BULLA, Sorry for my tardiness on the blog...but here is a bit of an update on life in FIJI! Zara turned 3 recently and we decided to celebrate with a trip away - which is very easy to do when you live in FIJI. Local rates here are fantastic and I intend to take full advantage during out time here. Mum is here at the moment and we just had a few nights away at Natadola (intercontinental). Ok - so this is my favorite place so far in FIJI.... http://www.toberua.com/ - this is what FIJi is all about. From what all the locals and expats who have been here a while tell me that you need to go out to the islands to experience the "real fiji"...this was my first island trip and i'm sold. When we were kids, the last day of school was the best day ever. It meant summer. It meant long days playing outside with our friends and staying up late. It was everything we waited for during the school year. Today was my last day at the kindie and it was so bittersweet. All good things in life come to an end and as this did today, I was so happy to have been a part of it. Sometimes in life we make a decision to do something and think that the outcome could be good but this was more than I could have ever expected. The last three days has been filled with the children coming up to me and asking more questions about where I'm going, when I'm leaving and giving me gifts. I ... read more

Well, after my last entry, I decided to take a walk to the Hot Bread Company where I heard they sold these sausage roll pastry things. O...M...G!!! Yeah, they were so good I had two! Thank god I did not discover these earlier in my trip! To explain, its a lamb sausage in a croissant like pastry. Or, a little slice of heaven in a roll! I've had several since my discovery... Thursday night I went home with Teacher Shavin to her home and had dinner. It was SOOOO good! I met her 14 yr old son and played with her 4 yr old daughter, Crystal. She's also in the kindy with us, so I see her every day, but all day at school she was talking about me going to her house. Some of the ... read more

This week in school has been hilarious! The topic of the week is road safety. Overall, its been a lot of when to cross the street, why you should hold someone's hand, why you should wear a seat belt in the car (they only teach that you should wear one in the front seat). Then, how to behave on the bus. This might be my favorite part...no sticking your head and arms out the window. I mean, as a kid, I'd be so tempted to do it. The windows are huge and so inviting of mischief! I quickly realize this is a subject I'm not qualified to teach. Not only did I love being a dare devil as a kid (no triple dog daring needed) but the rules of the road here are backwards to me. ... read more

So on Friday night, my host family turned on the TV to watch the rugby league that is regional teams from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. It's official...I'm an addict! I was so into the game and I didn't even know which team was which! Now I want to learn how to play - don't worry mom, I won't do that while I'm traveling :-) On Saturday I woke up leisurely....well as leisurely as I could with the roaster. I really don't like that bird! I decided to spend the day in Suva seeing the sites that the city had to offer. I took the mini-bus into the city and at first tried to find a regular bus to take me across town to the museum. It was raining and I wasn't in the mood ... read more

I started back at school this week on Tuesday. The kids were very rowdy. I think it was the long weekend and the excitement of seeing their friends again. I've really gotten into the classroom and so enjoy going everyday. I walk across the bridge with a smile on my face and am welcomed by children and parents as I enter the school grounds. Its wonderful! I talked to the teacher and on Wednesday, I was able to teach a new song to the kids. Its something I learned back in high school and its called Singing in the Rain. I taught it to my cousins years ago and they loved it too so I figured the kids would here as well. Its an easy song to sing and you use different body parts, so it ... read more

My host father and I were talking about our families and he asked if I wanted to see the video of his youngest daughters wedding. Of course, I said yes! Its a two day affair with their extended family coming from several countries including Australia, Canada and the US. There are gifts presented and lots of music and dancing. There are special ceremonies that just involve the husband to be and the bride's father. Then special ceremonies just for the bride to be. It was all so interesting. I loved watching how involved each member of the family and extended family are involved. The wedding itself was beautiful. The bride looked amazing! She was in this beautiful red dress trimmed with jewels and gold decoration. They she had on this cool jewelry and make-up that included ... read more

Well, I've made a break through. A girl in the afternoon school session that has spent the last two days doing nothing by hissing at me said hello to me today with a big cheerie smile. Ah, nothing like bribing kids with stickers! No more spiders to report. Thank god. I'm beginning to settle in with the roaster. Pradeep is joking that he's going to make a good dinner out of him. I really hope I'm not at home if this goes down! Last night at the house was fun. I was spending time with Preneel and their neighbors two children that are 16 and 18. They were asking me if I spoke other languages. I said, not really but that I learn basic words in the language for all of the places I've traveled. So, ... read more

Hello all, The funniness continues... So when I left the internet shop yesterday, I got onto the public bus to go home. Oh my...so funny! The bus is basic...really basic! The seats, not so much cushion. The windows...um, there are none. That's right. Why have windows and AC when you have the south pacific wind! Once moving, its great, but while I waited the 15 minutes for the bus to leave the main station (and by station, just a parking lot), I'm pretty sure I sweat at least half my body weight. Here is one thing I have already accepted...I'm going to smell for the next month. There's no way around it. No place has AC. The sun is unbelievably hot, ceiling fans are limited and its humid. And, as if this was not enough to ... read more
