Melbourne and The Great Ocean Road
Published: January 19th 2012Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » North MelbourneWe decided we wanted to see Melbourne and The Great Ocean Road before we left Australia and thought it would be really fun to drive there! It took about 4 days to get there (and about 1800kms!) We got to see loads of beautiful countryside on the way and crossed 2 states! We camped on the way down and stayed in some really funny little places- some of them were teeny tiny towns, with only one road in and out and not a tourist in sight!! Most of them were off the New England Highway and all called English names, like 'Stratford upon the river Avon' 'Gloucester' and even 'Stroud'. We stayed in Melbourne itself (in a hotel this time!) for a couple of days and did a few sights- it's such a beautiful city- so ... read more
Melbourne Part 3
Published: January 23rd 2011Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » North MelbourneDecember was a much more social affair than the previous month. This was because I had started to settle into Melbourne more, and the fact that hours in the warehouse had completely dried up. Which although, was not good for my bank balance; in a way it forced me to go out and do things to fill my days. Although I did still have my friday bar shift once a week at the nearby Moone Valley Racecourse. It was here, early on in the month, that I became pals with an Oz girl called Ella (and before anyone comes to any conclusions, she has a boyfriend), but we immediately had a rapport. After the shift we went out for a few drinks, during which she promised that she would show me the real Melbourne. During this ... read more
Melbourne part 2
Published: December 14th 2010Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » North MelbourneAt the beginning of November, I moved into a share house in Thornbury, which is located to the North of the city. Prior to moving in, I was told by a few people that Thornbury is an up incoming suburb in Melbourne, which is quickly becoming one of the cool spots outwith the centre to live. The suburb next door, Northcote, is also a very hip bohemian place, and supposedly has an excellent music venue in the Northcote Social Club. Anyway, the house I moved into is very nice, with my room certainly being a decent size for the price I'm paying for it. I live with two girls, both of whom are fine to live with, but they are certainly not the kind of people who I would normally be friends with. They are a ... read more

Marvelling at Melbourne
Published: February 2nd 2010Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » North MelbourneCancelled trips Road trips: Australia is great for 'em; the seemingly endless tarmac, the wind in your hair, loud music pumping from the speakers, and that glorious scenery. The fact that I can't drive nor hold a driving licence is not an issue! In fact I quite like NOT driving - all that concentration and no alcohol. Borrrrring! But, maybe I should grow-up - learn to drive... I waited for Doreen’s arrival in the foyer of the hostel, I was fully packed and it was a beautifully sunny day. Doreen arrived in tears. Thrifty the hire car company - renamed Shifty by me - refused to let her have the car. They wouldn’t accept her international drivers licence without her actual driver’s licence from Germany - for some reason Doreen hadn't thought it was a useful ... read more
Melbourne mayhem
Published: June 23rd 2009Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » North Melbourne“A traveler without observation is a bird without wings”(Moslih Eddin Saadi). With those wise words in mind the first view of Melbourne over the wings of a Virgin Blue flight confirmed that this was a city worthy of it’s ranking in the “Big 3”.Sprawling in all directions and looking like a large jig saw puzzle,it was a rather dramatic change from our small town meander across WA.Also noticeable was the parched landscape which is directly linked to the fact that large parts of Victoria have been in drought mode for the last seven years.Water reserves are down to less than 30% and strict water rationing is in place.Picking up a hired car in a never before visited large city can be daunting especially at about prime rush hour when it appeared most of the city’s 4 million ... read more
The Ghan gazette
Published: June 18th 2009Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » North MelbourneThere is something magical and almost mystical about great train journeys.Iconic associations spring to mind…..The Oriental Express,The Trans Siberian Express, our own Blue Train and of course some of those Inspector Hercule Poirot murder movies, one of which was set on a train. When planning our travels through Australia there was no real connect with their World class train journeys until Sue’s brother,Rory Lynsky, traveled on The Indian Pacific from Perth to Sydney during 2008.A bit of research and there it was…The Ghan,a 2900km train journey from Darwin to Adelaide. Not only would it get us to a jump off point to access Tasmania but the added opportunity of experiencing one of the World’s top train journeys and seeing a huge slice of this enormous country was irresistible.Train travel is not a hurried affair……after all we had roughly fifty two hours ... read more
Australia's Second City
Published: February 10th 2009Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » North MelbourneMelbourne Heat Wave We woke at the ungodly hour of 4:30am to make it the airport for our first Virgin Blue flight to Melbourne. I promised Eric no more flights this early, but we could not pass up the deal. It was twice as expensive to fly out after 8 am. After a quick and brisk flight to Melbourne, we land, hot and exhausted. As background, there appears to be an extreme rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne regarding which city is better. The rivalry is so intense that when the two cities fought over where the capital of Australia should be, the compromise was Canberra - a city no one seems to want to go to. After falling head over heels in love with Sydney, I knew Melbourne had a lot to live up to. ... read more
Feeling Hot Hot Hot!
Published: February 9th 2009Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » North MelbourneMelbourne hmmmm. It was a mixed bag to say the least. We arrived into Melbourne at 5 in the evening, foolishly thinking that the hottest part of the day was around midday, only to discover that the hottest part of the day during a heat wave tends to be dinner time - woohoo - let’s bake J Walking out of the lovely air conditioned airport into the evening sun felt similar to walking into a very hot sauna (fully clothed and carrying rucksacks). Once we arrived at our hostel we were very happy to have booked a nice double room all to ourselves. We had a huge fan and a nice big window, but no air-con which was a bit tough. But the common room had a huge TV and some cosy couches and plenty of ... read more
Inasmuch that not even a technicolour troupe of all-singing all-dancing munchkins were enough to keep poor Dorothy from pining for her dear Aunt Em and a way back home, I was shocked (and am sure you´ll be astounded to learn) that after five months down under in a land affectionately known as Oz - enjoying glorious sunshine, golden beaches and phenomenal vineyards - I involuntarily found myself clicking my Merrell trainer heels and thinking, yup, Dorothy, you were right - ´there´s no place like home, there´s no place like home´!! Shockers, I know!!! :-0 What can I say?? Melbourne just ain´t home. I had a fabulous 5 months. I made some awesome friends. I seriously loved the cafe culture. And I was much impresssed by the vibrant arts scene - never done so much theatre and ... read more
