Coober Pedy to Port Augusta
Published: September 10th 2006Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Port AugustaDay 161 Sunday 10 September 2006 Coober Pedy to Port Augusta (600 kms approx) This morning Graeme was raring to go. He woke up at 6am and had a shower in our nice motel room. He woke us all up and kept saying “come on we have to get on the road”. We all struggled out of bed - we haven’t been up this early for ages. We were on the road by 7.30am. I left the kids in the pj’s. We drove and drove, there is not much scenery here just dirt and weeds. We stopped at Gundambo for morning tea and as usual Graeme bought a pie. We stopped about 100 kms away from Port Augusta to have lunch in a roadside stop. We arrived in Port Augusta about 2.30pm with the red light ... read more
Burra to Port Augusta via Flinders Ranges
Published: June 27th 2006Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Port AugustaWe headed off north from Burra to the Flinders Ranges. We booked into the Rawnsley Park Station Caravan Park which is a caravan park located within a working sheep station. Not much grass around - very dusty. The park is located within the Wilpena Sound National Park. Wilpena Pound is an area with beautiful rocky hills caused by a geological fault millions of years ago which makes it look like a meteorite crater. We stayed here for 4 nights. We left the caravan at the park and for three days we drove around the area along the dirt tracks in the park. Some of these tracks were very ordinary and wove their way through rocky dry creek beds in amongst the gorges. We saw lots and lots of kangaroos and emus. We were also really lucky ... read more
One whole lot of nothing certainly is a lot of something!!
Published: June 11th 2006Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Port AugustaWell the decision has been made. I will not have time to get all the way round Australia so I am heading north. The change in the weather as I headed north was amazing. In just a few hours the skies cleared and the sun was out. It was also not long before the houses, trees and everything else started to disappear. I have hardly made a dent into the northward journey but already the landscape is changing and looking very different. On the way up I could see myself heading for a very large storm. With the land being open and barren I could see for miles. As I hit the storm the rain came down like you would never believe. It was so hard that I lost sight of the car in front of ... read more
My initial attempts to find somewhere in Port Augusta to spend a couple of nights were scuppered by the facts that i) I didn't have a map, and ii) the one hostel mentioned in my guidebook had closed down last year. While driving around, I did see a McSporran Crescent, which sounded like something from the Two Ronnies. Fortunately the Flinders Hotel was able to offer me what was essentially a motel room for the same price as the average dorm bed - unfortunately they accidentally gave me the key to someone else's room and I was lucky that the man currently in residence was simply sleeping rather than doing anything more embarrassing. There was mutual surprise when I bumped into the weird American guy from Quorn, who was staying in a room a couple of ... read more
Horses & Judo in Port Augusta
Published: May 20th 2006Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Port AugustaHi Possums How you all doing? We were just arriving at Port Augusta, weren't we. Hmmm, Kevin and Tracey, as well as Nathan and Jess, their almost grown children looked after us and entertained us very well, Jess even gave up her bedroom for us!! Jess is big into riding and horses and has a beautiful young thoroughbred chestnut mare called Tess. The weekend that we were visiting, Jessie's mentor, Kate was riding in a two day event, dressage, crosscountry and show jumping down in Kadina, so early on Saturday morning we lleft Port Augusta and headed south to Kadina. We arrived just in time to watch Kate compete in the dressage, and then Jrss Tracey & I spend the remainder of the day watching the showjumping, some of the riders were dire, but some were ... read more

Day 1 - April 02 (567 km) We left home about 7am with a few tears and drove to Ararat for morning tea. We then drove to Bordertown for lunch. Arrived at Keith at 4 pm which wasn’t too bad going considering it was the kids first big drive. The activity books that you gave, Wendy have come in handy. Everytime I turned around Duane was doing it. Kiera has been watching some DVD’s and playing with her dolls. We lost a wheel cap on the caravan on the way to Keith so the van looks funny. To Wes and Amanda you will have to buy a bigger van as ours looks like a pimple compared to others. Gra decided to park next to a big fifth wheeler this night. Were we embarrassed!!! Duane was amazed ... read more
Australian Journey 1987
Published: August 29th 2009Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Port AugustaMay 12, Tuesday: After a night of rain I was glad that the car wasn’t on the dirt anymore. The trip past The Flinders Ranges was wet, overcast and noisy, due to the fact that I didn’t have an exhaust system, the back muffler was still sitting on the roof rack. The long pipe the mechanic has fitted at Tippabara was lying in the back of the car. At Port Augusta I pitched my tent in a caravan park and arrange to have the exhaust replaced the next day. Saw my video on a colour TV in a luxury 30-foot mobile home. The elderly couple that owned the bus gave me lots of advice about traveling. May 13, Wednesday: Spent a whole day waiting for my car to be repaired. The cost was $126 for the ... read more
