Visited the Jewel Cave near Augusta. We were a little early so went on the Karri Walk. Takes about 30/40 mins, followed a trail through a wonderful Karri forest. The caves were absolutely fantastic - amazing stalactites and stalagmites. Really long straw stalactites. Then drove to Hamlin Bay. Had an entire spotless, golden beach to ourselves. Had a great walk along the beach and over the dunes.... read more

Pencil shavings, baked bread, plums, vanilla, chocolate……. These are just a few of the aromas and taste notes to be found in the amazing wines we tried on our ‘Wine for Dudes’ tour in the Margaret River wine region! What a brilliant time we had. Although, in fairness, since we left Perth in Tony the Toyota last Friday, we’ve been having a ball from sunrise to sunset each and every day. So - here’s what we’ve been up to……… Firstly, to get your bearings, think of a map of Aus. We are currently situated on the bottom left hand corner, south of Perth, and we’re heading downwards in a loop, hugging the coast before heading off to the right for about 800kms. Next we scoot back up in a loop to the left (via the goldfields ... read more

Arrived in Margaret River for wine tasting. Accomodation of a high standard (and price!) so decided to try out being TPT...just call us Kevin and Britney! We're staying at River View Tourist Park - not bad and walkable into town. The first afternoon and the next day we headed straight for the wineries. NB. All tastings were free! We went to: Leeuwin Wines Great wines - is one of the very best wine producers of WA. (Thanks Scott for the advice. ) Amazing estate. Wines pretty expensive so we had our samples and scarpered! Voyager Dutch Gable South African style building - really magnificent. Owned by Michael Wright who, it is alleged, is a tee totaller! D loved the gift shop - rammed full of precious things! Gill, you'd have l... read more

From Freo to Bunbury; wild dolpin spotting. Unfortunately due to the bad weather for the time of year, none to be seen. Will try on the way back. Stayed in The Lighthouse Motel - great views of the coast and ocean. Bonus for poor travelling folk...free laundery and spa!!... read more

Ok, yet another exceptionally late entry - but why change a habit that works. After the preparation we set off for our test run down the coast to Margaret River (mmm wine region). The first taste of 'camping' was a small concrete block next to the toilets in a tree laden park. At the time we thought the park was dingy but tolerable, and the price was high ($24). Since then we've realised our standards can drop somewhat lower and what we pay has, at times, jumped painfully higher. The drive down was unexceptional, with an occasional taste of the poorer Australian driving and examples of depressed wildlife tossing itself in front of Marvin. We found this latter practice a bit distressing at first, but sadly got more used to it as time went on. The ... read more

The weather has perked up nicely for our trip to the beautiful Margaret River Region. It's just a perfect setting for a wee trip to sample the region's local delights. Number one on the list wine, wine and more wine as well as some cheese, venison, olive oil, and most importantly for me a wee trip down to Willie Wonka's. The wine was good as was the cheese, venison and oil and the chocolate certainly didn't let us down, however I was pretty dissappointed I didn't see any Oompah Loompah's! The tour was done really well by this guy called Tony who was an ex surfie Margaret River local. There were only three others on the tour so it wasn't to rushed. Afterwards we returned home a little confused about the art of wine tasting, quite ... read more

The coastal scenery on the way to Margaret River was pretty amazing. We stopped off in a wee place called Augusta to see Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse and to see where the Indian meets the Southern Ocean. Finally we got some sunshine and we got some nice pictures of the sun setting at Cape Leeuwin. Augusta looks like a lovely place, unfortunately we have a date with Margaret River (the winery region) so we set off with alcohol in mind!! ... read more

Whilst in Albany we ventured to the gap and the natural bridge and the blowholes, all of these are natural rock formations. We braved the whaling museum after, which although sad was enlightening and worth seeing. The next day was spent chilling in Albany and seeing the old gaol (jail) and then heading off to Esperance, due to us leaving late we had to stop in a small town called Jerramungup which consisted of a roadhouse, hotel and a campsite and a few houses. In the morning we headed the rest of the way to Esperance arrived around lunchtime. Drove around on the coast road and checked out the beautiful beaches and coastline, we even stopped at the pink lake (although it wasn't really pink!!).... read more

Departed on the Friday morning. I was a little late and for once Claire was on time! The result of which was me being in trouble... wooops (Thankfully this wasn't going to set a precedent for the entire weekend)!!! After the car was packed and the rules laid down (Rule 1 - No Mention of Work. Rule 2) No fast food to be consumed. Rule 3 - Daniel can made up further rules whenever he wishes.) we were on the road for the short two and a half hour drive to Margaret River. With the trusty iRiver cranking out some tasty tunes (much to Claire's delight) we made good time with only one stop required to pick up the ultimate road trip food, a cheese sausage! On arrival our tummies were rumbling which was a signal ... read more

Whilst staying at Bridgetown you cannot miss the biggest tourist attraction here and thats the Gloucester tree, which is a 60m high lookout and you can climb it if you wish, of course i wished!! The birds in the forest were that friendly that they sat on us looking for food. After the tree were headed down the coast to see the great tingle tree, a tree with the largest trunk, from there it was to the valley of the giants and the treetop walk. After all that we travelled some more to Albany were we spent the night.... read more
