The last time we were in Strahan the sky was grey and the fog so thick you could only see about 10 metres offshore. Today was the complete opposite with the sun high in the sky and not a cloud in sight. Late morning we took a walk into the town centre and had a coffee by the water’s edge looking out on Macquarie Harbour. From there we did a one hour loop walk that took us out to Hogarth Falls. It was suitable for all ages and pretty laid back as the path lead us through forest out to the Falls. The afternoon was spent as all Sunday afternoons should be spent.....doing as we pleased.... read more

An added bonus of our stay at Peppers was the buffet breakfast and that proved good preparation for the walks we had planned for the day. After checking out we walked the King Billy track near the lodge that took us up through dense rainforest. Most of the terrain was covered in moss as it is so damp and cold throughout much of the year that it rarely dries out. We then drove down to the Cradle Mountain Visitor’s Centre where we purchased passes for the National Park. The cost included transport around the Park and we hopped onto a shuttle bus up to Dove Lake. The next walk was far more strenuous than the first. The 6km loop around the Lake is marked as easy but it has more than a few obstacles to test ... read more

Thursday I did work experience at The West Coast Wilderness Railway. An awesome attraction, which had an amazing team and they reallly managed to get everybody excited, including me. Once again a wonderfull and beautiful trip in Strahan. It was a trip back in time to where men laboured through mud, rain and treacherous landscapes to forge a link between the mining town of Queenstown and the port of Strahan. The West Coast Wilderness Railway forms a gateway for visitors to explore Tasmania’s unique rail heritage, discovering the inspiring story of the pioneers who built the railway more than 100 years ago. Along this journey you will stop at stations of the past – where your trained guides will bring to life the stories of these historic points on the railway. Monday morning I went on the Gordon River Cruises. What an amazing and beautiful trip, the pictures will speak for themselfs. Appearing to stand silent within Tasmania’s World Heritage Area, the majestic Gordon River winds its way from deep in the South-West to the mouth of Macquarie Harbour near Strahan. A cruise aboard Lady Jane Franklin II on these majestic Tasmanian waterways, the site of many historic battles for our convict heritage, original settlers and conservationists. Reach out to the ancient temperate rainforests and touch their craggy surfaces that bear witness to hundreds of thousands of years. The highly trained guides who tell stories along the way are available to help you fully enjoy your experience. Read more: http://www.puretasmania.com.au/default.asp?pID=45 ... read more

12 - 14 January 2011 This little section of the Tasmania trip was fantastic and a highlight for us all. Macquarie Heads is a 12km dirt road drive from Stahan on the west coast. Stahan is a gorgeous little port town with a huge harbour with lost of history. We visted the timber mill which was full of Huon Pine and beautiful carvings. Huon Pine is no longer logged by law in Tasmania but there is still enough supply from the logging days and also from loose branches and trees that are found floating down the rivers. They call huon pine "the oldest living Tasmanian as it has been around for millions of years. From Strahan we took a Gordon River Cruise which was amazing. It took us out past the heads and into the Indian ... read more

Today we were booked to go out on the Gordon River Cruise. We boarded the vessel at 8.30am and set off towards “Hells Gate”. This is a very narrow channel at the mouth of the Macquarie Harbour where the harbour flows into the Great Southern Ocean. It is a very small channel and it is amazing that ships can navigate this opening. Originally this channel was not deep enough for ships to pass through so a rock wall was built on the right hand approach to the channel and the channel was dredged. We then cruised on through Macquarie Harbour (six times larger than Sydney Harbour) and down the Gordon River stopping at the Heritage Landing Nature Walk. This was a lovely walk through the Huon Pines and other natural vegetation. Our walk was followed by ... read more

Today we enjoyed the 'Wilderness Railway' Tour. This Tour starts at Regatta Point, just outside of Strahan. The first part of the Railway, from Queenstown to Teepookana was completed in 1896. The rest of the line, linking Queenstown to Strahan was completed in 1900, when the final link to Regatta Point was completed. The railway was built to enable the Queenstown copper mines to send their copper to Macquarie Harbour for shipping and to allow supplies and equipment to be brought in to the mining town. The railway runs along the side of the King and Queen Rivers and travels over several bridges. A diesal engine pulls the carriages up the first leg of the journey to the station of ‘Dubbil Barril’. The train makes a stop here for lunch while the Steam Engine is attached. ... read more
