BRRRRR, it was really cold this morning. The el-cheapo thermometer in the MH even refused to give a number for the temperature. Apparently this morning was the coldest morning on record this year at Kalbarri, and adding to the low temp was a steady breeze adding a chill factor. However, as intrepid seekers of photo opportunities, we rallied and the four of us went into the Kalbarri National Park. This park covers a huge area, but today we wanted to visit Nature's window and Z Bend. The road into the park has been closed for some time, and as a school holiday concession, it would be opened briefly today, Saturday and Sunday, then closed until October. The road (through sandy/rocky heathland) had badly deteriorated, and there was a need for new toilets and parking areas to ... read more

Thursday arrived with clear skies and a cool breeze. No longer the gusty winds of the past several days, so on the road by 8:30 heading north. The first planned stop was Northampton, a heritage listed town first gazetted in 1864, making this the second oldest town in WA. The area prospered with a solid history of cropping and grazing as well as a variety of mining ventures. The town was also the terminus for WA's first public railway linking this area with the port of Geraldton. Modern transport has seen the demise of the railway dominance of yesteryear. Taking pride of place in the main street is the Catholic Church. The Architect for this church project also built the Catholic Cathedral in Geraldton as well as several others in the region. While there are some ... read more

This trip had no particular timeline to it, we just wanted to get away for a week or two to relax. Kalbarri was chosen as the temperatures there had been a couple more than Perth, and it was somewhere we had never been to together. After an overnight stop at Dongara we reached Kalbarri about lunchtime and settled into the Murchison Caravan Park. The park itself was quite busy, many older couples and most of them with dogs. Most parks won't allow pets, the popularity of this park compared to others attesting to this need. Every day we were here we ensured we did something to keep up our exercise, either walking or riding our bikes. The bikes were used nearly every day to explore the town and nearby scenic spots, there being cycle paths alongside ... read more

Geo: -27.7106, 114.164For some stupid reason we set the alarm (6.30) to get an early start for Kalbarri. That is going to take some getting used to again. It was another sunny day and we were sorry to leave Denham, but excited to see another town. Kalbarri is a beautiful tidy town with a population of 2000. The beach is much more rugged than we have seen before but it is stunning with red cliffs and patches of red sand. There were so many oysters on the rocky shores. The whole area has easy access to the beaches for fishing, surfing, swimming and even driving on the beach (no we didn't drive on it).Unfortunately the road to Z-Bend and Natures Window was closed for road works until October which is the whole peak season and seemed a ... read more

Every time we get in the car to head north we are so hopeful for less rain, sunnier weather and warmer water, Kalbarri meets two of these criteria, no rain and slightly warmer ocean but still cold, down to two degrees overnight! The kids don’t care about the weather because behold they have free wifi (yes free internet) at the caravan park. We still manage to drag the kids away from the ipads to check out the sights and sounds of Kalbarri. Firstly we’re off to Jake’s Point, a reef break where the waves break along the point and the girls and I can get an up close view of the action. Matt's Say: Jake's is like Blacks but there is dry rock right in front of you! There is definitely 2 takeoff points...the local crew ... read more

We continued north along the coast, and saw there was a place on the map where camping was permitted for free which seemed to be right on the beach. We had to check it out. 9 times out of 10 it will just be a little pocket next to the road, where everyone can see everything, which, when there is no toilet, does make for complicated situations. We drove down a dirt road and it ended, well, in a pocket next to a dumpster, where there was a caravan parked and we could see straight into the nice older couple having dinner. Embarrassed, we thought if we just drove onto a patch of sand, we could at least have our backs to them. Well, that quickly turned into us getting stuck, or “bogged”, as one says ... read more

9thDecember 2012 We had a relaxing morning and enjoyed a big breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, baked beans and grilled tomatoes (Yum, we all enjoyed that!). We were ready for a big day of exploring and fun. We arrived at the town of Kalbarri and stopped by the jetty for a swim and a play in the park. We headed towards a few beached in Kalbarri. One of the beaches, called Red Bluff, had fantastic waves (something that was missing in the beaches up North). The girls enjoyed the surf and even managed to be dumped by the waves a few times. After a busy fun filled day we headed towards Geraldton and camped at the Big 4 for the night.... read more

As we have travelled south crossing the Tropic of Capricorn and the 26th parallel things have suddenly become much cooler, especially at night. The doona has made an appearance again for the first time in many, many weeks. Clouds have begun to appear in the sky and flies seem to abound in the millions. In fact, if you didn’t keep your mouth closed in Kalbarri you could feast on slow moving tiny flies. This was a lesson learnt very quickly. Kalbarri: never heard of it but wish we had known more about it before we got there as we probably would have chosen to stay a couple of days instead of just over-night. It was a beautiful seaside town surrounded by stunning National parks. The Murchison River winds its way through amazing gorges in the National ... read more

Day 55 – Thursday 23rd August – Kalbarri to Cliff Head (100kms south of Geraldton) Even though we don’t like staying in caravan parks because everyone is on top of each other and they are usually so crowded, we must admit it is convenient to have a camp kitchen with mod cons such as kettles, toasters, sinks and running hot water! We had gallons of tea and piles of toast for breakfast and a takeaway coffee from the café round the corner. I forgot to mention the excellent shower we had last night in the brand new shower block at the campsite. We have definitely established that having a shower every day is a luxury and not a necessity but it is nice to feel squeaky clean every now and again and have freshly ... read more

Day 54 – Wednesday 22nd August – Francois Peron National Park to Kalbarri It was blowy and trying hard to rain when we woke up this morning at 6.30. But as soon as we ventured out of the tent we could see that it would brighten up and indeed the dew/rain on the tent had dried out by the time we packed up at 8am. Driving back along the sandy track one of the warning lights came on in the car (traction control). It’s one of the lights that mean you have to get your car checked by a Toyota dealer ASAP. Hmmm. We didn’t feel it would be dangerous to drive another few hundred kms to the nearest dealer in Geraldton, so we booked an appointment with the service department for tomorrow afternoon. ... read more
