The moment Keith drove us down the drive I honestly couldn't believe my eyes. When you hear about a place all your life and see various pictures from different corners of the house and garden, you create your own personal expectations. This moment obliterated mine. The vast slender trees that make up their 'garden' (I use the term loosely, for it is so different to anything in England) and the huge creek running at the bottom of the hill just blew my mind. This is the real Australian bush, the rainforests and the mountains. Dee was there to meet me at the door and I could see her trying to figure out if I was honestly the same little child that features in some of the pictures around her house. The weather has turned bad again, not too cold because we're still on the coast but raining everyday and overcast most of the time. Did a walk around Cape Byron and saw a huge pod of dolphins!! They were jumping around in the waves and it was amazing!! Watched them for ages even though the weather was average. Apart from that just chilled in Byron and enjoyed not driving! Headed inland from Byron on some country roads that wound their way through the mountains, the countryside looked very English all of a sudden! Went through some tiny villages, Australia's population is so spread out that villages that wouldn't even make it onto a map in the UK are considered large villages here. Tuesday morning we left the hostel in Surfers Paradise and spent some time on the beach (beach pics were accidentally put in our last Blog entry). Once we had our fun in the sun, we took the hostel’s courtesy bus into the city where we met up with Graham and Lorna again, who drove us out to their house in Mudgeeraba! It’s a small town inland from Surfers Paradise, but it was connected by transit to both Surfers and Brisbane, which made it a great home base! Once in town, Lorna took us for a little tour around the area, and showed us everything we needed to know to find: bank, grocery store and the movie rental store.
