After a horrific 13 hour nightbus, where I was forced to watch Dr Dolittle 3, we finally arrived in Airlie Beach. We got our free shuttle bus to our hostel (Koala's) and at 9am all we wanted to do was go to bed. However with a late check in time we headed out for some breakfast and a nose around. Airlie beach is a small place with most backpackers using it as a stop over before and/or after a trip around the Whitsundays Islands. In between the beach itself and the main high street there is a gorgeous man-made lagoon, where you can go for a dip anytime. The morning that our boat departed we had a very brief briefing, we headed off to the harbour. With our stinger suits, scuba gear and goon in ... read more

I'd just like to draw everyone's attention to the title of todays diary, which is very funny. At 6am we were awoken, not feeling super, however they'd made bacon sandwiches for breakfast, so once we'd got on the boat, I was feeling OK, as was a guy called Gilles who was Canadian, so we were up the front of the boat with our legs over the front, having I think the best time I've had since I've been out here. The waves were brilliant. Half the boat were being sick over the side, but up front it was like being on an amazing water rollercoaster thing, the waves were massive, and we were getting thrown all over the place and soaked through. Honestly I was like an excited 5 year old. We got to Whitehaven beach ... read more

We arrived in Airlie Beach after an overnight bus journey from Hervey Bay. Got about 2 hours sleep, it was so uncomfortable, and just as I fell asleep the driver would decide to make a stop, turning all the lights on and announcing on his microphone that we were stopping, therefore waking everyone up even though it was 2am. He would also play strange films at loud volume, so I don't see how anyone is meant to sleep. So, tired in Airlie Beach we checked into our hostel, Magnums, not the greatest place I've stayed by far. The kitchen didn't even have hobs, and there were no table and chairs to sit and eat. Anyway, we were so tired so we got an early night in our 10 people dorm. Unfortunatley we had 10 Irish people ... read more

Hey Well Whitsundays were great (although i think they sold it as more than it was!! but im really not complaining!!) Sailed to south Molle island on the first day - which was luxury - are you sure this was fioor us ?? were backpackers??? So after a LOT of food and some beers the sun and sailing retired some people to bed - ready for day two............. Which was sailing to Whitehaven beach..... 7km of pure silicon sand and one of the top 10 beaches in the world!! oh no!! And snorkelling along the reefs off the land there - which meant sexy sexy stinger suits (all in one lycra jobbies!) but i guess if they can save your life maybe they are worth it!! Then lunch and games on the beach before heading back ... read more

We sailed to Whitehaven beach today to do a bit of sunbathing, clean our jewellery and snorkel. Cecelia and I saw sea snakes, sting rays, a turtle .... so it was worth our time, plus of course the fabulous coral! Whitehaven beach really is fantastic - only spoilt by the fact that you need a stinger suit to guard against dying! Mind you Dan and Mike seemed to survive diving in constantly without one....and even diving when the boat is moving for a bet! ... read more

We boarded the Pride of Airlie today and sailed out to South Molle island where we got our rooms, we ended up with No Drama, who turns out to be really Tommy and actually does have more words in his vocabulary, Laura, Ingo and Daniel. We decided to skip the idea of tennis or golf and just head straight to the bar for jugs of snakebite.....which turned out to be the staple of the night. Played some drinking games, which were quite amusing esp when the skipper "performed" oral on Irene for one of the tasks.... read more
