I'd always wanted to visit this small but important historic town in South Australia, but it wasn't until recently that I got the chance. Some friends of mine worked at a nearby mine, and I later visited there, but first I wanted to get a chance to properly explore the lovely town of Cedona .Car HireI was quite pleased as the car hire process at the airport was painless and fast. I simpl... read more

Fowlers Bay to Ceduna Leaving Fowlers was a bit like leaving ‘old friends’ and Trish and I both made the comment that this was not the last time we would come here. Although we now had the Whales, and the purpose of this trip behind us, before we get home to Echuca we still have a lot more to see and do. Heading back to the Eyre Highway we only had 60 odd Klm to go before we reached Penong. Penong is a small community about 80 klm west of Ceduna and scattered around Penong are dozens of windmills that pump water from the Anjutabie Water Basin to all the homes and businesses. This water is supplemented by the use of rain water and water is also carted by truck, when needed, from a reticulated water ... read more

Desert Ship Territory Log Day 16 It was a pretty cold morning in Clare as it would've been about one degree. I really wanted to see the historic town of Mintaro just out of Clare and to see if I could catch a glimpse of Martindale Hall since we are going to miss opening time. All I got to see was some outbuildings through the bush. After stopping briefly back in Clare I couldn't stop photographing all of the old buildings. Clare is also a wine growing area but the minute you leave the valley it quickly reverts to rolling agricultural plains and we were surprised to see how advanced the already flowering canola crops were. We were approaching the Southern Flinders Ranges area again and the landscape got quite hilly again. If you have a ... read more

Desert Ship Territory Log Day 2. We started the day with everyone totally confused as to what the correct time was. We changed some clocks and not others. No phone reception so we can't rely on Telstra for the right time either. Anyway it was light outsiđe so that was a good enough excuse for me to get up and let my sleepy slobs slumber. I took in the ambiance of the truck stop with absolute awe. A line of semi trailers all parked up with some drivers sleeping in their cabs (or otherwise-see previous blog) and others quickly running in and emerging with steaming bacon and egg burgers. The diligent Department of Agriculture officials checking each vehicle and truck some 100m away. When it is our turn to go through we tell her we are ... read more

I last wrote early on Monday 26th just a couple of days ago when we planned to go and check out the Lincoln National Park and were stuck in the van because it was raining so hard. Instead we decided to drive the 45 kms to Port Lincoln and treat ourselves to a lunch of fresh fish and chips. I can see your face from here Barbara. We headed off into the rain and managed to get to PL in time for an early lunch and went hunting for a fish and chip shop. We found one and it was closed. In desperation we went into some stores and asked the staff. They all looked at us blankly and the consensus was the fish and chip shop which was closed or go to a hotel. What ... read more

Monday and Tuesday 6th & 7th May Sunday night we had a steady fall of rain which I am sure pleased the local farmers, and caused us no issues at all. Monday cleared to a good day despite the early heavy cloud. The plan was to cheap camp again at Haslam, a small oyster fishing community north of streaky bay. Our camping book showed two sites, one free and one for $5.00 per night. Fortuitously, Rob Rob gave Tom Tom the co-ordinates for the $5.00 park, not the freebie. This park was almost waterfront with good level sites and a short walk to a public toilet. The alternative was unlevel, small and right beside the highway. Glad I got it wrong! However, before going to Haslam we visited Streaky Bay. Last time we went to Western ... read more

We thought the wind had finished with us for a while, but it returned with a vengenance for our day trip to Ceduna. Its only 110km from Streaky Bay, but two up on Heidi plus the headwind, it seemed much, much longer. The roads again were very long and straight but at least the countryside hadn't been denuded. Once again we noticed the complete lack of toilets at the very few and far between rest areas. Although having said that we have also noticed the lack of roadside rubbish. Saturday lunch time in Ceduna found most of the places closed. We hunted for a cafe and the first one w e tried, had the door locked and wouldn't let us in. The people sitting inside just looked at us with distaste, so we left them in ... read more

Ruth's cousin Mark arrived in town a few days ago from the UK via Sydney and the Territory and will be joining us when we drive from Adelaide to Perth. This crossing has always loomed large on my bucket list so it seemed a great opportunity to hire a motorhome and take Mark with us across the Nullarbor to Perth. I picked up the motorhome after work Friday, I cant believe they charge a credit card fee on there security deposit, which they refuse to refund when the vehicle is returned. I spent much of the evening packing the motorhome, taking the animals to my mums and just getting ready to go. We are planning to leave home at about 6am. At 6am we were on the road stopping for a brief breakfast at Port Wakefield ... read more

The caravan set up with a sea view on the esplanade in Ceduna, we headed next door to the hotel in search of Friday lunch. Local King George whiting with the obligatory chips and salad, washed down with a bottle of New Zealand Sav Blanc set the standard for our few days in Ceduna. The views across the bay were very beautiful and gave rise to stunning sunsets. Cameras clicked aplenty as all and sundry tried to capture them. Grain trucks filling the silos, stark white salt piles and clattering gypsum trains all located near the wharf were evidence of local production. A ship being filled with gypsum meant regular long heavy trains passing through town by night and day. Obviously Friday is the night for action at the pub next door. Seems everyone was being ... read more

19th September 2012 We left our Coffin Bay campsite just before 9am and headed north. The countryside was green and gold and rolling hills initially, very scenic. We had morning tea at Elliston, a pretty coastal spot. We stopped at Murphy's Haystacks, some unusual looking rock formations in a field, for lunch. Alex was bitten on the head by a bee while looking at a beehive. After lunch we noticed the country looked drier as we continued north. There were bobtail lizards all over the roads, we were constantly driving around them. Perhaps because it was quite a warm and sunny day, the warmest we've had in ages. We arrived in Ceduna at around 3:30pm and we are staying in the Big 4 caravan park. Mike tried squid fishing from the jetty after dinner but had ... read more
