The house at Cormorant Court has been another lovely holiday house to call home for a few days on our journey … even if the mattresses were a little firm. The only slightly strange thing about this stay was the pricing structure. There was a price for the house and access to all its amenities but add $65.00 if you want sheets on the beds and towels in the bathrooms. Finally, after transporting sheets and towels across the country we put them on our beds on Friday to save ourselves the $65.00 linen surcharge!! So, we re-packed the truck this morning and then draped our wet towels over the top of our luggage. Hopefully they will be dry enough at the end of today’s travels to be able to refold and stash then away for the ... read more

From the Stirling Ranges I travelled due north through acres and acres of wheat and canola interspersed with salt lakes many of which were dried up and covered with a startlingly white crisp and crunchy surface of salt. It was a puzzle to me how the ground immediately around and right up to these salt pads could be such good arable land bearing what appeared to be some very good crops coming on ready to harvest. I was heading for the Tin Horse Highway which leads into the very proud little township of Kulin and of which I had heard many fellow travelers speaking and saying it was worth a drive. It is only a short strip of approximately 15 kms but good for a laugh and a tip of the hat to the ingenuity and ... read more

Surfing on Wave Rock It’s early when we leave Cape Le Grande, the sun was beautiful coming up over the water, but we don’t see any kangaroos on the edges of the road like we did yesterday when we went into town. Today is like every other, we never know where we are going to be sleeping tonight. When we get to Ravensthorpe we go to the servo to get petrol, and see someone come out with hot chips, it’s only eleven am but we go and get some too. Early lunch. We decide to turn inland and go up past Lake King to see Wave Rock. I don’t know why the power of the universe put that rock so far out of the way! But we leave the coast behind and head back inland. It’s ... read more

When we arrived back to Perth from Shark Bay we picked up a hire car and drove to Brookton, which was our stop over on the way to Wave Rock. Wave Rock is a large sandstone rock formation that was created over 400 million years and now looks like a giant wave. It is 45m high and 110m long. Visited the local animal park, some of the inmates in the pics. Next, back to Perth and off to Darwin.... read more

Geo: -32.4495, 118.865We are running short on our time in Australia so we cut down our loop through the southwest corner, omitting Esperence (which, depending on who we talked to, was either a huge mistake because we'd be missing out on the best beaches in the world, or a good idea because it was just beaches) and Kalgoolie (which was either vintage Golden Outback, or just a modern mining town). Our foray into the Golden Outback was going to be limited to Hyden which was home to another of those rock formations that was a must-see. On our way we passed by the Stirling Mountains and a number of dry salt water lakes that caused us to do a double-take; even up close they looked like frozen over ponds ready to host a pickup game of ... read more

23 June 2011 Nearly eight months on the road and we have just clicked over 27,000kms! After sadly leaving Esperance, we accidently found ourselves at Wave Rock. We'd had a long day of driving and decided to stop at the next camp we stumbled across. Well, that idea didn't last long when we found a weird campground - think Wolf Creek kind of weird - so on we pushed and ended up at Hyden, home to the famous Wave Rock. We stayed only a night as it wasn't a cheap place to bunk down but made the most of the following morning by doing the walk to Hippo's Yawn and Wave Rock. After the many times of seeing Wave Rock in magazines and books, nothing really compares to seeing it in real life and to contemplate ... read more

Wave Rock is a natural rock formation located east of the small town of Hyden in Western Australia. It derives its name from the fact that it is shaped like a tall breaking ocean wave. Wave Rock has cultural significance to Aborigines. One aspect of Wave Rock rarely shown on photographs is the retaining wall about halfway up the rock. This follows the contours and allows rainwater to be collected in a storage dam. It was constructed in 1951 by the Public Works Department, and such walls are common on many similar rocks in the Wheatbelt. Wave Rock is composed of granite. The total outcrop covers several hectares and is part of the Hyden Rock erosional remnant. The "wave" part of the rock is about 15 m (50 ft) high and around 110 m (350 ft) ... read more

Day 81 Do the Wave!! Wave rock that is. We of course did the surfer pose. Lol. It was stunning. I couldn’t believe it. I guess I should go back a bit though. We did take Sean out to the mine to have a peak and threw some rocks down to the water. Cause… well.. that’s fun. The trail end is about 40km away… maybe a bit more, I sometimes lose track. This section of track got ugly, with some deep mud and some steep angles to put the truck on with the driver front tire coming off the ground almost a foot due to a slight swing of the tail end as the it slide off the embankment and fell into the mud. But we survived. And made our way into Hyden for a refuel ... read more
