(TT) ... read more

Our real first day of our holiday and what a day it was! It started this morning with a solid breakfast in Auckland and finished with a great dinner in Paihia in the Bay of Islands about 250 km north of Auckland. We traveled the distance by car, that we rented. Driving in New Zealand is on the wrong side of the road, i.e. left, which initially brings a lot of complications. Different driving functions are on the opposite side of the steering wheel, which has very clean windows as a result, because every time you think you indicate direction, the wiperblades come on and when you think you turned the lights on, after some time, you come to the conclussion that the wiperblades on the rear window is on. The landscape here is unbelievable beautiful, ... read more

Left Whangerei this morning heading north about an hour to the start of the Bay of Islands; specifically Paihia, a small resort town and the gateway to the various activities of the North. Spent the morning just strolling the small town centre and viewing the harbour and small beaches. A bustling place full of tourists. In the afternoon I headed to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, the most important historical location in New Zealand as in 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between England and the Maori of New Zealand. Like most such treaties, it is still a work in progress. There is a lovely museum on the grounds as well as a regular tour of the grounds culminating in a live performance at the carved meeting house. On the grounds is the largest wooden war ... read more

C: We headed north from Auckland on Saturday morning. Our first stop was Puhoi where we had been recommended a cheese factory and shop/cafe to visit. It was a beautiful setting and there was some great cheese which seduced Roger into buying an overly expensive platter for brunch! Oh well. The cheese was good and the cheese was nice. After having gorged ourselves on cheese we drove to the coast and the strangely named Goat Island marine reserve. It's supposed to be a great place for snorkelling but the chilly wind and overcrowded black sand beach put us off a bit. We headed on and found a stunning stretch of white sandy beach at Pakiri, we were soon to realise this was the first of many, and were glad we did. After the obligatory British paddling ... read more

Geo: -35.1813, 174.199Up in time today to see the ship pull into the bay as the day dawned, we were charmed to see a pod of dolphins swimming along keeping pace with the ship. There were at least six of them, but I imagine there were more. At one point we saw four jumping at the same time followed by two more a few yards behind them. They entertained us and some folks on the Promenade Deck below us for quite a while. As we slowed more and the dolphins neared a rocky area in their path, I lost sight of any of them. This was the best dolphin sighting we have had on this trip, and one of the best we've ever had. A lot of waiting was involved in the shore excursion to Waitangi ... read more

We've had a great past few days in the Bay of Islands sadly the weather hasn't really been on our side, its been warm, yes, with a few sunny spells but it's mainly drizzling and cloudy. One bonus is that it's given Rich the chance to recover from his burns ?? ? However, we've been in NZ a week now and I'm still struggling to see any signs of a tanline. (white girl problems) I can dream.. Starting the morning on Saturday (6th Feb) with a coffee on the waterfront in Paihia at a place called Upperdeck, great views of the bays and top class coffee ?? We booked ourselves onto a Discover the Bays cruise for the afternoon. It was SO worthwhile! I would highly recommend. Even with the less than perfect weather conditions it ... read more

First night in the campervan complete with both of us alive and well (Rich took control of the cooking and rustled us up a beef stirfry so the odds of food poisoning were extremely low) we drove up to the Northern most part of New Zealand, Cape Rienga. Having been there previously I knew that Cape Rienga was absolutely stunning with its picturesque scenery, beautiful walks, coastline and a view of the meeting point of the Tasman and Atlantic sea that's amazing... incidentally we saw none of this. The weather was absolutely horrific! You couldn't even see 10m in front of you the cloud was that low. At 230m above sea level it was genuinely like looking out of an airplane window mid flight, there was absolutely nothing to see but pure white. Plus the nonstop ... read more

Thursday December 31 – We woke up to a beautiful beach sunrise and then drove to the Goat Island Marine Reserve. It has amazing snorkeling, but we were there too early to even rent equipment, so we walked around for a while and then carried on north. We stopped at a couple more places as we drove and then in Paihia to get the ferry to Russell in the Bay of Islands. The weather was not great and we were not really impressed with Russell. The best part was that Charles Darwin had been there before. Once we took the ferry back to Paihai, we went to the info site for help finding a place to sleep. It’s really high season at this time and camping is often already booked out. Plus, it is New Year’s ... read more

Geo: -35.2616, 174.122Poor planning - that's why we ended up in a small town like Kerikeri on New Year's Eve, because some basic research led us to plan an additional day in the area, for some wine tasting around the town of Russell. Had it not been for Russell, we would've made our way down to Auckland one day earlier, which surely would have a fairly substantial celebration to ring in the New Year. The plan was good in theory, but in reality, it wasn't the best choice - while Russell does have a couple of decent wineries, there really isn't much wine tourism compared to NZ's more famous wine regions. Russell really isn't a place to plan a full day's worth of wine tasting - only an hour or two, at most, was enough for ... read more
