It took us 452km with our little rental car to reach Townsville, the capital city of the North of Queensland. Townsville isn't really touristic but the thing to visit here is the island on the opposite of Townsville, Magnetic Island. Magnetic Island received its name from Captain Cook due that his compass was acting very strange when his boat was passing the island. It never happened again… he probably had too many beers… The island is really relaxed and has several amazing deserted beaches that are only accessible through very small footpaths. We did Balding Bay but the best is apparently Florence Bay. The walk is a bit hard with the sun and all but with a deserved surprise at the end! Many people you encounter feel a bit frustrated of not seeing enough wild animals. ... read more

Anscheinend ... read more

We caught the Sun Ferry from Townsville to Magnetic Island arriving at Nelly Bay which is a new boat harbour. There are new apartments everywhere - all very expensive and not selling. We rented a Moke from Topless Rentals and tootled off to walk the track to the Forts - WW2 gun emplacements. We found a koala in the trees beside the track. The walk took for ever and we were glad to get back to the Moke and go down to Horseshoe Bay for lunch. The day was overcast and breezy but ideal for walking. After lunch we drove to the other end of the island to Picnic Bay which was like a ghost town. The old wharf was in disrepair and since the ferries now use the new facility this part of the island ... read more

We loved Magnetic island. Peaceful, laidback and slightly off the backpacker run from Sydney to Cairns. From Townsville it's an easy 30 minute crossing on the Sun Ferries catamaran and then, if you stay in the Arcadia Beach Guest House, there's a good chance that Pete will pick you up in the Roller! This turned us into Flashpackers apparently. We got a little tour round in it as well and ooh didn't people stare. Louise gave them a little wave. We spent three nights on the island. Alma bay, a short stroll, is picturesque and tranquil and great for a swim or a snorkel. There are a couple of great walks on the island, 'The Forts Walk' takes you up to the old WW2 installation (a hundred or so Aussie men and women were stationed here ... read more

We were met at the ferry by Andrew as he was also picking up his youngest brother Pete and his family who had arrived on the passenger ferry at the same time. We thought we'd first check in to our cottage in Arcadia near Alma Bay, but Andrew wouldn't have a bar of it and persuaded us to come and greet everyone at their holiday house (Te-Nikau). Even though the 40th birthday party for Anna wasn't until the following Sunday, there was already a large group of family and friends at their house. Like us, they were also making full use of the invitation to spend a week or so on the island. People kept arriving during the course of the week, so the number gradually climbed. Despite this, lunch, dinner and even the occasional breakfast ... read more

After one more night in Airlie Beach after the sailing, we moved onto Townsville. We were hoping to go straight to Magnetic Island from Townsville, but we had to stay one night in Townsville as there was a Full Moon party on the Island and the hostel was fully booked. We found a fantastic hostel in Townsville to stay in for one night. It had just recently opened and was gorgeous! It had wooden floors, that were so shiney it was like you were in a museum! It had big verandas all around the upstairs with rocking chairs and wind chimes. It reminded me of an American house in the South. Townsville was a bit of a dive, but the hostel was quite far out of the town anyway. They gave us a lift to the ... read more

Magnetic Island Wednesday June 30th I had a particularly lazy day Tuesday watching football and movies: I watched and thoroughly enjoyed ‘The Lovely Bones’ despite the overwhelming weight of critical disdain cast on the movie from all and sundry. Some people think it’s just a morbid pile of trash, sordid and miserable, pretentious and ugly. I don’t care! I found the whole thing to be very thought-provoking. I particularly enjoyed the Brian Eno soundtrack. In fact, I ended up doing something I rarely do: watching the whole movie twice - this was a slight accident - I missed the beginning first time then watched it over to see that part and didn’t stop! Antony and I went out for a drink later at a couple of the bars after walking all around town. I wasn’t feeling ... read more

Night of the Weirdos. Antony got home from work. We walked back across town to meet up with a couple of his mates from work down on the seafront. By the time we got there, one of his friends was already chatting with a woman at the bar. I assumed this was his rather attractive girlfriend. Wrong! It turned out to be a deeply psychotic weirdo, someone he had started talking to at the bar while waiting for us to arrive. Her name was ‘Nelly’ and everything she said, probably including the name, was a ridiculous lie! She was a truly weird and bizarre creature. She was always an expert in every subject that came up and was working in that area, too. One minute she’s an expert on food, then a counselor, then a business ... read more

Hello to anyone still reading along! Our latest update is from Magnetic Island, just off the coast of Townsville. We bussed up from Airlie Beach, thankfully a short ride, and caught the ferry across to the island (called Maggie by locals). As soon as we sat down on the ferry the skies open and rain poured down like it was the end of the world... we were happy to be undercover! As our 20 minute voyage continued, it was rather choppy and we narrowly missed being soaked by ocean water, but we arrived successfully to sun! We took the city bus to our hostel, Base, and checked in after a long wait at reception (apparently the locals are all on Island Time). The hostel was quite impressive. It had mixed reviews online, mostly due to the ... read more
