We got here at lunch time yesterday and were met at the airport by Graeme's cousin Kenny. We went out for lunch, then Kenny took us to our hostel. We spent the afternoon getting our bearings, buying a sim card for the mobile, then Graeme decided to ring some of his Kiwi friends. Just by luck, Scotty happened to be in the area, so we met him and his girlfriend Crystal for a beer and the boys were able to catch up. In the evening, we went out for dinner (lovely Thai) with Kenny and his boyfriend Luke, and Lindsay and David, (Lindsay is another cousin of Kenny's) who are here from the UK, and are working in Auckland. A good night was had by all! We ended it in a weird Japanese Karaoke bar - ... read more

There exists a big rivalry between Australia - New Zealand, Auckland and Wellington. In my opinion Australia wins by a country mile and Wellington kicks Aucklands big arse in all respects. What is the nicest thing that i can think of when describing Auckland? Its a dull characterless city, under the impression that it rivals Sydney, No Chance!!. For me its just a 'pass through' destination nothing more. The sweet is'nt as sweet without the sour so as there is so much beauty and stunning scenery in this part of the world i suppose it needs contrasting with dullness in order for people to appreciate the gorgeous places that grace these islands, so in that respect i suppose Auckland has its uses (as well as to provide a home to all the bad-arse boyracers in Nz). ... read more

Hiya folks, I arrived in Auckland around lunchtime and not feeling too tired despite only having an hours sleep between Dubai and Auckland. The journey was in three parts Dubai --- Singapore --- Brisbane --- Auckland. The first two flights were about 7hrs or so. Quite a cool part of the flight was getting to stay on the plane in Singapore while the plane was refueled and passangers got on and off. The cleaners came onboard and gave the plane a not so thorough going over. Quite a serious point was put across the flight intercom as we arrived in Singapore, we were reminded that drug smugglers could be punished using the death penalty, that gave me quite a shiver even although I would never dream of doing that, but you do hear stories of 'innocent' ... read more

New Zealand is famous for its stunnign scenery and National Parks where there are great walks to hike through from Milford Sound's wliderness and lakes to Abel Tasman's coastline of turqouise-blue bays and beaches. These great walks cover anywhere from 40K to 150K and take several days to complete. I got the chance to see a bit of the Abel Tasman and Milford Sound area but no one told me about the Great Walks of the Lord of the Rings. My journey started in Wellington on a dreary day with winds 70 mph. There were guided tours that covered the LOR areas I visited but I figured it would be easy to access and walk to these locations myself...little did I know what I was getting myself into!? The city of Wellington is home to LOR ... read more

Today is, umm, hmmm, i think it's wednesday 30th, or it could still be tuesday, then again it could be thursday, pheweee, that 20+ hour flight really buggered up our body clocks. We arrived in Auckland at 11am on Tuesday and we had had about 5 hours sleep over the 2 days of travel as neither of us can sleep on a plane, so we were a bit messed up to say the least! We arrived at our temporary hostel called The Fat Camel in downtown Auckland, it's in a great location, pretty much easy access to everything Auckland has to offer, the staff are really friendly and helpful and the place is pretty much empty as it is winter here, so we have all the puta's for internet access and the big screen tv to ... read more

Auckland is not typical of New Zealand. It's vast sprawl is punctuated by a comparatively small area of high rise development but this resplendent hub of urban activity could be seen, depending on your point of view, as the jewel in the North Islands crown. The hosting of the America's Cup for two consecutive tournaments has transformed the inner city to a suave playground for the wealthy, like Monaco or some other insular European hangout. At night they garishly illuminate Aucklands 328 metre tall Skytower which looms over proceedings like a giant syringe. Apparently they change the colour sometimes. When I was there it was mauve. Driving south you are suddenly faced with a landscape of vicarious lassitude. No character at all, it could be England on a bad day.The towns of Rotorua and Taupo for ... read more

I arrived in Auckland. I might have well arrived home, in the airport even before the baggage claim a lovely lady behind a stand offers you a free cup of tea or coffee. First thing in the morning after a long nights flight this is just what is needed. So I wandered through immigration and baggage reclaim sloshing my near scolding tea across my hands, baggage and pristine clean floor. I caught a bus down town to the Auckland Central Backpackers. Met a couple from Cardiff/Isle of Wight as I got off the bus they were on their way to the ACB as well. The ACB is the largest and most commercial hostel I have ever seen, over 600 beds, a huge Internet cafe and a kitchen that is a strange cross between a busy restaurant ... read more

Sky diving over a lake in NZ If you are wondering why there is a picture on the way down of my bare feet over the lake....it is because I was wearing flip flops at the time and the guys told me that I couldn't jump with them as they would fall off (obviously). Despite the sun my feet were frozen by the time we landed.... read more
