehem on Sunday and walked through the markets and more coffee. We walked to the ferry at Omokoroa and watched the fish being caught off the jetty.... read more
Heading North
Published: April 4th 2011Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Plenty » Mount MaunganuiMarch 24 Lake Tekapo, Today has been primarily a travel day. We left Dunedin around 8 this morning and arrived here in Lake Tekapo in the late afternoon. We did make one interesting stop on the way here to see the Moeraki Boulders. These are huge spherical boulders sitting on the edge of the ocean. They are created from a combination of sandstone and lichen pressed together over the eons. The way they are scattered along the shore looks like the giants were bowling and just left their balls where they stopped rolling. The country side through to here is stunning with the mountains and glacier blue rivers running through the landscape. There are a number of dams that create lakes that add to the local colour schemes. Lake Tekapo itself is equally pretty. We stayed ... read more

Published: March 29th 2011Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Plenty » TaurangaFine day. Head still troublesome. Up early. After breakfast, spent ¾ of an hour in catching a horse to put in the cart. Walked the cart into Tauranga – were over 2 hours doing it. The scenery on the way is wild and grand and in some places, pretty. A good deal of cultivation going on round about. After dinner, sent a telegram to Mrs Courtayne to tell her that I should return on Thursday evening. Lay down nearly all afternoon – slight headache and rheumatism. After tea went to the Mechanics Institute and looked at the papers and some of the …… magazines. Met two men there whom I saw at the Hot Springs. ... read more

B was harrowing all day – walked up and down with him for some time. Lay down most of the afternoon – head bad, worse in the evening. Irregularity of meal times seems to be one of the causes for my headaches.... read more

Published: March 25th 2011Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Plenty » TaurangaFine day. The luxury of roughing it; to wash out of doors; having to go to the spring for the water first of all. Cutting wood, which consists of tea tree etc., then lighting the fire and cooking the meal and sitting down to it in trousers and Crimean shirts and then washing the things up afterwards. It's not bad fun at first but I think a cook will be appreciated soon. In the morning went for a walk about the place. The house is very prettily situated having a fine view of Tauranga bay being only as the crow flies, about a mile from it. It is very hilly about, there being no flat land to speak of. B's farm is some 400 acres – 200 being under cultivation, some 50 acres being bought under ... read more

Published: March 25th 2011Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Plenty » TaurangaHad to get up and light the fire and cook the breakfast and wash up afterwards, each one of us helping and I did part of the cooking. Walked down to the river where we were to meet another man and go for a sail. We had to cross a swamp going by a short cut to get there. It was wet walking and at one place, the water came up to one's waist so B took off his unmentionables and carried us over on his back. We borrowed the boat and went up river, taking a couple of guns with us. It was a sailing boat but there was hardly any wind so we had to use the oars. We went some 3 miles up the river till we came to a creek up which ... read more
