Wildflowers as far as the eye can see ... we could travel 100-200 km on these red dusty roads and at each side of the road we marvelled at swathes of all different wildflowers and flowering shrubs and trees . On a couple of days I counted the cars that we saw 3 one day and 4 the next . Yes this was remote and where else but in Oz would you drive 60 km there and 60 km back to a place near Pindar to see wreath flowers. And there they were along the side of the road ..they only grow on disturbed earth and they do look like wreaths ... lots of cars trailers and caravans there just to see this spectacle. We were aiming for Kennedy Ranges National Park...that would be the furthest ... read more

We were reluctant to leave Malcolm Dam but as we had procrastinated for 5 days we knew it was time! Headed into Leonora and used the dump point and filled up with water. Some mongrel had removed the hoses from both places – very strange behaviour. The drive to Leinster was interesting. We were going through country which was scrubby and very dry, then would come across a small patch of healthy looking eucalyptus for a few hundred metres then back to the sparse country again. As were neared the turn off to Leinster the beautiful white trunked gum trees became more prevalent and then became the dominant species. We went into Leinster itself. It has wonderful plantings of trees and must be a great oasis in the very hot summer months. The roads are in ... read more

SUZUKI HEAVEN or HELL ? I suppose it depends if you are a SUZUKI or its driver! Here at Mt Vernon station WA the little 413 Suzuki plays an important part of the station operations, from bore runs to mustering they get hell The main use is as a bull chaser , during mustering these little 4WDs take the place of horses or quads as they are one of the few means of transport that are nimble and strong enough for the conditions. As seen in the photos they are extensively barred up to cope with the animals and terrain, breakages are just part of life, all carry 2 spare tires on the back and a very simple jacking system, spares on board include springs , hoses, belts, drive shafts and if you don’t have it ... read more

So Carnarvon ended up being the last stop of the road trip. The other girls decided they needed a job for a bit and so found work in this town at a pub called the Gascoyne. We had found a good camp site to stay at that had a pool so I spent a lot of time there working on my tan! I tried looking for work as well but found it hard to find somewhere. It soon became clear that the other girls were wanting to stay in Carnarvon for quite a while and that wasn't what I wanted. The town was ok but I didn't really want to stay there for a long period. I eventually found work in a bar/nightclub called the Tropicana that paid well, but still wasn't that happy living in ... read more

I know it has been months since my last entry. I will try to get back into the routine of updating my blog! I really fell in love with Meeka during my 4.5 months there. I came across a lot of lovely people and made a lot of friends. I enjoyed my time serving behind the bar and a lot of the locals became good friends and drinking partners after work! Meeka is surrounded by mines and stations so we got a lot of miners, contractors, prospectors looking for gold and station workers passing through. I certainly heard a lot of stories from these guys! Meeka is a small town, but if you interact with the locals and make an effort to socialise, it is a fun place to stay. There are a surprising amount of ... read more

We struck it rich, so sorry everyone we will not be returning home now. Colin, Mali and I did some fossicking at GEM TREE (40km’s east on Plenty H’way - off Stuart H’way) and found approx 35 garnets. We actually did a fossicking tour; we worked our arse off for 4 hours playing in the dirt. Sifting, sorting, picking and shoveling. It became a competition with Colin as I found the first 5. Once we got into a rhythm it felt like I was born to do it, in my blood you could say. Some of you might know I am doing a little family tree investigating, and my great grandfather was a miner amongst other things in the same area. Then east a further 100km’s to ARLTUNGA. We visited the information centre which to our ... read more

Sorry it's been so long, just been busy working! So I had a great time in Cairns and actually really liked the place. It's on the coast but doesn't have a beach and unfortunately the lagoon was shut for refurbishment and only opened the day we left! Typical! We did a snorkelling trip on the Great Barrier Reef, which was amazing! You could see so much more than in Whitsundays. The colours of the reef and the fish were fantastic. I saw a turtle and we all saw a humpback whale from the boat. Also, at one of the snorkelling sights, there was a massive fish which always comes up to the boat when they get there. His name was Wally and I actually got to touch him. He was as big as a hay bale ... read more
