Miena to Hamilton We had a very good day today with a cold start at 7 degrees but ended at about 20deg and sunny. Very pleasant ride down to Bothwell and had wallaby pie and chips at the Devils Den Cafe for lunch. Along the way today we saw sheep farms on the high ground with beef cattle lower down with some massive South Devon Bulls around s small lake. The land is very brown and does not look very fertile but the livestock looks very healthy regardless. As we approached Hamilton we turned right on the A10 and dropped down a steep hill for 3 kilometres which must be climbed tomorrow morning on our way to Hobart. A mutiny could be on the cards tomorrow. When we eventually arrived at the Hamilton Hotel it was ... read more

Coasted up one side of the Tamar River on the North East coast, crossed the “Batman” bridge and carried on up the other side to GeorgeTown, the third oldest town in Tasmania. Surprisingly the main street was quite modern but it has plenty of old buildings dotted around the side streets. Checked out the lighthouse at the very top and then carried on our way towards the East Coast exploring the small towns along the way, passing through a mountain pass, rolling hills and ended up at a goat cheese farm for a delicious tasting of their fare. That is our second cheese stop already and had to buy pass a third as we definitely have enough in the fridge already! The East Coast is just beautiful and we have stopped at many beaches today. St ... read more

Today we had nothing much on the cards so we hit the road early with not much of a plan in mind. In the end the drive took us from Strahan through Queenstown and then south-east through various National Parks before arriving at Hamilton. The drive was reasonably windy and slow going but the scenery was changing by the minute and transitioned from forest to farm land. Other than the general store there was not much open in Hamilton but the sleepy little town did have a great camp by the river. Only $5 for the night and with $1 hot showers we had found what we were after. There were a few other punters around setting up for the night so it proved a popular little spot. The group also included a lone cyclist who ... read more

Today we left the Old School House in Hamilton and drove to Strahan via the Lyell Highway. Our first stop along the way was at a Gallery called “The Wall”. Greg Duncan has created this stunning sculpture located in a gallery at the Derwent River Bridge. The 'Wall in the Wilderness' is Greg’s commemoration to those who shaped the past and present of the central highlands of Tasmania. It is a work in progress and is carved from 3 metre high panels of timber most of which are rare Huon Pine. I don’t have any photos of ‘The Wall’ as no cameras are allowed in the Gallery. It is an amazing work of art. When completed it will be 100metres long. Next stop was at the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Unfortunately it was raining quite ... read more
