Well it’s very cold this week, bitterly cold. But the sun still shines and it’s interesting being in the southern hemisphere and Australia where a hat, gloves and scarf are required. I arrived in Australia nearly 12 months ago and it was the same conditions then in way-off over there Perth, Western Australia - so I feel like I've come full-circle in my head. It’s fair to say that I’ve on the receiving end of some rather generous acts of kindness from various people since arriving in Melbourne. Whether it be turning up at Christen's place and letting me stay for a few days which has turned into never having left. Claire has taking me out on weekends to the mining town of Bendigo and the famous wine country of Yarra Valley. Robert buying me a ... read more

Melbourne Diary: As I'm walking along a busy Elizabeth Street in the Central Business District two teenage girls are walking behind me. “Fack that! Fack that! No facking way” etc. It got me thinking about how many times I’ve been shocked by the proclivity for cursing here. Keep with me. For example on I've witnessed a couple of altercations between passengers trading some seriously aggressive swearing such as: "go fuck yourself!" and “Up ya, ya facking cant” - and that was from a woman. I’ve turned into Disgusted of Brunswick all of a sudden. Even my work colleagues regularly surprise me by using ”fack” and “shit” in mid-sentence as if it's any old word. Coarse language features prominently in Australia it seems (I could of course make reference to sixty years of British criminals being sent ... read more

“Isn’t Melbourne supposed to be boring?” asked my eldest sister over the phone from England. It’s true that visitors don’t seem to stay more than a few days at a time - which I suspect is due to the lack of block-buster sights of say Sydney with its harbour and bridge. I didn’t have high expectations of Melbourne myself, as a self-confessed culture vulture - I had assumed that the diversity (I promise to use that term only once) of everything my London offered would be missing here; whether it be the lively and historic pub crawls, block-buster art exhibitions, film festivals, gigs, markets, walks or talks. So, armed with a Lonely Planet Guide to Melbourne (which by the way is the home of LP), the counsel of an American house mate who’d been here five ... read more

It appears I chose a very good time to leave the country and to travel the world for a bit. The UK couldn’t feel more distant at the moment, what with the endless reports of economic meltdown from the global recession, deep freezing winters and transport melt-down.…whereas the "wonder from down under" goes from strength to strength. Becoming the first G20 country to raise interest rates from the emergency level. Unemployment actually went down, bucking the global trend and surprising local economists who had all predicted a small rise.” Meanwhile back in Blighty: Elected members from the so-called “mother of all parliaments” disgrace themselves by being rather keen on claiming fake expenses; British Airways goes on a week-long strike - ruining everybody’s holidays and making us look like the keen as mustard strikes a-go-go French; the ... read more

Wow. All of this writing about the places I’ve been, the people I’ve met, the things I've done and not one word about what I do from Monday to Friday seven-and-a-half hours every day; Correction: make that twelve hours of my day if I count the haphazard Melbourne Transport “system”. Yes. I’m talking work. Data monkey Data-entry! For a university! But not any old data monkey lark mind - I locate then input research publications online and since my previous job roles have been variants of finding research; writing about research; building services for this research; I've been described as an asset. My only concern (read: not much of one) is that I’m away from a ‘proper’ job and not actually developing many skills; sure there's definite ‘experience’ but nothing on the personal development side of ... read more

Gawd Almighty!- I've been recently having some serious flash-backs of stuff that’s happened during my 13 months away - both good and bad. I realise that I’ve managed to NOT record some of the most memorable moments of my entire time away, either consciously or unconsciously. Some tasty flashbacks include: Adelaide: having spent an exotic, sunny and welcoming Christmas with Hannah and her large family and then being asked to leave on Boxing Day because I'd threatened her big mental German Shepherd Dog Koh Phi Phi, Thailand in a shitty, tiny hostel room/cell having a night time trystwith an English chick who’d gotten locked out of her room next door to mine Bangkok, Thailand being chased and attacked by a group of rabid dogs in the centre of the city behind a temple. They smell your ... read more

Go on say it; you’ve missed me. It’s alright; I've missed you too. For a few reasons this blog entry has taken forever to write; Firstly I’m not really ‘travelling’ at the moment, so a certain purpose to write is missing. Connected to that is Australia doesn’t feel like a 'foreign' country to me - it's less exciting than say Borneo or Vietnam. Thirdly, I don’t know if I’m actually saying anything of worth or originality - I may simply be repeating hackneyed expressions of yet another backpacker. Maybe because - travel writing is flawed by ‘post-colonial sensitivities, by travels, commonness, by globalisation, and by journalistic encroachments.’ - according to some bloke called John Cassan at least. To cure my lethargy I read a lot of travel books and somewhat influenced by them (acerbic and hyper-honest ... read more

“Although happiness is desirable, it is a banal subject for travel.” (Paul Theroux) The modern traveller’s necessary instrument (the gods are against me - a litany) Good old Paul, allowing me to tell tales of woe without that feeling of boring people to muteness. Just two weeks into my grand tour of south east Asia I am at the entrance of a Buddhist temple in Mandalay, Burma and as I bend down to remove my shoes my camera drops to the ground. I had stupidly placed the camera in my shirt pocket and now the lens has a ‘V’ shaped crack across it. I now spend a whole afternoon being ridden around in a rickshaw through the side lanes of Mandalay visiting camera repair men; but more like camera cannibals. Nothing can be done - the ... read more

Friday, Dec 25th - Christmas Day Wow, it’s Christmas already. I really can’t believe this year is almost over again. I know it sounds stupid, but I feel like time is passing by faster as you get older… I must admit, I don’t feel Christmassy at all. It’s just not the same celebrating Christmas, when it’s hot outside. Plus I missed out on stuff like the Christmas markets, Christmas songs on the radio, Christmas candy and stuff. And fortunately the shops here aren’t big about Christmas songs and decoration either (as opposed to Kuala Lumpur). For me this is totally fine for this year. I mean, there is gonna be more Christmases to come… Haven’t really written since I moved in here. Let me give you the facts about this house: There are up to 18 ... read more
