Monday 4th December I had managed to contact my friend Lisa who lives in Dunsborough and arrange to meet up for a chat and diner, we have not seen her for over a year so it will be good to catch up. With a short two hour trip to Yallingup we had a lazy start to the day, getting up latish and relaxing. A long walk on the beach with Tippy was a treat, managed to take my camera and get some great shots of the clouds and the ocean, as well as Tippy and G. Because the sun is not burning hot and there are lots of clouds around the shots on the beach are so much more interesting, enjoyed playing with the colors, will try with my bigger lens next time. Easy drive to ... read more

We have decided to slow down the pace of things with our trips so planned a short drive to get us on the road, only as far as Preston Beach. Far enough to be clear of Perth but not too far to need us to get moving early or to hurry along. Finally left Bakers around 10ish all loaded and ready to go. We were very surprised at the traffic which was heavy until well after Mandurah turn off, road works on the north bound carriageway had the other direction a car park, must remember not to come back this way. Stopped off at the services to water the dog and the adults, still very busy I suppose it is Sunday. Uneventful trip down the highway to Preston Beach. We missed the turn off into the ... read more

As explained in my last post, I had decided to head back onto the Bibbulmun Track and complete another sectional hike. When I had returned from Perth late in 2022, I found that my wife required a knee operation. When she recovered from this, I booked a flight in April 2023 to Perth and back onto the track. Well in February 2023, I ended up in hospital and following an operation in April and subsequent injections into my neck to resolve shoulder pain, I headed back to Perth in late September 2023. I decided to back fill sections of the track which I had missed and not confident in my fitness, planned to head to Collie and walk South to North, to Dwellingup and then go further North and exit the track at Sullivans Rock car ... read more

After getting back to Australia from Europe, I set my sights on trekking the Bibbulmun Track in Western Australia. The track is one of thr world's long distance walking trails, stretching from Kalamumda in the Perth Hills, to Albany on the West Australian south coast, a distance of just over 1,000kms. It would take me approximately two months to complete an End to End, carrying a full pack including all food. There are 9 sections to the track and you can re stock with food at track towns along the way or organise for food drops if you are able to. So alot of planning was needed, but with Covid, International and State Border closures, coupled with a foot operation, it meant I was unable to get to Perth in West Australia till September 2022. I ... read more

Spring tide in Broome laps by the shore at High Tide and one has to walk about 300 metres to greet the low tide...only Nova Scotia has larger tidal flows. What will happen if we dip our toes in? Dinosaur tracks across the bay from Roebuck Beach...some of the largest bird migrations on the planet...art and culture of the World's oldest living civilisation...the First Nations indigenous people dreaming stories for over 60,000 years. The savage history following the coming of the white man...the clash of cultures...dispossession, disconnect, disadvantage to the aboriginal first inhabitants that has ensured...their human blight that many non-indigenous seek to avoid or forget. Red rocks millions of years old...red & orange tracks into the remote...but on a map...the Kimberley is only a speck on this sunburnt country I am blessed to call home. ... read more

There's often a pivotal moment when a decision is made to travel to an exotic locale. For some it is prefaced by procrastination...others a whim...a spur of the moment idea acted upon...others gotta tick a bucket list. From a moment of vulnerability from a tennis match I never would have thought. Ours are usually spur of the moment..."I can do that" leading Denise and I on our David Hoo Tours in China ("your travel experts with minimal experience but major optimism"...that's me folks). A shock "Gooday" in an icy Pingyao walled city one Winter when all I was thinking was "How did I get us into this one?"...thus meeting Mike & Ros with whom we travelled to Mali & Ethiopia years later. An offer over a dinner table to drive me to a carved mountain in ... read more

Only 100klm from Wyndham to Kununurra so an easy day. We stayed at the Lake Kununurra Caravan Park which is a lovely spot with waterfront views. We were kind of thinking Kununurra would be a little more civilised as we had visited here nearly 20 years ago. After booking in and getting settled we had a text from management at the caravan park telling us to lock doors on the van at night, do not leave keys or anything inside your van where someone could see and easily grab them if they got into your van, also to make sure all your belongings are locked up! Geez do we feel safe.....yeeessss but a little uneasy! Then on the second day went to buy beer at the local Thirsty Camel to be told that they could not ... read more

From Derby to Wyndham is approximately 920klm so decided to take it easy over three days so that we can stop along the way. First stop was Fitzroy Crossing for fuel only and what a depressing town this is....aboriginal people sitting under trees everywhere, begging outside the roadhouse, the roadhouse itself had no windows but if they did they were boarded up, dirty toilets at roadhouse....not a nice place! We fuelled up and got the hell out of there! The 2 way road crossing of the Fitzroy River just opened again this week after being washed away AGAIN....it was all easy and had no trouble getting through. Then onto Ngumban Cliff Rest area, a free campground with toilets, rubbish facility and dump point, great spot perched up on the cliff, great for the sunset. Had happy ... read more

Got away from Willare Bridge Roadhouse around 10am and limped along to Derby getting in about 10.45 and fortunately our site was vacant so got setup nice and early. We were told along the way that Derby wasn't much but after a few days here and you kind of pick the scab off, its an interesting sort of place, except for the daytime black mozzies who are rampant, are quick, bite lots but we have slathered ourselves once again with the Good Riddance and it keeps them at bay. We found it friendly and quite an historic town perched at the edge of the King Sound near the mouth of the mighty Fitzroy River. The beautiful quirky Boab trees we learn that the seed has floated across the ocean from Madagascar which is very interesting that ... read more

After two days on the lagoon between Marble Bar and Port Hedland, we headed off to stay in the G'Day Park in Port Hedland for a few days. Our first stop was the car/van wash and it took John a good half hour to get the dust off everything and it seems to be still oozing out of every crevice! Arrived at the caravan park and got all set up and looked across and down one and there were a couple we met at the Marble Bar Races....Toni and Mick..... we were so glad to meet up and we had a lovely time with them as our neighbors....happy hour 4pm each day for the 5 days! Port Hedland is a very industrial town everything is red, house roofs, roads, shops! A very spread out town, like ... read more
