Friday 28th April Stop, clean and wash day today, feels strange doing normal things again. Washing machines are large and I managed to do all the wash in one for $5 not bad, out on the line in a lovely breeze. Graeme got the vac out and we got rid of all the stones and crap from the floor, looking good again. Graeme installed the in-line filter for the water coming in that we bought yesterday, it will help preserve the pipes and the tanks on the van, but I will still not be using the water for tea or drinking, it is good for washing dishes and hands and flushing the toilet. Headed out for lunch to the Mar e Sol a small restaurant that sits out on the spit in the industrial are near ... read more

27th April route Hamelin Pool, Wooramel Roadhouse, Carnarvon Big4 Plantation Caravan Park $43 per night ($50 Big4 Membership) Rating by us 6/10 Good large trees for shade and decent size bays, great facilities 27th April to 7th May Carnarvon Mileage 6398 travelled 227kms Thursday 27th April A driving day today after a good night’s rest, we had little to pack having left the van hooked up to the car, so it was breakfast and hit the road. I had to stop and photograph the road we were driving on; this is typical Australian to me and was one of the first things I noticed when I travelled here in 1991. The road is dead straight and disappears over the horizon, red dirt with low shrubs on either side of the narrow strip of tarmac. We are ... read more

26th April route Kalbarri, Billabong Roadhouse, Hamelin Pool Hamelin Pool Caravan Park $45 per night Rating by us 3/10 Very run down, no shade, dirt floors, poor facilities 26th Apr Hamelin Pool Mileage 6171 travelled 349kms Wednesday 26th April Well, the locals were right about the weather it rained heavily during the night and was still showering this morning, hopefully driving north will take us out of it, here's hoping. Chatting with a couple from Perth and there six-year-old "miniature" staffie called Maggie I think she must be a cross as she is half the size of Tippy. They did the normal rough stuff that staffies do and his wife was not impressed, he was OK and said that's what staffies do, but I had to take Tippy away as she was not happy, shame. Tuesday 25th April Well, the locals were half right, the weather was crappy first thing but brighten up as the day went along. Slow start finally beginning to slow down a bit, well maybe Hehe. The area is noticeably quiet with not much commercialisation which is great, one general store, a fire brigade, the caravan park and not much else. It looks like the place is almost 100% tourism with fishing and the Pink Lake been the major attractions, it is also only 70kms to Kalbarri National Park and cheaper than staying in Kalbarri. The beach is protected by a reef which is only about 500m offshore. The boats use a safe passage to the ocean but stay anchored in the shelter of the reef at night. The water is crystal clear and according to a ... read more

Graeme did all the outside stuff whilst I tackled inside, poor bugger drew the short straw this morning but that's how the team works. Another short drive today covering only 275 kms well within our range for a day. The weather has been miserable with grey skies and rain on and off. We kept driving with a quick shop at Aldi in Geraldton for a few things, good specials today got all ... read more

Sunday 23rd April The day was glorious, and we set off to explore the town such as it is. Parked at the jetty and walked down to chat with the fishermen on a cray boat that had just been unloaded, Tippy was not sure about the water between the planks of the jetty he couldn’t work it out and stayed really close to us when we walked down. We watched a dolphin playing in the shallows one of the fishermen told us she had a baby with her, but we only saw the one. The place is bringing back lots of memories for Graeme from his days of fishing up here with his mates many years ago, good times, fortunately. We found a little park called Gecko Patch Hill, along the pathways were an assortment of ... read more

We finally hit the road at 9.30am not bad considering we had been up and busy since 6am. We have elected not to drive more than 300kms per day so today was at the limit of what we wanted but the weather was fine, and we were full of excitment, even the dog was racing around ... read more

We are in Busselton for our next stop. We are up early for our trip to the lighthouse and Ngilgi caves. It’s a gorgeous day with blue skies and not a cloud in the sky. The azure sea is twinkling in the sunlight. We are to tender ashore and over the tannoy the captain tells it’s the longest tender, 3 miles, because the sea is so shallow. Thank goodness the sea is much calmer than Kangaroo Island! It takes us just over 30 minutes to reach the land, passing the mile long wooden pier, the longest in the Southern Hemisphere. The beach goes on for miles and is pure white, wonderful! We are taken to the light house on a coach and our guide is a former headteacher from the city of Busselton. Now you are probably ... read more

We were at the jetty right on time, having sussed out where it was the day before. After the mandatory safety briefing we headed out to sea! We took this opportunity to nap for there wasn't much to see but blue, blue ocean! Starting at the place they call the hotspot we spotted blows mere minutes after dropping into the canyon. One of the orcas broke water’s surface with their dorsal while the other hung low, their blows sweeping over the shallow swell lines. We waited patiently while they ducked below the waves maintaining a consistent 3-minute dive interval before resurfacing again. At first, we noticed just 3 then 4, then 10 and finally 12 individuals. The others must have been hiding underneath when we first saw the blows. The large pod had 3 young males ... read more

Friday 10th March 2023 After an hectic month or so where we renovated our rental unit and found new tenants, had some medical checks and chiro for both, had LED lighting fitted throughout the house, had the laundry renovated, plus a full social calendar, we finally departed. As we drove away with the caravan in tow both of us felt excited about our trip but also a little sad to leave our lovely home, garden and all our friends. We intend being away for about 3 months leaving our friend, Jan, housesitting. As we had not had any breakfast and been busy since about 6am we stopped for brunch at a service station just south of Armadale. Here we had their 'burger with the lot' a feast we have enjoyed there on previous trips. This meal ... read more
