Hi, to you all, One week ago we left Ceduna, South Australia headed towards Perth, West Australia. Tomorrow we'll be in Ceduna again and ready to start the next phase of our trip. We're working our way towards Wollongong, New South Wales, to meet a family we've corresponded with for several years but have never met in person. Richard from Wollongong (south of Sydney) has already phoned us on our new mobile phone to see when we'll be arriving; it was wonderful to hear his voice. We've enjoyed our trip back through the Nullarbor Plains as much as the first time. We've been watching for animals and were rewarded with more kangaroos. One night we saw two feeding in the scrub near our campsite. We wandered out closer to them but Barry remembered snakes also live ... read more

Hi all We arrived in Ceduna yesterday, after crossing the Nullabor. We had a lot of fun with Joy and Geoff Davis, from Gisbourne, playing the rustic holes of the Nullabor Links Golf Course. There was a golf hole at each Roadhouse, most were very rough with bushes, trees, and undulating rough ground, and fast astroturf greens. Chris hired lefthanded clubs at each place , and I used some of Joy's clubs. We sure had a load of laughs, and will finish off the last two holes here in Ceduna with them tomorrow. Chris and I each managed 1 par . Lots of good freeparks are along the way, so we bush camped each night. One night Chris led us down a 4WD track from the road not used for a long time, and we had ... read more

Walpole and the Tingle trees. Tingle Trees are big fat redwoods. They grow to about 75metres high and about 25metres round. And in Walpole they have loads of them in the Valley of the Giants. They have constructed a treetop walk which enables you to wander right up into the canopy of these lovely big trees. We ended the day in Albany - a lovely seaside town with rocky headlands and lovely sandy beaches. Definitely somewhere I could retire to. Now inland, driving through miles and miles of wheat fields - to the iconic Wave Rock. The wave is actually one edge of Hyden Rock which is like a mini Ayres Rock - and a lot easier to climb. The wave is amazing though and worth the 700km detour. The weather is nice and warm and ... read more

We have left Adelaide and traveled north through Port Augusta, then back down south onto the Eyre Peninsula. We stayed at a rest stop on the side of the road. The Camps Australia has more than made up for the cost of it with only having to have paid for a couple of nights camping since we left. The next morning we drove through quite desolate, barren land through Whyalla which is a steel city, there is sheds, mines, factories etc all run by Onesteel (who my dad works for) everywhere. There is also alot of army barracks and army training areas around this area. We continued on down the Peninsula finally arriving at Port Lincoln in the early afternoon. Port Lincoln was quite pretty and seemed very quiet. As it was still quite early we ... read more

We have had a second day at Ceduna, mainly because storms are expected on the Nullarbor and so we thought we'd be better off here than there. The sky is darkening so no doubt we'll have some heavy rain tonight - it's certainly needed. When we were walking around Ceduna yesterday we saw the Australian and Aboriginal flags flying at half-mast. Today there was a huge funeral where cars were banked up on all roads leading to the cemetery. Three teenagers were killed in a car crash just out of Ceduna - the car was stolen and doing 160 kph but evidently the deaths affected the town quite a bit. The caravan park here is 3km out of town and on Shelly Beach, just behind the big sandhill. Ceduna is quite an up to date town, ... read more

DAY 156 We played cards last night until we could not see the cards anymore, but that was because we sat in the games room and the lights went out at 9.40 plunging us into near darkness, well Andy was beating me anyway so I was not too disappointed. We went to bed early, although not much earlier than usual. It was a slightly warmer night, though it did feel like a cold morning. Today we are packing up, we had 2 nights at this camp site in Ceduna, it wasn’t a bad site it was just the people were a bit strange. We were up with the lark and at it straight away; we both went up to the camp kitchen for our breakfast of Tea and Toast and made our toasted corn dog sandwiches ... read more

DAY 155 Andy was wide awake early this morning, I think because he had gone to bed so early last night. I was comfy and keeping warm, it was hard to get moving this morning. I felt pleased that we had asked if the possibility was there for another night if we needed and I felt as if we needed that, we had not done half of what we wanted to do in preparation for the next part of our trip. It seems that after a few days the journey has a habit of catching up with us or is it just psychological in terms of knowing that we have to catch up on recharging batteries for cameras, doing the washing, topping up with drinking water etc. Andy brought me tea in bed, it is ... read more

Well I woke up at a reasonable time in the weatherboard house in Cook. A train was in and it features in photos that accompany this post. I packed up almost straight away and headed out of town after another quick look around, on to the start of a 100km rough journey. To my dismay, after covering about 50kms, the Jackaroo suddenly changed back in to first gear! Now, if I don't want anything - it's vehicle problems. Firstly you think of several things it could be, then you narrow it down and then you wonder if the cause of the problem is one that you thought it was not. It struggled to change gear - and sometimes it didn't. If I sat or a while, it would change gears properly when I took off again. ... read more

The rain has finally stopped, and the sky is blue, but the temperature is still very cool. We spent last night in Ceduna, at the “Airport Caravan Park”, the last park on your right as you leave Ceduna for Port Augusta Not a 5 stars park, but what we found was “Steve” the most helpful and courteous person one can wish for. Ever since we left home, I had trouble with the sway bars that kept popping out of their sockets, the caravan repair shop at Bunbury was no help at all in guiding me either, and we left, hoping for the best. Needless to say that it was hard keeping the van stable when driving, especially with the weather that we had…. Talking to “Steve” about that problem he said to me “ don’t worry, ... read more

Oct 20 Went out to Greens Pool & Elephant Rocks in the morning. Who should be there but the 3 couples we can’t seem to shake ( or them shake us!!). While a bit further out the ocean was pretty rough, not at all in the Pool. Nice quiet and a lovely green.. Great place for a picnic and a quiet swim. Back to the Toffee Facotry to see them busily making their toffee. Had to buy an ice cream cone, of course. Then off to the wineries!! A bit of a disappointment as 2 of the ones we wanted to visit were closed. HOWEVER Linda picked one for the name and we, luckily, were near it. So we stopped in at Rickety Gate Winery. And had our tastings given by the owner. Asked for and ... read more
