Tuesday 18th August A short drive out of Broome and we turn onto the Cape Leveque road for 11K before turning onto a sand road out towards the coast and then a left turn onto an even sandier road to Willie Creek. We eventually arrive at Willie Creek pearl farm and sign up for a two hour tour. The bay is really scenic. Our English guide Ben gives a good and fun explanation of pearl farming and how to tell a real from a fake and about how the price is assessed for sale. We then go off in a boat to see a couple of lines of oysters growing pearls off shore. Back on land we get taken around the inevitable shop where we have to try and guess the price of various strings of ... read more

3rd December 2012. A relaxing start to the day with a quick visit into the town centre. Tom Price is another mining town and everything here seems very expensive. Not much to see, so we bought a few things from Coles and commenced our journey to Exmouth. This trip involved a bit more gravel road and a really hot day. In the afternoon, the weather changed and it began to rain heavily, followed by the odd thunder and lightning. As the bad weather passed, we encountered the aftermath of a bushfire, with the occasional spot fires still burning. When we arrived at the main highway heading south, there was a ranger blocking access. The highway to Tom Price was closed due to the bushfires and the ranger wanted to know how we were on the road ... read more

Days on the Road = 31 Sunday 29th July 2012 Wake up after a fresh night and get ready to pull out of our rest area which has been great. We're not far from our destination so anticipate that we will arrive around 11am to check in to the one and only caravan park in Tom Price. You can't book there so hopefully we will get a spot. Arrive in Tom Price and find the park without any fuss. The caravan park is located at the base of Mount Nameless which is the tallest mountain (1128m) in Western Australia. Today they actually had a running race to the top of the mountain and someone completed it within 18 minutes. Might have to try and beat that record before I leave.......... Tom Price is the highest town ... read more

Days on the Road = 28 Saturday 28th July 2012 Well we're on the road again and heading towards Tom Price. We leave Exmouth by 10am not forgetting to go past the supermarket to pick up those marshmallows as we're stopping overnight on the side of the road in a designated rest area. We travel quite a distance today stopping only for fuel and to have a bite to eat. We had originally planned to stay at House Creek Bridge but decided to keep going as we would of arrived abit too early in the afternoon so we press on for another two hours to the next overnight rest area "Beasley River Rest Area". All in all we were on the road for a total of seven hours today and I'm absolutely shattered. After not seeing ... read more

Thank goodness for our differences; this blog will probably define where we sit in the big picture. Gascoyne Junction is a small village of about 7 or 8 houses, a caravan park of sorts – mainly for the local work force, and the Shire Offices (Upper Gascoyne) which also doubles and the local roadhouse. They sell fuel and other items needed by travellers and locals alike, and given that they are at least 145 kms from anywhere else, that is probably appropriate. The reference to the Shire Offices is important as the road from Carnarvon to GJ was undoubtedly the best (smoothest) we have been on all trip. Before arriving at GJ our intention was to leave the van there and do day trips to the gorges of the Kennedy Ranges. After checking in at the ... read more

Sunday June 10th It was a windy night and with the dawn came heavy, soaking rain. Just in time for us to pack up for the long drive to Tom Price. This situation is when one of the "cons" of camper trailers vs caravans beomes apparent - the camper trailer has a lot of openings during the packing process and rain can get in. Anyway Mike and I trudged around in the mud, in dripping raincoats, and packed it all up. A short stop in Exmouth for some shopping and we headed off. The rain varied from torrential to drizzling. Stopped for lunch at Nanutarra roadhouse, in torrential rain. Red slippery mud everywhere! Paid $20 for four drinks (two of them little juice boxes) and a pack of lifesavers... no prices marked, guess if you have ... read more

After a few days of hard travelling we had a day of RnR in Tom Price today. We took a mid-morning walk up the trail to Mount Nameless but that soon turned into a testing hike. While we never intended on going to the top we still made it about one third of the way up the mountain side. The views over the town were great and the mountain itself was more impressive the further we hiked.... read more

Coral Bay to Tom Price....what a drive. We hit the road just after 8:00 this morning on a perfect day in Coral Bay. On the way inland we again saw some enormous ant hills. You have to see them to believe them but some of the hills stand close to six feet tall. My favourite view on the journey today was the bushland in and around the floodways which turn to inland seas during the wet season. In some areas there was quite a contrast between the golden wild grass and the trees and shrubs in the floodways and in other greener areas the rich green colour of the trees surpassed those only 20 metres down the road. The green wild grass also grew right to the edge of the road in these areas. The contrast ... read more

Monday 13th - Even though we were going on another tour today we had a bit of a lie-in but we were still checking in at the Visitor Centre at about 9.15 to make sure of our places. With half an hour to spare we had time for a coffee. Today’s tour was to be a complete contrast to yesterdays – less than two hours and with no clambering in and out of gorges. It was necessary, however, to collect some safety goggles and a helmet from the visitor’s centre which is where the tour started from. There was virtually a coach full – over 50 people – for this tour (including some who we had spent the day with yesterday) which had been highly recommended to us by several people. We were going to tour ... read more
